President Kennedy once explained the type of person you are: “The courage of life is often a less dramatic spectacle than the courage of a final moment, but it is no less than a magnificent mixture of triumph and tragedy. A man does what he must—in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures—and that is the basis of all human morality For this example over the years, we count our friendship and lessons from you as examples never to be forgotten. The class sponsors were Mr. Herbert Feasel, art instructor, and Catherine Weidler, English and German instructor. On April 2nd the class sponsored a senior class party, which carried out a “Sadie Hawkins theme.” The seniors were entertained by the juniors with the very de¬ lightful Junior-Senior Prom, which was held Friday, May 21. Baccalaureate was held in the high school auditorium at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 23. The Rev. Sylvester Martin was the guest speaker and the Rev. W. R. Watson gave the invocation. Mr. Lorin A. Burt, Associate Professor of Education at In¬ diana University spoke at Commencement Thursday, May 27. After graduation, the class participated in the all-night party, sponsored annually by the Lion’s Club. The class had its final meeting on May 28th. First it is with great pride that we point to our class elections. Friendly, yet spirited races helped to create an interesting “campaign” and subsequent choices of class officers. Secondly, our junior class officers served with pride and distinction on the council, and we were honored to have our class secretary serve as the council’s first secretary under the new constitution which was drawn up and ratified just this year. Of course, many thanks must be extended to our spon¬ sors, Mrs. Houk and Mr. Journay, who were so helpful during the year. The class officers get much credit for the efficiency with which the class operated, but, it was the sponsors who helped to keep the class members working as an enthusiastic unit. It was March 2, 1965, when she was sixteen and in her sophomore year, that she died. She had been an active member of the Methodist Church and Youth Fellow¬ ship, Girl Scouts, Rainbow Girls, and our school Pep Club. Her one brother and three sisters all attended Decatur High School. Her sister, Carol is a member of the junior class. It’s hard for those of us who knew her to use the term, “Peggy was”; it’s hard to realize that someone who was so active and so much a part of our school life, is now gone. But let us make this memoriam a glad one, glad that we knew Peggy and were able to be a part of her life. Sorry only that we were not able to know her longer and that others will not be able to know her. Because of her outstanding character and good will, her sincerity and loyalty, we dedicate this page to her memory. May we be enriched by the example she has set. a 2 7hua off School Row 1 Marcia Alexander David Anderson Sally Andrews Lance Andrews Teresa Archer James Augsburger Karen Barkley Donald Bassett Robert Baughman David Baughn Row 2 Diane Bays Arlene Beavers Michael Beery Diana Bienz Gregory Bixler Tom Blythe William Bor ror Susan Bowman Lisa Brandyberry Linda Brokaw Row 3 Connie Brown William Brown Kay Burke Darlene Burkhart Brenda Cable Rebecca Canales Row 4 Linda Carey Bob Chidister James Christen Cheri Colter Andrea Cook Row 5 Ed Cravens Lois Crozier Pamela Davidson Kenneth Davis Ronald Davis Row 6 Richard DeBolt Stephen Doty Thomas Drake David Equia Frank Equia Daniel Evans Row 7 Thomas Evanson Karen Fisher Sally Fletcher Barbara Frauhiger Carol Frisinger Stephen Fuhrman Eric Gehrig Penny Geimer Jacqueline Geisler James Gilbert Row 8 Janet Ginter John Ginter George Gordon Brenda Grant Pamela Grote Douglas Halberstadt Dan Harden Terry Harner Lon Hawkins Laura Hawley jLojft UtiJjjz Sopkomw oJmU Row 1 Alanna Hay Elena Hazelwood Jacqueline Helm Dorwin Hendricks Philip Hess Terry Hilyard Ed Hirschy Mary Hooper Thomas Hower Richard Hullinger Row 2 Rick Humbles Thomas Hunter Robert Huss June Hutchison Charles Johnson Mack Johnson Linda Jones Michele Jones Daniel Kane Imogene Kasee Row 3 James Kenney Linda Kenworthy Kathy Kiess Cheryl Knudsen Larry Krick Linda Krick Row 4 William Landrum Richard Larribee Hans Lehr Ronald Lehrman Ervin Lengerich Row 5 Connie Lenhart Nancy Lesiuk Nancee Linn Domingo Lopez Roger Lough Row 6 Thomas Lough Karen McBride Linda McIntosh Sharon McRae Stephen Magsamen Brenda Marbach Row 7 Kathleen Mathis Peter Mayclin Julia Meeks Delores Mendez Joe Meyer Becky Miller Libby Minch Diana Mitch Larry Mix Dennis Morgan Row 8 Wayne Morgan Gene Murray Terry Myers Karen Noll Becky Ogg Michael Patch Larry Raudenbush Jean Ray Michael Reidenbach Cassie Reynolds Sophomore, which means literally “wise fool,” is the name given to the second class in high school. The sophomore class of 1964-’65 has illustriously strived to accomplish the goal of learning “wisely.” The ex¬ periences during the year were beneficial and re¬ warding. The sophomores elected the following officers: Dave Spiegel, president; Dave Baughn, vice-president; Sally Fletcher, secretary; Cheri Colter, treasurer. Wednesday, October 22, after the Concordia game, the sophomores had their first dance held in the school cafeteria. In February, the death of Peggy Smith, a very popu¬ lar member of the sophomore class, brought sorrow to the entire school and especially to members of the sophomore class. On March 19, the sophomores sponsored a dance at the Community Center entitled, “Gnirps Poh,” with the “Nomads” giving special interest to all who attended. Since we were contributing one-half of the profits to the Cancer Society in memory of Peggy Smith it seemed everyone wanted to help. As a result the at¬ tendance was the largest ever at any dance at the Center. Left to Right: Sally Fletcher, secretary; Dave Spiegel, president; Cheri Colter, treasurer; Dave Baughn, vice-president. As the first task of the class we elected the following: president, Jerry Brown; vice-president, Ron Lesuik; secre¬ tary, Vicki Lehman; treasurer, Susan Singleton. These four freshmen also served on the Student Council. The class sponsors appointed were Mrs. Clark and Mr. Scheidler. Many members of the freshman class have been listed on the honor roll; we are very proud of them. Several members of our class have begun to make names for themselves in the field of sports. Two freshmen made varsity wrestling and three made varsity track. The Fresh¬ man Basketball team was not as successful this year as other years have been, but its record is six wins and 8 losses. The Freshman Football team won one game and lost three. The Freshman class sponsored two very successful dances. The crashing of shoulder pads and the thud of the pig¬ skin woke up the sleepy wooded area of Belmont woods, as head coach Wally Yeoman ran his new team through many tough workouts in preparation for the 1964 season. Beginning with an explosive start in the Jamhoree, the Yellow Jackets met with only one defeat throughout their nine game campaign. The Jackets opened their season with a win over a tough Auburn eleven 7-6; and picked up another win over arch¬ rival Garrett 13-0; before dropping their third and only loss to rugged New Haven 0-25. After the encounter with New Haven, the Yellow Jackets rolled over their next two opponents—Portland 32-6 and Bluffton 34-6 accumulating 66 points in the process, before squeaking past a big Elmhurst eleven 20-13. Then Kendallville 27-0. Concordia was Decatur’s next victim, falling to the over¬ powering Yellow Jackets 40-13. Decatur posted its final victory over an inspired group of Angola Hornets, by means of that unforgettable pass interception by Tom Whitaker, with no time left on the clock and a tie ball game became 21-14. Yes, it was trul y a season Decatur football fans will not forget for a long time. It also brought many individual honors to various members of the squad. 59 Bob Hawkins Tim Magley rners Max Elliott Terry Smitlev John Eichenauer Jack Stauffer ary Hammond |P[C ■ h fiX0 WfW i 1: 1 Dave Smith Pete Ortiz ft 1 1 « ! K Dave Snell . $ A «V It was only a matter of a few days after the gridiron season had come to a close, that Decatur’s new head basketball coach, Phil Miller, had the boys exchanging their spikes for sneakers and their helmets for a pair of basketball trunks. Entering their new season with a great deal of hustle, hard work, and great anticipation, the Yellow Jackets found the going exceptionally tough. It took the Decatur quintet ten games to break the ice and come up with two victories over Kendallville and Angola before hitting another dry spell of seven games, losing many by only a few breaks. The Jackets topped Dunkirk for their last regular season win. Although they did not have an outstanding record before the Sectional, they advanced to the finals in the Adams County Sectional Tournament, only to be nosed out by the Adams Central Flying Jets by the narrow margin of three points. True, it was not a record breaking season as far as wins were concerned, but the members of this year’s squad, gave each game all they had despite the agitation of numerous losses and the temptation of letting up when the going gets tough. ukdboU VARSITY Kneeling: Alan Sprunger, Dave Anspaugh, Max Elliott, Jerry Egly, Bill Blythe. The first order of business for the year was the election of the following officers: president, Timothy Singleton; vice-presi¬ dent, Leon Habegger; secretary, Jean Swickard; treasurer, Jane Tumlin. The first program of the year was presented at the annual Open House in November. Other programs throughout the year included the Christmas Program, the Berne-Bluffton-Decatur Festival, and the Musical play—“Mr. Crane.” One of the outstanding activities of the year was our appearance on WANE Television. This was part of the sta¬ tion’s special Christmas music. The final concert choir ap¬ pearances were for Baccalaureate and Commencement Services. A new vocal ensemble was formed this year, the Boys’ Double Trio. They, along with the Girls’ Double Trio, added a bit of color in and around the school with their cranberry out¬ fits. Both ensembles were asked to perform for many functions, both as a large mixed ensemble and as separate ensembles. The Double Trios celebrated their successful year by having a smorgasbord at The Four Seasons Restaurant in May. duktd %m Front Row: Carol Hoverman, Judy Courtney, Jean Swickard, Jane Jacobs, Alyce DeBolt, Carole Mitch, Bob DeVoss, Sim Hain, Bill Roberts, Tim Singleton, Tom Engle, Barbara Conrad, Karla Meyer, Linda Kiess, Charlotte Ludwig, Pam Koos, Sharon Zwick. BBBt j Under the direction of Mr. Richard M. Collins, the De¬ catur High School Band had an outstanding, active year. During the fall, the band performed before and at the half of every home football game. The precision marching was the result of the many early-morning practices. In the fall, the band made its annual trip to the Bluffton Street Fair, where they were warmly greeted. With the marching season out of the way, the band con¬ centrated on concert music. The band’s performance at the Open House was very commendable. During the Spring Music Festival the band played at their usual best along with the bands from Berne and Bluffton. The festival was held at Berne this year. In February, the seniors were given their band sweaters, along with letters and chevrons. The band presented two Sunday afternoon concerts. In these, the junior band and dance band played, as well as the high school band. At the last concert, which was held May 16, the senior members of the band received awards for their participation in the band. 98 3 ft (Jolme, mum Front Row: Kathy Mathis, Julie Meeks, Carolyn Rash, Joetta Ha- begger, Janelle Heller, Gwendolyn Nash, Max Halberstadt, Lisa Brandyberry, Ed Cravens, Susie Langston, Candy Railing, Karen Noll, Julie Zerkel, Milly Harrell. The Color Wheel has done many things in assisting on the various activities of the school. The members made settings and backgrounds for the Christmas program and the play, “Mr. Crane.” This year we adopted the point system, whereby every mem¬ ber is eligible to earn an Art pin. One must earn fifty points and maintain a “B” average for the entire school year. This pin is the goal of every member. The pride of this year’s Student Council was the introduc¬ tion of a school constitution. With the Constitution, certain rules were set down in black-and-white for the first time. Coinciding with the Constitution, the Council re-organized the cheerleader elections: the candidates must petition with 15 signatures before they are eligible to try-out. Another project that was initiated by the 1964-65 Council was the conduction of a canned-food drive in co-operation with the Goodfellow’s Club to help support a family at Christmas. Over 250 cans were collected. To acquaint oncoming freshmen with the high school, the Council organized a tour for the eighth graders. The Student Council sponsored various additional projects: It compiled a scrapbook by collecting pictures and news items of its activities; it decorated the second floor display case every week bringing various departments of our school to the attention of the students; it continued with “Dress-Up Day”—one in March and one in April—and it conducted ex¬ change meetings with other councils. Not overlooking its particular obligations, it carried on “hall check”; and it chose assemblies for the 1965-66 school year. With a new sponsor, Mr. William Hitchcock, and led by the elected officers—Boh DeVoss, president; Jim Brown, vice-president; and Jayne Macklin, secretary—the members feel they have completed a successful year. tornmdai Front: Sharon Johnson, Nina Jones, Carol Painter, Lois Kel ler, Sandra Cookson, Beverly Spiegel, Charlsie Clark. The club is composed of the beginning and advanced typing, and shorthand classes, under the di¬ rection of Mr. Maynard Hetrick. The following officers were elected by the members: president, Patricia Nid- linger; vice-president, JoAnn Kallenberger; secretary, Linda Fulton; treasurer, Beth Ann Snyder. The Commercial Club is an organization that represents students with a desire for higher attainment in commercial subjects. Students attaining speeds of 40, 50, 60, and 70 words per minute are awarded pins by the club. We the officers of the 1964-65 Commercial Club wish to extend our best wishes to the officers next year. JEFF ZIMMERMAN 143 As Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, “The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.” As we reach the end of the work on this book, we do so with a sense of satisfaction, knowing that many, many, hours of labor has brought this task to its completion. We think it is a job well done, and we hope you will think so too, and thus have greater appreciation for the hook that is before you. Mr. Smith and I hope that next year’s staff will have as much enjoyment and experience, and, as great a challenge in putting out the 1966 Ravelings. Best of luck and pleasant yearbooking.
