In our freshman year we started like a bicycle rider, wavering under the glance of those mighty seniors. High school surely was different from junior high school. Man, these high school teachers like to give assignments! By the time we became sophomores, we had our feet on the ground floor land some of us on the basement floor in Mr. Dailey's 8th period classy. That year we didn't want to get back to school, but the first few weeks were like a few cranks to start our Model T on the academic road. A few of our number were lucky to serve at the J unior-Senior Prom. Miss Weidler served as our conductor on that streamlined junior year. This year our class athletes began to show on the varsity teams. It was quite an experience to cross over to Canada, while on our trip to Detroit. Our junior train had many stops, but we really t'rodded the rails between stops. Over the Rainbow was the name of the Junior-Senior Prom, which everyone enjoyed. Well, this is it-our senior year. First off, we elected officers and a spon- sor. They are President, Ralph Thomas3 Vice-President, Shirley Wass3 Sec- retary, Jackie J amesg Treasurer, Wayne Florag and Sponsor, Miss Vera. As we were about to climb aboard the jet plane that whizzed us through our last two se.mesters, some of us were glad and some sad, but it was over much, much too soon. Our passage at the speed of sound nearly blotted out the music of the two dances we sponsored after ball games. We didn't travel too fast however to take time out to take part in the Spring Revue, Flying High. On May ll the juniors entertained us at a wonderful prom, Deep Purple, and what fun we had at our senior party, with its western theme and real Cowboys and Indi'ans3 or almost real. Baccalaureate serv- ices on May 20 brought us down to a realization that it was about over. Our Commencement speaker delivered an impressive address to us at Com- mencement, After the dance we enjoyed several parties. At last we have broken through the sound barrier and now we face the life that D.H.S. has prepared us for. We shall never forget D.H.S. and we shall always con- sider ourselves fortunate to be graduates of D.H.S. sa, 5 , . fn HH 15 no-ru Y 1 U? They really put on the brakes to choose their class officers and came up with: President: Fred Locke Vice President: John Hebble Secretary: Carolyn Drake Treasurer: Jane Wass Sponsor: Mr. Cobb They also had David Eichenauer, Gordon Black and Fred Locke as representatives on .the Student Council. With Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Everhart to give the push which our Ford needed at that time, We journeyed to Chi- cago for a very interesting class trip. Our Model T. stopped at the Youth Center during the football season to sponsor a dance, '1Autumn Leavesf' and during the basketball season to sponsor the Leap Year Leap. We really picked up gas money from these events. Our Model T. this year was honored by its outstanding passengers. Many of the boys made football and basketball history this year. Three of our girls were the second team basketball cheerleaders. Others participated in various school organizations and clubs. As the Sophomores are quite a brainy group, Qyou'll see their names on the honor rollj our engine always ran smoothly. Our Ford came to a halt this year when eight girls and boys Were chosen to serve at the Junior Pro.m. We'll be back again next year though, and really make Decatur proud of our Model T. 25 Freshmen Row 1: Rex Allison, Sharon Alverson, Larry Andrews, Cheryl Ashbaucher, Janice Badenhop, Jerry Baumann, Ned Baumgartner, Connie Baxter, Jane Bedwell, Mike Berry, Barbara Bleeke, Jim Bleeke, Leonard Bleeke, Marlene Bleeke. At Christmas, beautiful window decora- tions of white on a blue background in keep- ing with the season were featured in Mr. Dor- win's room and in the Study Hall. Members of the Color Wheel made the props for the Christmas pageant, Clever bells graced the offices of the superintendent, and of the prin- cipal. Charming angels, an excellent drawing of the Three Wise Men done by Judith Franz, and a modern Christmas tree greeted those who came to see the Christmas pageant. All these decorations were made by the Art Club. Another project was making scenery and props for the revue, Flying High, which climaxed a very busy and enjoyable year for the Color Wheel. 37 :L cd CQ af 44 4-7 cv 'U 5-4 5 lil C1 o VJ 55 .5 o '1 an C: CI cu cu Q M.. The first is the giving of awards for typing efficiency to those students who has earned them. For the 35-word award, you obtain a certificate. For a 40-56-60-70- word award, you win a certificate and a pin. This year, 1955-56, there have been twenty- seven people winning 35-word awards, twen- ty-three people winning 40-word awards, five people winning 50-word awards, and one per- son winning a 60-word award. The second function is the printing of the Gabfest. Everyone in the advanced typing class worked hard and steady to produce the Gabfest. We certainly hope that those who read it, enjoyed it, because we enjoyed doing it. Row 1: Lorna Smith, Jeannine Schultz, Judy Keller. I , Cross Country and Track Kneeling: John Sheets, Phil McDonald, Chalmer Reinking. Standing: Dave Eichenauer, Harold Sommer, Ralph Thomas. The Yellow Jacket thinly clads, in spite of poor wea- ther, have compiled a good record this season. The Jackets have defeated Pleasant Mills, Geneva Qtwicej, Lancaster, Monmouth, and Adams Central, while they lost to Central, Central Catholic, and Concordia of Fort Wayne, New Haven, Bluffton, Columbia City, Huntington, and Portland. In the N.E.I.C. conference track meet, Bill Roth took second in the pole vault, Terry Murphy tied for second and third in the high jump and placed third in the broad jump, Wayne Flora took fifth place in the mile run as did Harold Sommer in the half-mile run. Decatur's mile relay team placed fifth. With the sectional ahead of them, the Jackets hope to close out the season with a good showing. The cross-country team in its initial year had a moderately successful season winning one and losing two. The Jackets defeated Monmouth in their first meet while losing to Adams Central and Concordia of Fort Wayne. ln the sectional meet Decatur placed eighth among six- teen schools. Harold Sommer was elected honorary captain by the lettermen who are: Ralph Thomas, Harold Sommer, seniors, Chalmer Reinking, junior, John Sheets, Garry Sheets, and Phil Mc- Donald, sophomores. In spite of the fact that only three lettermen re- turned, the teams won two of their first four matches. The sched- ule consisted of twelve matches, including the Conference meet at Garrett and the Sectional at Ft. Wayne. Besides the returning lettermen, Bill Zwick Qsrj, Paul Schmidt and Ron Hesher Cjrsj, the team included Richard Lemming fsophj and five freshmen- Michael Beery, Jim Burke, Steve Edwards, Nick Conrad, and Jerry Scheiman. With this group of underclassmen, Coach Dailey is looking forward to a championship team in the near future. Kneeling: Richard Leming, Nick Conrad, Mike Beery, Jerry Scheiman. Row 2: Judy Locke, Jeannine Schultz, Leah Bran- dyberry, Helen Roth. Row 3: Jackie James, Bev Poling, Janey Smith, Luanne Lehman. Girls' Athletics After starting off on a Slow Boat to Chinal' and sailing past the juniors, the Mighty Class of 56 hooked a ride on a jet', and Whizzed past the sophomores to be- come the basketball champs. Yes, this year the girls reverted to the usual basketball tourney and the seniors, behind a certain red-head hot-shot, became the undisputed champs. Ah well, enough of past glory! All attention is now centered on the varsity volley-ball teams Who, under the able guidance of Mrs. Worthman, made a good showing against the county schools. Besides these teams, many girls of all the classes have become part of an intra-mural group of teams and are hav- ing a lot of fun playing against one another. Like the caboose, last but not least, other activities such as kickball, deck tennis, soft ball and calisthenics Cto keep us in shape?J must be mentioned. Girls' Athletic Director Rebecca Worthman Scorekeeper: Jack Dailey. Kneeling: Max Eichenauer, Tom Grabill, Jerry McIntosh, Jerry Knavel, Ron Highland, John Cow- ans, Al Townsend. Standing: Steve Kinerk, David Clark, Jim Reidenback, Larry Baumgartner, Jim Gay, Joe Smith, Stewart Knodle, Eddie Nelson, Jay DeVoss. Junkw likgh baH Coach William Doehrman This year the Junior High team did very well, winning 14 of 23 games and both the Junior High Tournament and the City Series Trophy. The team members were: Joe Smith, Jim Gay, Jay DeVoss, Jim Reidenbach, Lar- ry Baumgartner, Steve Kinerk, David Clark, Steve Butcher, Johnny Cowans, Al Town- send, Jerry Knavel, Tom Grabill, Max Ei- chenhauer, Ed Nelson, and Steve Knodel. The student managers were Jerry Mclntosh, Ron Highland, and Jack Dailey. Mr. Doehrman served as coach and did a very fine job.
