Each day is an fivitation to a fresh start and a promise )f untouched oppor- tunity. Each one suj ests an exciting ad- venture in living. As you leave us ... Thank you for helping us grow ... in awareness ... in wisdom ... in understanding Thank you for helping us develop ... a concern for others ... an appreciation of beauty ... a love for knowledge Thank you for helping us discover the true meaning of the art of living. 4 Lorraine Maguire, English, journalism and oral interp To the hundreds of young people whom I have been privileged to teach, to know and to love, I would like to share some of my favorite quotations ... There’s a place in the sun for everyone If you’re not afraid to trust. To grow ... you should know all about it. Lands to return all the things that you earn. There's love in the hearts of everyone If you’re wise and you’re fair and you’re just! For you — if you're true, never doubt it. — Fred Waring Hands that will aid in the plans that you’ve made. A man’s worth depends on what he contributes, not on what he obtains; it depends on what he does with his life, on how much he adds to the peace, happiness and beauty of the world. — Grenville Kieiser Live in the active rather than the passive voice, intent upon what you can do rather than upon what may happen to you. Live in the indicative mood, not the subjunctive, concerned with facts as they are rather than as they might be. Live in the present tense, concentrating upon the duty at hand, without regrets for the past or worry about the future. Live in the first person, criticizing yourself rather than condemning others. Live in the singular number, caring more for the ap- proval of your own conscience than for popularity with the many. — William DeWitt Hyde Join the great company of those who make the barren places of life fruitful with kindness ... Your success and happiness lie in you ... The great enduring realities are love and service ... Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties. — Helen Keller This time, like all other times, is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it. — Ralph Waldo Emerson Look to this Day Look to this day. For yesterday is but a dream For it is life, And tomorrow is only a vision. The very life of life. But today, well lived, In its brief course lies all Makes every yesterday a dream of happiness The realities and verities of existence, And every tomorrow a vision of hope. The bliss of growth. The splendor of action. Look well, therefore, to this day. The glory of power — — Sanskrit Proverb Thank you, editorial board, Kathy McAdaragh, Lisa Sorenson, Lynette Vallery and Wendy VanMeter and a special thanks to Lana Dannenbring, editor, for all the hours spent on the 1983-84 yeaer yearbook. Thank all of you for sharing your lives with me. The gift of friendship Is the nicest gift Of all. It comes wrapped in Warmth and understanding And tied with love ... Mr. Janish taught us all about computers in the computer room. Mrs. Pirlet helped us write “The Sixth Grade Senior,” our Laura Ingalls Wilder School monthly newspaper. Jason Groce, Darcy Keller and Terry Mangelsen went to the district spelling contest. Melissa Junker won a computer for designing a Mother’s Day card for Kentucky Fried Chicken. 33 Fifth Grade News The fifth grade class started the year with 23 students. Jeff Tidwell left us to go to Ohio, but we gained Tammy De Wall of Watertown, S.D. Our social studies class invited Seuchiro “Chuck Takagi, an in residence Fulbright Scholar at Dakota State College. He showed us slides of Japan, played a Japanese game with us, and taught us a few Japanese words. The students found him very interesting. Mrs. Blegen spoke to the social studies class about her recent trip to Mexico, showing articles made in Mexico. She showed us a Mexican som- brero and Mexican money. The students were very interested in their market places and lan- guages spoken in Mexico. The physical and political aspects of the 50 states were studied in social studies. The study of the westward movement and expanding our country were concluded with a visit to Prairie Village in Madison, S.D. Three parties were enjoyed this year — Hal- loween, Christmas and Valentine’s. The computer was the center of interest in our room this year. Students became acquainted with and learned to run the computer. Programs deal- ing with Math, were developed by Mary Ann Penney, and we then expanded our interests to social studies and language. The students showed a great deal of interest and knowledge about the computer. We had a fun time carolling at Christmas time and also had a Christmas and spring concert. Students are anxious for summer vacation after a long winter.” Fourth Grade News A ‘Special Person’ has been chosen to be fea- tured on one section of the bulletin board for each week of this school year, culminating with the entire bulletin board filled with profiles and ‘Wheels of Fortune’ for twenty-four good citizens who have been enrolled in fourth grade for 1983- 1984. Ev- eryone has become a good reader; we learned new math facts and ideas including multiplication and division; we also learned cursive writing. During National Fire Prevention Week we walked to the fire station. We saw fire trucks and equipment. The firemen had a treat for us. We have been penpals with students in Walnut Grove, Minn. It's been fun to write and receive letters. Washington, D.C. was a unit we studied. We had many pictures, slides, film strips, postcards, etc. to look at. We also read a story about our nation's capitol and wrote stories about it. We gained three new students: Melinda Whitney, Jeff Nolle and Kim DeWall, which brought our final enrollment to 28. Mike Burgers and Carrie Mandernach were chosen by the student council to be the crown bearers in the home- coming coronation. Each week we had a “Student of the Week”, which meant one child would be featured during the week by bringing mementos, pictures and whatever they liked con- cerning themselves. On a selected day during the child’s week, one or both oarents joined the class for a snack and storytime. Each child also had a “Mystery Box”, for which clues were given each day and at the end of the week, the secret object was revealed. In November we enjoyed a “Thanksgiving Sharing Feast”. The children each furnished and prepared a part of the meal. This was used to help teach the true meaning of Thanksgiving. The first graders presented two plays during the year. The first one was given on Halloween Day to the residents at the Good Samaritan Center. The second play was pre- sented for the mothers at a Mother’s Day Celebration. The children received books through the RIF program twice this year. In connection with this, volunteers from the community came in to listen to the children read. Each child had the opportunity to read to a volunteer for ten minutes one day a week. The children really enjoyed this. In the spring we enjoyed the tulips blooming outside our classroom windows. This was a result of our fall bulb planting. A special thank-you to our room mothers for the year, who were Judy Burgers and Alberta Whitaker. Leckey A very tough schedule and lack of a consistent offense caused the Bulldogs to have their first losing season in six years, after winning the State 11-A crown in 1981 and making the final 8 in 1982. After a bcleaguring start, losing three of their first four games, the Dogs re-orga- nized their thoughts and goals and went on to win three of the last five games against tough competition, competition. A homecoming victory over arch rival Hamlin high- lighted the season and gave the Bulldogs a glimmer of play-off hopes. After losses to Sioux Valley and Miller, the teams finished brightly in a 17-6 win over Flandreau, playing their best all-around game of the year. A defense led by Tom Coughlin and Jason Gruenhagen consistently kept the Bulldogs in contention the last six games. A lack of size and execution on offense hurt the team throughout the 1983 season especially near the goal line. As only five seniors were on the team this year, the future holds promise if an aggressive and positive attitude prevail. The Bulldogs got off to a good start winning three of their first four games, but then went into a tailspin in January. Lack of consistency and scoring punch hurt the team during their downfall. The track season was highlight- ed by a Region 3 championship by the men’s squad. Other highlights in- clude two school records: Tom Coughlin in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a time of 42.13 and Robb Schmidt in the triple jump with a leap of 41 ’8”. At the De Smet Booster Club relays Bill Martens was named the outstanding athlete by winning the 200, 400, and anchoring the mile and two mile relays. Qualifiers for the state meet in- cluded only one girl, Jill Baier in the shot and the discus where she finished fifth with a throw of 100'10”. For the boys, Tom Martens, Tom Coughlin, Bruce Johnson, Bill Blogg, Bill Mar- tens, and Robb Schmidt advanced to the state meet. The 800 relay team of Johnson, Coughlin, Schmidt and B. Martens finished in fourth place with a time of 1:34.31. Robb Schmidt also pulled out a sixth place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 40’ 10”. Many personal records were accom- plished but obviously are too numer- ous to list. Should the girls and boys track squads stick together they will enjoy the success that is to come.
