Sheffield, M. Stoel, B. Blogg, J. Gruenhagen, C. Sundberg. T. Coughlin, Marv McCune, Coach. The 1982 football season began as a question mark in the minds of Bulldog Varsity Football Scores fans. After finishing one of the toughest schedules in memory those questions were answered. Through hard work, dedication, and pride the ‘Dogs compiled WE THEY a 6-3 regular season record and ended the year with a tremendous defensive 16 Wessington Springs 6 effort, only to lose a 3-0 heartbreaker at Hamlin, in the first round of the State 14 Webster 32 Playoffs. Returning only four starters from the State 11-A Championship 22 Howard 16 team of 1982, the Bulldogs rebuilt their squad and once again gained state- 22 Arlington 6 wide acclaim. 32 Clear Lake 0 6 Hamlin 19 Seniors, George Cavanaugh, an Argus Leader and S.D. Sportswriters All- 8 Sioux Valley 6 State selection, Tim Martens, an Honorable Mention S.D. Sportswriters selec- 18 Miller 7 tion, Shawn Sheffield, Sean McDonald, Chip Sundberg and Joel Poppen kept 14 Flandreau 29 the Bulldogs near the top of the Sportswriters poll with their fine play each 0 Hamlin (playoffs) 3 week. Juniors, Tom Coughlin, Jason Gruenhagen and Tom Martens all played major roles in the rebuilding process along with sophomores. Rod Anderson, Mark Stoel, Bruce Johnson and Bill Blogg. Several other players gained valuable experience during the season to make the future look bright. The 1983 edition of the Bulldogs proved to many fans that talent isn’t the only thing that builds a fine team. Bulldog tradition carried its weight throughout the season convincing the players that through their dedication and discipline they would be rewarded with their share of victories. A large following of fans supported the team during the season with ever present DeSmet pride and vocal support. The Bulldogs in return gave the fans a little insight into what it takes to be a winner! Coach McCune
