After finishing one of the toughest schedules in memory those questions were answered. Through hard work, dedication, and pride the ‘Dogs compiled WE THEY a 6-3 regular season record and ended the year with a tremendous defensive 16 Wessington Springs 6 effort, only to lose a 3-0 heartbreaker at Hamlin, in the first round of the State 14 Webster 32 Playoffs. Several other players gained valuable experience during the season to make the future look bright. The 1983 edition of the Bulldogs proved to many fans that talent isn’t the only thing that builds a fine team. Bulldog tradition carried its weight throughout the season convincing the players that through their dedication and discipline they would be rewarded with their share of victories. A large following of fans supported the team during the season with ever present DeSmet pride and vocal support. The Bulldogs in return gave the fans a little insight into what it takes to be a winner! Coach McCune 6 Crab it out. McDonald. The De Smet Chapter of the NHS had a thirtieth anni- versary this year. The chapter was started in the 1952-53 school year by Marcus Alonzo Chase. He was in charge of organizing NHS and acquiring the Constitution trom the national secretary in Virginia. He had the strong, guiding hand of the first adviser. Lyle Lester. The charter was issued December 20. 1952. Mr. Lester was an adviser for many years and Mrs. Dannenbring was his assistant. When he retired. Mrs. Dannenbring became adviser Marcus (Lonnie) Chase went into education and was teaching in Watertown at the time of his death. We appreciate the time and efforts he gave to organize the De Smet Chapter and hope the chapter will continue many more years. To celebrate the anniversary a new frame was made for the charter and it will hang in the administrative office. Officers: Bob Timp. Vice-president; Joel Poppcn. Kim Weed; Front, Julie Baierand Becky Gcyer The Bulldogs of 1982-83 began a big rebuilding year in November with only four returning lettermen and no previous starters on the roster. A winning tradition, stingy defense and hard work brought the Bulldogs a very respectable 12-8 season record in the rough Lake Central Conference. A big win overclass A Milbank in the A B Shootout at Brookings in mid-December gave the team an enthusiastic boost and carried them into the new year with high hopes. Two more wins in January brought the Bulldogs to an early season peak. With injuries, illness and a difficult schedule remaining, the team finished the season at a .5(X) pace and a disappointing three point loss to Arlington in the district semi-finals. Defense carried the Bulldogs all season long with their highly respected full court pressure. Offensively the team had trouble with consistency against the several zone defenses they faced. George Cavanaugh was honored with a fifth team. All-State selection at center and also first leam. LCC. Sean McDonald also had a fine season with a first team LCC selection at his guard position. The “Lady” Bulldogs ended the regular season 19-2 after taking a second place finish in the Lake Preston Invitational, defending their crown at the LCC Tourny and clinching the LCC championship with a perfect 4-0 re- cord. They went undefeated through the Region II tourney by defeating Lake Pres- ton 2-0 in the championship match. The “B team compiled a respectable 5-4 season record. Captains for the 1983 season were Seniors B. Geyer and J. Baier. Starters included Geyer and Baier, Juniors Lana Dannenbr- ing, Lisa Sorensen and Wendy VanMeter and Sophomore Jill Baier. All six starters were named to this year’s All-Conference team. Region II All-Tourney selections were B. Geyer, L. Sorensen, W. VanMeter, and J. Baier. Geyer and Sorensen were tournament co-MVP’s. The boys thinclads established nine new meet records while the girls rewrote ten. A lack of depth prevented the Bulldogs from winning many meets, yet the boys managed to outdistance the field in their own Bulldog Invitational with 67 points. The region meet brought excellent weather and record shattering performances. Seven girls: Julie Baier, Becky Geyer, Peg Janssen, Donita Holland, Sandy Goreham, Kris Kaiser, and Leslie Keller along with six boys: Tim Martens, Joel Poppen, Tom Coughlin, Tom Martens. Bruce Johnson and Bill Martens made the trip to the State Meet. The boys squad placed fourth at the state meet collecting 18 points. Bruce Johnson, Tom Coughlin, Joel Poppen and Tim Martens found themselves breaking the tape in the Medley Relay. Second places went to Joel Poppen in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.34 and the mile relay in 3:33.93. The same team established a new state record in the prelims in 3:28.40. The girls team got a fifth place finish from Julie Baier in the 400 meter dash with a time of 60.75. Numerous school records were broken by both squads with the girls setting six new standards and the boys breaking three. J. Baier 200 meter dash 27.23 Becky Geyer 1600 relay 4:13.20 J. Another step toward stardom We accomplished a lot this year, worked hard and had fun. Our new reading series added variety to our reading classes. The students enjoyed it. Each first grader reigned as “Star of the Week” for one week during the school year. During his week the child was recognized for his special abili- ties. One afternoon during the week, his parents and sometimes family members visited class, read stories to the children and brought lunch. We all took part in a Halloween Play, Mother’s Day Play, Christmas and Spring Music Concerts, a local spell- ing contest and a reading program for RIF. Travis Mackey joined our class in January. After the busy year, we are all eagerly looking forward to second grade. Front row. left to right: Stephanie Aslcson. Melissa Gilligan, Billy Engel. Darrel Hallan. Strawberry Land Welcome to Strawberry Land, the home of sixteen first graders, nine Huckleberry Pies and seven Straw- berry Shortcakes. Sammy Schlim and Ross Tieszen moved away during the school year, which reduced our enrollment to fourteen. The only pets allowed in Strawberry Land were reading groups known as the Custard Cats, the Pupcake Dogs and the Hopsalot Rabbits, with an oc- casional “BULLDOG slipping in here and there. During the first few weeks of school we enjoyed a Friendship Tree, which encouraged doing nice things for each other. Each child had a personalized leaf which was held up at the end of the week and the class members were given the opportunity to say some- thing nice about what that child had done during the week. Your Family Clothing Center De Smet, SD Throughout the year each child had a turn at being Student of the Week. On a selected day during each child’s reign, one or both parents joined the class for the opening of the child’s mystery box, a snack and storytime. In October we gave a Halloween Play to the residents at the Good Samari- tan Center and in May we presented a play for our Mother’s Day Program. This was our first year to use the Houghton-Mifflin Reading Series and some of the skills taught were: phonics and decoding, vocabulary, comprehension, reference and study, content-related reading and literary skills. We ended our year with a picnic and a field day. Second Grade Stars We started the year with sixteen sec- ond graders until Noel Tiezen moved at semester break. Our class took part in the R.I.F. contest, which was a reading contest between the classes. We enjoyed doing bug collections in the fall. We gave a Christmas pro- gram for our parents in December. Scott Johnson was a new classmate, but left before the year ended. We finished the year with 24 pupils: 9 girls and 15 boys. One of the highlights for the year was when we made Navajo Fry Bread after reading an Indian story from our new reading books. We corresponded with a class of third graders from New Jersey who were interested in our town and communi- ty. They had been reading the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. We are very busy reading books this year so we can watch our bookworm go around the room and also for the RIF book contest. We lost Troy Scheidt to the Lake Preston School in September and gained Matthew Mackey from Minnesota in January. We had three parties throughout the year: Halloween, Christmas and Val- entine’s Day. Our room mother, Mrs. Judy Meyers, made the parties spe- cial. In social studies, the students wrote letters to the 50 states, requesting in- formation which would aid us in our study of the states. We studied about our westward ex- pansion and as a culminating activity, we visited Prairie Village in Madison, SD. The “Living Museum” depicts the hearty, developing years of the Dakotas. The fifth graders exchanged a scrap- book with the students of Fort Worth, Texas. This was a challenging exper- ience. The students had to do research and organize material on our school, Laura Ingalls Wilder, De Smet, and South Dakota. The fifth graders also studied a unit on Americanism, learning about the heritage of our country. The fifth grade basketball team went to the tournament at Aberdeen in March and Scott Mausbach received honors in wrestling. The students participated in the Jay- cectte Arbor Day essay contest, the American Legion Americanism Es- say and poetry contests, the Soil Con- servation Service’s Conservation Poster contest and the spelling con- test. Several won recognition in each of these events. Use of microscopes, magnets and labs were a part of their science exper- iences. Castles and serf dwellings were special projects done in connec- tion with study of the middle ages. The class painted ceramic mice for Christmas presents. They did many other things as well, including being active in sports and presenting the play “Three Ships” in music. Seven A prepared for the move to the “other” building. They are not cer- tain how they feel about the new mid- dle school. It will be a new adventure for them. Adventures are meant to learn from and enjoy. Seven A will do both.
