NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY .. to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to encourage the development of character.. . The purpose of the National Honor Society as stated in its constitution was well met in 1971-72. The major N.H.S. project was the publication of the bi-monthly school paper, The Spirit Express. President DeAnn Wolkow and co-editors Julie Larson and Julie Skyberg worked on the organization and publication of each issue. Other N.H.S. members worked on articles, features, art work and typing. Throughout the year, the organization worked to earn money for a scholarship to be awarded to an outstanding senior to be selected by the N.H.S. members at the end of the year. Eight new students were awarded membership after the first semester. Six seniors, one junior and one sophomore were selected on the basis of scholarship, service, leader- ship and character. 43 Mrs. Dannenbring and Mr. Lester were the N.H.S. advisors. Purintun, Adviser Mr. Parke, President B. Meyer, B Zeller The student council this year engaged itself in a wide range of activities. Homecoming and corona- tion was the first big project. The parade theme was inspiration, and this year the attendants rode in golf carts in the parade. With the wonderful construction work of the FFA, a huge WL was burn- ed at the pep session after the coronation. For the first time in years they broke even on the dance, featuring the Ecstasy . A major advance as the meeting with the Jaycees and getting them to sponsor a Christmas dance. The dance was held in the Armory featuring the Unbelievable Uglies. It was a great success financially and gave the Jaycees faith in the young people of our community. The student council also met with the school board to discuss free study halls for the seniors. It is hoped they will be extended to a full nine weeks this year. In the fall the student council along with the NHS sponsors a $100 scholarship. 45 Science Club Learns By Doing From Left to Right: M. Smith, G. Bitner, D. Mudhenke, S. Geyer, G. Moeller, J. The FHA State Convention in October brought honors to Patty Peckenpaugh and Sandy Kaufman, who were both awarded the State Degree, an honor achieved by few. Other members within the chapter received their Junior and Chapter Degrees in May. The Regional FHA Meeting was held in March at Sioux Valley. One half of the chap- ter's membership went and several of the girls participated in a skit as part of the program. HARD WORK PAYS OFF!! Welcomes First Foreign Exchange Students Pictured: Regina Pinho, Nathaniel Antonio De Smet High School welcomed two foreign exchange students this year, a first for D.S.H. in many years. Both students found South Dakota quite a change from their native countries. Regina Helina de Barros Pinho is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She was bom in Columbia in 1954. Typing, art, home economics, English and history are the subjects Regina studied at D.S.H.S. Her hobbies are dancing, going to the beach, and listening to good music. Her biggest dream has always been to experience life in the United States. When asked how she liked De Smet, Regina replied, I like it a lot! The Philippines is the home of our other foreign exchange student, Nathaniel Antonio. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Conrado Alvarado Antonio of Davao, the island of Mindanao. Nathan came from a university high school of 500, where students must go to school for ten months out of the year! School hours are from 7:30 to 11:00 in the morning and from 1:00 to 5:00 in the after- noon. Math and science courses are required for all four years of high school. Swimming, soccer and volley ball are the major sports in the Philippines. When asked what he thought about all the snow in South Dakota, Nathan replied, Sometimes I like it. Sometimes I don 't. 90 92 Shall you complain who feed the world ? Who clothe the world? Who house the world ? Shall you complain who are the world, Of what the world may do? As from this hour You use your power, The world must follow you! The world's life hangs on your right hand! Your wrong right hand! Your skilled right hand! You hold the whole world in your hand. See to it what you do! Or dark or light. Or strong or right. The world is made by you! Then rise as you never rose before! Nor hoped before! Nor dared before! And show as was never shown before, The power that lies in you! Stand all as one! See justice done! Believe, and Dare, and Do! Charlotte Gilman THANKS TO OUR ADVERTISERS ! !
