For his interest in each student as an individual and his faith in the worth of youth, We, the senior class, proudly dedicate the 1968 Bulldog to Mr. Drake. MEMORIUM We, the Senior Class of 1968, would like to take this opportunity to pay special tribute to three students of De Smet Public Schools who were drowned in a fishing mishap November 15, 1964, at Lake Henry. Michael Duane Pollock Jr. was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Pollock Sr. of De Smet. Duane entered our class in the fifth grade and was very active in band and chorus . Duane attended St. Thomas Catholic Church in De Smet, James Allen and Wallace Rodney Storhaug were the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Storhaug of De Smet. Jim entered our class in the sixth grade and was very active in basketball and foot- ball. Walley was a member of the fourth grade. Both attended Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bryant. The Bulldogs will have Sioux Valley of Volga for the first home game Friday evening. • Land Judging School Held Saturday For Schools of District The De Smet FF A Chapter will be host at a land judging school Monday, in which eight schools of a district will be present. At this school, students will learn how to rotate crops, what kind of crops should be grown on dif- ferent soils, andmanyotherthings. • • British Young Farmer Visited De Smet FFA Bob Collier, a young farmer from England, who has been in the United States on a three-month tour since August 1, visited the De Smet FFA Chapter September 3 and 4. He is a member of the English organization , Young Farmer’s Club, which is similar to Future Farmers of America. Each year several FFA members tour Eng- land and YFC members tour the United States and Bob has been visiting various South Dakota FFA Chapters. He stayed at the Leslie Dannen- bring farm home and on the after- noon of the 4th he was taken on a tour of the De Smet industrial sights. Descision was reached at the first meeting to have a theme f jr Homecoming floats, and to dis- cuss music for the dance. At the September 12 meeting the student council chose a Home- coming theme. In the afternoon the band played from 12:45 until 1:45 for the Thrillcade Show and that evening played from 6:55 until 8:00 for the late model stock car races. The band left Huron that night at 10:30. The band will play at all of the home football games, includ- ing the one on Homecoming. On October 14. the band will travel tc Sioux Falls for the Augustana Homecoming parade, the event to be televised. It will go to one other home- coming but it has not been de- cided which one as yet. A Homecoming dance will close the event. “Ma s Boys” to pro- vide the music. • Buldogs Recover From Early Setback To Win at Preston The Bulldogs trounced Lake Preston on a visit there Friday evening for the Homecoming event, but only after taking a setback as the Divers scored twice in open- ing minutes of the game. The final score was 32-13 as the hosts were held scoreless through the remainder of the game. Tom Hein scored two touch- downs and Bill Wilkinson, one. LARRY Hein made two conversions. In a game with 146 yards gained outstanding offensive players were Tom Hein. Jim Johnson and Bill Wilkinson. Standouts defensively were George Widman and Larry Hein. Friday night, by de- feating the Arlington Cardinal 36-7. De Se coe d irst on two five yeard runs, one each by Jim Johnson and Jim Siver. Then Lar- ry Akkerman caught two touch- down passes from Jim Johnson, and Jerry Smith caught a third for another touchdown. With the second half under way Tom Hein slipped by the Arlington defences slipped by the Arlington defenses for a 20-yard touchdown run. The whole De Smet squad saw action. (issue of October 26) Snow Queen Contest Attracts 12 Girls A snow queen! Isn’t it a lit- tle early for something like that? Really it’s not. These are just the preliminaries for a state- wide snow queen contest to beheld this winter. The second annual snow queen contest will be held October 28, at 7:30 p.m., at Iroquois school auditorium. Singe is Practicing For All State Choius All State Chorus members are working hard to prepare for the performance at Huron. November 10-11. Spot checks will be held the first day to see if the numbers are memorized, and this calls for many hours of practice. Dennis Hendricks and Scott Purintun. • • B” Bulldog Squad Deafeats Volga 6-0 The De Smet “B;; football team downed a Sioux Valley team by a score of 6-0 in a game Oct- ober 24. Terry Long carried the ball on a kickoff return for 65 yards, to the five-yard line and Leslie Kracht went over for Kracht went over for the game's only touchdown. De Smet held Sioux Valley down to only one first down, while De Smet got 11. Offensively, Steve Hein and Terry Long were the best players, while defensively it was Mark Garry. Pat Rodney and Terry Long. (issue of November 9) SENIOR ON PARADE On June 30, 1949, Lee Dan- nenbring. our next Senior on Par- ade, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Dannenbring in Parkston. Dur- ing these years of high school he says his most memorable ex- perience was his trip to Kansas City. He has belonged to FFA all four years. The eight towns participating were: Arlington. Bancroft, Car- thage, De Smet, Erwin, Iroquois, Lake Preston and Oldham. Na- dine Hannah giving The Candle in the Dark, received an Excel- lent. • • SENIOR ON PARADE It was truly a red letter day on May 16. 1950, for Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Davis Jr., for on that day they became the proud parents of a bouncing baby boy. known to us as Jerry. Senio is Make Decision On 1967-68 Annual The Seniors held a class meet- ing October 24 in the English III ROOM AT THREE o’clock. The main purpose of the meet- ing was to discuss whether to have plain or hard covered annuals The majority of the class wished to have the soft covered ones. This vote was then taken to the school board by Mr. Winters, to be voted upon there. A committee was chosen for the selection of class motto and colors. F.F.A. In Judging Contests Cooperate to Save Pheasants Ron Montross. Lee Dannen- bring. Gene Skyberg, Ron Blach- ford, Wally Grafing, and Loren Wendel attended a livestock and dairy judging school at South Da- kota State University last Saturday. They judged seven classes of dairy animals, three classes of hogs, two classes of cattle, three classes of sheep, and one class of grading of cattle on the hoof. He is Larry, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hein. He was born in De Smet on July 22, 1950. He has brown hair and blue eyes. His favorite class is chemistry. If he was seen listening to records his favorite song would be Red Rubber Ball. Johnny Rivers or the Monkees would most likely be the singers. Doris Day, his favor- ite actress, and Troy Donahue, his favorite actor, could interest him in any movie. He likes to participate in any sport except track. ANNUAL STAFF MEETS The De Smet annual staff met November 7 to plan for annual pictures scheduled to be taken November 9 and 16. It was also confirmed that this year’s annuals will have soft covers as the student body voted unanimously in favor of them. • • • The Junior Class Play Topped School Record The Junior Class this year made a grand total of $268.75 on its play, Do You Trust Your Boyfriend? This is the most money any Junior Class has made on its play. Each member of the Junior Class had an important part in putting this play on. • • Local Declam Winner Gets Excellent Rating In District 3 Event Portia Dannenbring, the winner of a superior rating from the dis- trict declamation contest held in De Smet, accompanied by her di- rector, Mrs. Wolkow, went to Mad- ison November 8 to the Division 3 contest. Seven different schools competed in this contest for the right to go to the state contest. Portia received an Excellent rating. Mrs. Wolkow says the partici- pation and the hard work put into the declam pieces by the students made for a very successful year. Her advice to Freshman is. “Study hard for you're in high school only a short time.” Her future plans are to attend Stewart’s School of Hairstyling. • School Band Players Treated to Show, Lunch, Dancing The De Smet High School held a party last Friday. November 10, as a reward in selling magazines, they all attending the show Dr. Zhivago Afterwardsthey returned to the school for lunch and dancing. The party was sponsored by the Band Mothers with members welcome to bring a guest. • November 14 was a very hap- py day for twenty-two students from D.H.S., as on this day they were taken into National Honor Society. The ceremony took place at the P-T-A meeting. Choice Miss Holiday Candidates Made Four candidates were chosen for the Miss Holiday contest by the Student Council at its meet- ing November 15. They are Mona Rae Albrecht, Diane McKibben, Rosalyn Grafing. and Nadine Han- nah. It was decided to buy an up- right popcorn machine to be used for the basketball concession stand. Booster buttons are to be sold by Student Council members to the grades. Junior and Senior high, faculty and anyone else who wishes to have one. • • Magazine Drive Net Exceeds Past Years For the past three years the De Smet Band has sold magazines. This year the members exceeded the goal of $1400.00. Prizes were selected by the top five sellers. These are 1st., Donnie Pollack, $132, 2d, Greg Gruenhagen, $103, 3rd, Maureen Cummins, $87. 4th, Veda Wallum, $83 and 5th, Kay Halverson, $82. Other members of the band won prizes such as dream pets and mas- cots. The total earning was approx- imately $600. The band is earning money to go to Rapid City in the spring. • Morals and Manners Subject for FHA A record attendance of 91 girls were present at FHA. Monday. No- vember 13, with 25 FF A boys pres- ent to participate in a program on morals and manners. Opening the evening was a series of skits presented by the Freshman FHA girls. Beep Beeps and How to get a Date” proved to be very humorous. The skits were followed by a panel discussion on almost every- thing, but it did originate from mor- als and manners. After the panel discussion the boys and girls split for their bus- iness meetings. BULLDOGS WIN OVER ELKTON The De Smet Bulldogs opened the ’67-’68 basketball season last Tuesday with a decisive win over a high-powered Elkton ball club. Tom Hein was De Smet’s lead- ing scorer with 30 points, followed by Jim Johnson and Dennis Kruse with 11 and 10 respectively. Kruse hauled down 9 rebounds. For Elkton it was Dick Sievert and Ron Klostermen with 18 and 17 counters respectively. The game was Elkton’s second loss. • B Basketball The “B” basketball team con- sists of twelve players and Mr. Drake as the coach. The players are Glenn Klinkel, Fr.; Pat Rod- ney. Fr.; Terry Long. MAROON AND GOLD DAY De Smet High School observed the year’s first Maroon and Gold day, November 28. This is a day when all students wear something that’s maroon and gold to get into the school spirit and pep the play- ers on to a victory. • (issue of December 14) First Defeat of Season For Bulldogs by Volga The De Smet Bulldogs were defeated for the first time this season by the Sioux Valley Cos- sacks. Volga. December 5. The Bulldogs scored 61 points, but this wasn’t enough to beat Sioux Valley’s 67. High scorer for De Smet was Tom Hein with 22. Larry Hein made 17, Jim Johnson 10, Phil Carroll and Larry Akkerman each 4. Tom Hein and Phil Carroll left the game in the last few minutes with five fouls each. The “B” team continued unde- feated with their victory, 37-26. December 5. Mrs. G. Robert Bell talked to all girls, ages 14 to 17, who are interested in being Candy Stripers. The Candy Stripers will do vol- unteer work in De Smet Memorial Hospital and also in the new De Smet nursing home when it is completed. Their work is scheduled to start soon after Christmas. • • • Tigers Defeat De Smet In Fourth Period Rally The Bulldogs were defeated on the Howard visit Friday evening by the score of 68-64. The Bull- dogs led through the ball game but could not hold off a fourth quarter Tiger rally in which a 12-point lead dwindled to a 4- point defeat. Leading the Bulldogs was Jim Johnson with 28 points followed by Phil Carroll with 12. Larry Hein played a good defensive ball- game. After graduation Rosalyn plans to attend Northwest College of Commerce in Huron. • • • College Entrance Tests Taken by DHS Students Some 25 students went to Brook- ings December 9 to take the Ac- credited College Tests. Givenfive times throughout the year, the basic purpose of these tests is an entrance requirement to college. Each student must check the college catalog to see if these tests are required. The results of the test will be sent to the chosen college. Two very important factors are: (1) register through Mr. Stab- be; and (2) the sooner this test is taken in the Senior year the bet- ter. • De Smet Drops Both On Visit of Hitchcock The Bulldogs were defeated De- cember 12 by the Hitchcock Blue- jays. De Smet scored 46 points against Hitchcock’s 51. Jim John- son led the Bulldogs in scoring, with 12 points, Phillip Carrol mak- ing 8 and Larry and Tom Hein each 6. December 11. Each member was to bring a small child, ages 3 to 6 for Kid’s night. A short meeting was held and games played. Debbie Hyink and Mary Myers won three out of eight debates at the conference tournament in Wa- tertown December 2. • • Class of the Week Walking down the street, a garbage can tripped me.” As everyone knows, garbage cans can’t walk but without the know- ledge of correct parallel structure of sentences one would not know how to correct this mistake. BULLDOGS WIN The De Smet Bulldogs got back on the winning trail again Friday by defeating the Lake Preston Divers 66 to 50 in a hotly con- tested game between the two long- time rivals. For De Smet. Dennis Kruse made 18 points and 9 rebounds. Jim Johnson 16 points and 9 re- bounds. They were followed by the Hein brothers. Larry and Tom. with 9 and 10 points, respective- ly. Larry Hein and Jim Johnson each got 5 assists while Tom Hein got two. For Lake Preston. Blain Mil- ler made 14 points, followed by James Anderson with 12. Ander- son also was the Diver's top re- bounder with 7. Stewart played a fine game for the Divers de- fensively. Lead- ing scorers for De Smet were Jim Johnson with 18 points. Den- nis Kruse with 16. and Tom Hein with 15. The other points made were by Larry Hein with 10. Phil- ip Carroll with 6. Randy Asleson with 3, and Larry Akkerman. Dennis Kruse left the game in the last few minutes with five fouls. (issue of January 25) Chapter Farmers Initiated By FFA; Banquet Planned FFA met last Monday evening with the main discussions on the Pheasants Unlimited program and the FFA banquet. There was in- itiation of Chapter Farmers with Randy Johnson, Lauren Poppen. Curt Poppen. Steven Johnson. Loren Wendell, receiving the de- gree. A Creed contest ended with I uren Poppen winning. Dennis Tingle second and Tom Hayden, third. Student Council Pins Offered For Sale The student council is selling booster pins to Juniors and Sen- iors. The pins were originally made to wear at the tournaments. The pin is maroon and gold, made d metal and has a large bulldog with years 67-68 on them. The co6t is 35c. Future Homemakers Working Toward Degrees This year there will be 38 girls working toward degrees in Future Homemaking. The degrees are to help them further their knowledge in Home Economics and the organization. There are Junior, Chapter, and State degrees. There are 23 girls signed up for the Junior Degree, 12 for the Chapter, and 3 for State. After completing the standards and taking a test, each will re- ceive the degree. A key is given to the one completing the Junior degree, a scroll for the Chapter degree, and a torch for the State degree. The test for the Junior degree will be given January 25 at 3:15 in the Home Ec. Room, for the Chapter degree January 24. Girls receiving a degree will be eligible to become officers of the F.H.A. Chapter. • Dhddy Date Night Held By FHA The F HA gave the Dads a chance to go out with their daughters (for a change), as it was Daddy Date Night January 15. The girls brought their fathers. A regular business meeting was held. After this, the Dads played volley ball against the daughters. It was quite an experience to see the Dads participate, even beating the girls! Another game was played to find out how many points ’ the Dads were worth. About 60 were in attendance. • • • Beginner Debaters Compete in Tournaments Two beginner teams of fresh- man and sophomores went to de- bate tournaments. 26 students to Watertown. Januay 6. and 10 to Redfield, January 13. Each team has been success- ful winning half of its debates. They must debate four times. The next tournament is Satur- day. Miss Wolkow is the instructor. o • School Represented In Snow Queen Contest Joan Mae Bonzer. Hecla. was crowned South Dakota Snow Queen for 1968 at the coronation pro- gram. January 13. in Aberdeen. Speech Class Attends One-Act Play Contest The speech class has decided to give two one-act plays. After reading through a number of them. Distant Thunder, and Dark Star were chosen. Miss Mortimer and Mrs. Maguire then decided which they thought were the best. It was Distant Thunder. Students to go from De Smet are Scott Purintun, Bob Springer, Vance Magnuson, Jamie Combs. Gladys Farr and Veda Wallum. Throughout the state there are 1500 students trying out for the All-State Band, which will be at Aberdeen March 22-23, with 160 students as musicians. The solo and small ensemble contest at Brookings. February 14. will take 29 from De Smet. There will be six soloists and en- sembles. The De Smet Band is pre- paring for the District 15 tourna- ment on February 19-20-21. There were also some instru- mental contestants judged. • • (issue of February 8) Seniors Visit Pierre and the Legislature The halls were calm and silent and the study halls were bare and empty Tuesday. Jan. 30, the day 44 DHS Seniors relinquished a full day of school for an educational tour cf the Oahe Dam and power plant and of our state capital at Pierre. Ten cars left at 7 a m., bright and early, and all met at the dam at 10 o’clock. From a tour of the power plant we left for the capital building. They ate at the cafeteria for the noon meal. After eating. Mr. Poppen, our State Senator, led us through the Senate chambers. House chambers and conference rooms. An hour was spent in the Crim- inal Investigation office listening to a South Dakota authority on crim- inal affairs. This lab was filled with evidence on past crimes, fing- er printing equipment, casts of footprints and car tire prints used as evidence in crimes, and a gun display. After this tour, the class split into groups to visit the House and Senate while in session. Mr. Drake, our government instructor took the class through the tunnel to the State Game. Fish and Parks Department Building and the Mu- seum. Cars were driven by Bernard Larson. Ed Poppen. Mrs. Bob John- son. Mrs. Warren Widman. Louis Lee. Lawrence McKibben, Gerald Peterson, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Albrecht. Vern Belzer and Mr. Drake. Each carload left the capital around 4 00 o’clock with a greater knowledge of the activities taking place at our state capital. The activities participated in by this Senior are debate, chorus, football, student manager and track. His most memorable experience in this four years at De Smet was playing football. When asked if he could have one wish and what it would be. George replied, Two and one half Mil- lion dollars, tax free.’ Attending the State School of Mines and Technology at Rapid City is the future plans of this Senior. • • Bandmaster's Convention Mr. Lindbloom attended the Bandmaster’s convention Febru- ary 9 and 10 held at South Dakota State University. There were 106 band directors present. They listened to new music by the SDSU band and heard the Rapid City and Brookings school bands play. Vilo Hobey, clinician, for Selmer Company, presented several forums on intonation and rehearsal techniques. A banquet was held Friday evening when announcements were made of students selected for All- State Band. Scott Purintun was one of them. m • • A SIGN OF GRADUATION The Senior Class met in the Sociology Room Friday to select their graduation announcements. Mr. Riggs, of the Josten Com- pany, the same company from which the class purchased its class rings, showed the different sam- ples. The deadline for the individual orders for each Senior was Wed- nesday. • March of Dimes The Student Council collected money for the March of Dimes February 16. The totals of the classes are. Freshman. S23.98; Sopho- mores, $39.12; Juniors, $23.25; Seniors, $30.43; total. $116.78. The Student Council will col- lect again Friday. DEBATE The debaters at D.H.S. have been attending tournaments for several weeks. On February 9 and 10 they attended an extempor- aneous debate and speech event at Madison. Two students went for extemp- oraneous speeches, Kay Halverson receiving an Excellent and Georgia Kreiger receiving a Good. The debaters were not placed. De Smet will be host to a de- bate and extemporaneous tourna- ment March 2. Students from Lake Preston. Iroquois. Clear Lake. Willow Lake and Watertown will be present. This is a beginner's tournament. The beginner debaters com- peted at Brookings. Saturday. • • m Local Students Attend High School Music Contest Forty-eight sleepy De Smet stu- dents boarded the school bus at 6:30 a m., Wednesday. Feb. 14.for toe mu sic conte st held at Brookings High School. After weeks of preparation, un- der instructors, Mrs. Lawerence Luitjens. vocal, and Jerald Lind- bloom, band, they were full of an- ticipation and a bit nervous about the outcome of the day. One student. Bobby Springer, received a Superior plus on his trombone solo and was also hon- ored with an invitation to appear at the grand concert that evening. Others who received Superiors were: Patty Poppen. alto solo; Jill Grothe, saxaphone solo; Vance Magnuson. saxaphone solo; and the saxaphone and flute ensembles. Jill Grothe, Beth Belzer and Glenette Halverson. ♦ • DRILL TEAM The De Smet Bulldog Cadets, a drill team started by Mrs. Luit- jens. practiced Saturdays and every morning at 8 the week be- fore the first performance, which was at the Arlington game Feb- ruary 9. The members of the drill team bought the material and made their own uniforms, which are black. Pom-poms of maroon and gold were also obtained. They use a combination of three routines. The band accompanies them. Members of the drill team are concentrating on the performance at the District Tournaments in Huron Monday night, at the game between De Smet and Hitchcock. (issue of February 29) DISTRICT 15 TOURNAMENT The De Smet Bulldogs won the District 15 Basketball Tournament for the third year in a row this year. It took victories over Hitch- cock, Tulare and Wolsey to bring the honors at Huron Arena last week. Tom and Larry Hein caught the attention of fans and sports writers with their ball handling and scor- ing. each making 50 points in the tournament. A full report of the tourna- ment games appears elsewhere in The News this week. • • March of Dimes Tops Goal Set The high school for the last four Fridays has been collecting money for the March of Dimes, with a goal set by the Student Council as $150. this topped. The Seniors contributed S49.01, an average of 26.1c per week, and the Juniors contributed $43.38. an average of 19.5c. The Sopho- mores came up with a total of $57.06, which averaged 23.8c per student, and $31.55 or 11.1c per student was contributed by the Freshman. It made a total of $185.00. • Open House Held For Bancroft Parents Parents of students of Ban- croft high school came to De Smet high school Tuesday for an open house. As for advice to underclass- men: Have fun iq your years at DHS, and make the most of them, they go fast.” For the future LeAnn plans on attending Sioux Falls School of Nursing and than joining the Air Force and becoming a Flight Nurse. • • • NATIONAL MERIT TEST The National Merit Test is given nationwide to Juniors in high school on a voluntary basis. A dollar fee is charged. The test puts one in competition for schol- arships. Twenty-four Juniors of De Smet took this test February 27. In the fall, they will find out if they got a scholarship. • • Class of the Week The English II classes, taught by Miss Helen Mortimer, were last week studying one of the most important parts of English, that is, correct capitalization and punc- tuation consisting mostly of mem- ory work. Next week our study will be based upon poetry enjoyment. • • • SENIOR ON PARADE Participating in All-State Chor- us is the most unforgettable ex- perience of Richard G. Peterson, next Senior on Parade. He has been active in other extra activi- ties, such as mixed chorus, boy’s glee club, madrigal, football, track and debate. Dick was born on March 6. 1950. Operation Pitfall Students from 7th through 12th grades of De Smet and the public were invited to attend an assembly in the De Smet auditorium. Thurs- day. for Operation Pitfall,” a group of five inmates of the State Penitentary. who volunteered to make public appearances to pri- marily Junior and Senior High Schools. Purpose of this is to bring to the youths of the state actual cases of men who have experienced the “Pitfalls” of life and have ended up in prison. The inmates are ac- companied to their speaking en- gagements by a prison official. The men speak of their own experiences and what factors they believe significant leading to their incarceration. Topics the five convicts spoke on were: The importance of small inci- dents as primers to larger and more serious acts. The realization that Some peo- ple do get caught.” Alcohol and its correlation to crime. The importance of a good edu- cation (90 per cent of the inmate population are school drop-outs). During their stay, the band members will see the world premiere of a movie. As an added note of interest, the band has recently bought a new base clarinet DE SMET HOSTS TWO DEBATES On March 2. 1968. a debate tournament was held here in De Smet. Towns attending were Wa- tertown. Clear Lake, and Lake Preston Watertown took first and second with an eight win. no loss record each. Lake Preston took third with a six win. two loss record. This tournament was also an individual tournament. Because there was no final round, many superiors were given. Those re- ceiving two-one superiors received trophies. Three of these were given, two students from Water- town and Kay Halverson from De Smet. Kay Halverson. De Smet received a blue ribbon. The boys have been training since March 1. Coach Drake made this state- ment about the team ‘ The boys have been working very hard. We will be quite young as we have only eight Seniors on the squad. However, these eight are going to be very important in any suc- cess that we have this year. We are looking for a lot of help, also f rom some good Sophomores of last year. If we continue to show good hustle, we could give some schools trouble. DECLAM CONTEST An East Central Conference Junior High declamation contest was held March 1. planned and organized by Mrs. Donald Wolkow and the advanced speech class. Miss Mortimer and Mrs. Maguire. Nadine Hannah. Portia Dannen- bring and Mavis Hauff assisted them. De Smet won the contest, with 53 points. Other towns attending, and their winnings were: Arlington with 34 team points. De Smet Pups Again Crown Conference Conference Champs The De Smet Pups have won the title of Champs, after playing in the tournament held at Arling- ton and Oldham. They won over Lake Preston Monday evening, then over Bancroft and Oldham. SEX EDUCATION The sex education program held Monday evening. Mar. 4. was on the social aspect of sex. The Rev. Carlton Hermann spoke, then the Rev. Thomas Mech- tenberg, co-director of Catholic Social Services. Sioux Falls. He told the parents and students in attendance of his field as a social worker and the problems presented to him. There were about 50 parents and students who attended. • Sex Education The Rev. Kenneth Farr pre- sented the psychological side at the second SEICUS (Sex Education Information Council of the United States) class Monday evening. Feb. 26. The second half of the film was shown. Mr. Farr and Dr. Robert Bell answered questions asked. The next class was March 4, The Rev. Carlton Hermann in charge of the program. • • F.H.A. The F.H.A. chapter held its monthly meeting March 11 in the school auditorium. ARound Robin had been planned with Arlington, but its chapter was unable to at- tend. The meeting consisted of dis- cussion on new officers. Region 11 will nominate a candidate for state president this year, Jackie Hannah chosen as De Sinet’s nominee. Margaret Hayden was chosen as a voting delegate to represent the school. Following the meeting a pro- gram was given by the Stewart School of Hairstyling. They gave suggestions on make-up and hair styles. Six girls were on hand to present this program. Our next meeting will be elec- tion of officers with the eighth graders as our guests. • (issue of March 28) Speech Class Helps Put on Play The Speech class is going to be very busy from now until the end of the school year. Especial- ly since they are going all out to help put on and make possible the play, The Diary of Anne Frank. The play takes place in an attic in Amsterdam. This wouldn’t norm- ally cause too much trouble except that this attic has four different rooms. Because the space is limited on our stage the speech class has solved the problem by building new flats and painting them to look like a run down attic of a warehouse. They also built three separate platforms. There are 119 stu- dents from De Smet participat- rig this year. The band will be under the di- rection of Mr. Jerry Lindbloom and the vocal students will be under the direction of Mrs. Larry Luitjens. The mixed chorus will sing Be Thou_ Not Still, from the Bible, and in Latin, and Adoramus Te, by G.P. de Palestrina. The girl’s glee club is to sing Rejoice, by John Darwall. and Charade, by Harry Simeone. How the West Was Won, ar- ranged by Harry R. Welson, and A Hundred and Eighty-five Thou- sand Men, by John Leo Lewis are the two songs the Boy’s Glee Club will sing. The band is to play three num- bers: Vaguero, a concert march, by Nestico, Overture in B-flat by Giovanini. and Symphony No. 4 3rd movement, by Brahms. • Practice Under-Way For All-School Play A number of high school stu- dents are busy in several com- mittees for an all-school play: The Diary of Anne Frank. There are committees on props, adver- tising, costume, construction of stage, etc. The play cast and director, Mrs. Wolkow, have been work- ing hard almost every night of the week with practicing, blocking, and memorizing lines. Two performances will be giv- en. April 19 and 20. • Research in Libraiy Helpful in Preparation ForCollege The English IV students of De Smet High School are start- rig research papers. This is a joint project between Sociology and English. They are to get information about a topic of interest to them and use research material in the library. This will be pre- paring them for college. Along with this they are doing vocabulary exercises which teach them new words that belong to literature, science. English and Art. • Match of Dimes Patty An all-school party was held Tuesday evening at 7:30 in the school gym. Sophomore’s class were ad- mitted free, as they had contrib- uted the most money in the March of Dimes contest this spring. The party was put on by the Student Council, with admission at 25c. A free lunch, pop and icecream bars, was served. For recrea- tion. there were contest games be- tween classes, and other games. A large number of students came. • • (issue of April 11) FHA Assembly Program Presented by FHA Cindy Abraham son, Diane Mc- Kibben, Debbie Hyink, Nadine Han- nah. Jackie Hannah. Kay Halver- son, Glennette Halverson. Michala McCue, Kathy Price, Becky Krick, and Karen Johnson took part in a skit called Miss Popularity. It proved that an FHA’er can meet any situation and handle it in the best way possible. This program was presented at 3 00 on April 5. • • • MUSIC CONTEST The 119 students who partici- pated in the music contest held April 6 at the Brookings High School, were well-pleased with their ratings. The girl’s and boy’s glee clubs and mixed chorus, under the direc- tion of Mrs. Larry Luitjens, each received a Superior rating. The band, under the direction of Mr. Lindbloom, received an Excellent rating. CHORALEERS The Choraleers are a new sing- ing group started by Mrs. Larry Luitjens, vocal director at De Smet High School. Students in mixed chorus were eligible to try- out. and from a field of 44 candi- dates. 21 students were selected. Singing as first sopranos are Robyn Slaight, the only freshman chosen. Roberta Hansen and Debbie Hyink. Mezzo soprano positions were filled by Darlene Beck. Shar- on Schardin, Glennette Halverson, and Jill Grothe. The altos are Cindy Stalheim. Sandy Munger and Betty Pratt. Tenors are Bob Springer, Tom Cecil, Dennis Hen- dricks, Dennis Tingle and Gene Skyberg. In the bass section are Charles Schultz, Vance Magnuson, Dick Peterson, Gary Lee, David Bell and Roger Lee. Accompanist for the Choral- eers is Beth Belzer. The group is practicing each Monday night in preparation for two public appearances in April, and also for the spring concert to be held in May. They will be singing some spirituals, but mostly ‘pop’’ music. Mr. Kennedy Mr. Kennedy, a practice teach- er in American History and World History at DHS is from Clear Lake. He attended Gary High School and is now majoring in His- tory and Social Science at General Beadle. He plans to be in Madison this summer. His plans for next year are to teach Social Science at Great Falls, Mont. • • Dress-Down Day Coming Thursday The student council of DHS met Monday. April 1, at 3:00. The main topic of discussion was that of dress down day. It was decided to have this dress-down day Thursday, April 11. Janice Lee and Gladys Farr were ap- pointed to advertise the day on the assembly bulletin board by making a scroll listing the rules set up by the council. Also decided by the council members was to send a $5.00 memorial to the fund for the Rap- id City cheerleaders who were killed in the plane crash earlier this year. c SCIENCE FAIRS The East Central Conference Science Fair was held in Lake Preston March 29. five students attending it from De Smet. They were Felice Schulte, with a demon- stration on teeth; Jim Bowes, with an exhibit on planeria; Jamie Combs, with his binary computer; and Dick Seeley, with a static electricity generator. There were four different divi- sion for competition: Junior bi- ological, Junior physical. Senior biological, and Senior physical. There were three places given in each category. Vance Magnuson was the only one from De Smet whowonaprize. He got a second place in the Sen- ior physical division. A regional science fair was held in Brookings April 6. The same five students went to this fair. Although no awards were won. some interesting facts were 1 ea rned. The science group from De Smet is advised by JamesCheadle. the high school science teacher. « (issue of April 18) Trophies Won In School Year 67-68 Seven trophies have been won by students of De Smet High School through the year 1967-68. The school became Lake Con- ference champions by defeating Arlington in the last football game of the season, with a 36-7 score. This left the team with a 6-2 rec- ord. However, the two losses were not conference games. With a record of 6 wins and 0 losses, the Bulldogs acquired the Lake Central Conference trophy. The Cross Country trophy and the LCC Cross Country trophy were won by a team consisting of Steve Hayden. Tom Fox, Dale Van Dyke and Mike Coughlin at the Bradley Invitationals. The real contests in track however, occur in the spring. The school wasquitesuccessful in basketball. The Bulldogs won the East Central Conference tro- phy for third place with a 5-win, 2-loss record. The team then fared forth to the District 15 tournament and went all the way for the District 15 Championship Trophy. F rom the district event the Bulldogs entered the Region 4 tournament with great enthusiasm, to be defeated in the finals, to re- ceive the runner-up trophy. The season of basketball brought 17 wins and 9 losses. The Junior High added to the collection of trophies by winning a declama- tion trophy a total point winner. All in all. it was quite a suc- cessful year, one to remember, both for winnings and the exper- ience. Attend Judging School At Sioux Falls The Ag judging team recently attended a meat and livestock school at Morrell’s in Sioux Falls. On this year’s team are: Jim Cummins, Wally Grafing. Craig Johnson. (issue of April 25) SPRING CONCERT De Smet High School will pre- sent its Spring Concert, Friday, May 3. It will consist of girl’s and bey’s glee clubs and mixed chorus, all directed by Mrs. Larry Luit- jens, and numbers by the band, directed by Gerald Lindbloom. The concert will be held in the De Smet School Auditorium for the public. $ C CLASS HISTORY CLASS HISTORY The class of 1968 began its education under the supervision of Miss Mary Ringer, also Miss Arlys Dyce, our first grade teacher. As second graders with Miss Patti Patton as the teacher, the class gained William Shaw, Mel- anie Ibis, Linda Johnson, James Siver, Dick Peterson, Barbara Ol- sen and Danny Buckmaster, and lost Randy Aselson, Steve Ras- mussen. In the third year Miss Inez Sprucelake was the teacher, with Kim Richman and Lee Dannenbring added and Lex Dannenbring. Rose Marie Schelske, Barbara Olsen and Danny Buckmaster lost. In fourth grade Miss Donna Hummel was the teacher, and the class gained Philip Carroll, Mary Carroll, Mavis Hauff, Carolyn Kitchen and Michael O’Connor and lost Patty Aalbers and Bill Shaw. Entering fifth grade with Mrs. Faye Munger and Mr. Arnold Naeve as teachers, the class gained Helen Heitmann. Teresa Mastel and Duane Pollock and lost Pat Krause and Melanie Ibis. As sixth graders under the supervision of Miss Myrna Sees and Mrs. Henry J. Smith, we gained Susan Uriveg. JimStorhaug, Ronald Montross. Gene Skyberg, Susanne Skyberg, Rosalyn Grafing. Ronald Blachford and Earl Brown and lost Carolyn Kitchen and Mi- chael O’Connor. The seventh grade brought the supervision of Lonnie Moon and Miss Lorene Anderson as teach- ers. Linda Larson, Patricia Pop- pen, George Hulbert, Heidi Geyer, Kenny Pope, Margaret Carroll, Patricia Ellinghausen, Patricia Aalbers, Steven Kornder, Carol Anderson, Larry Akkerman and Gail Stechmann were new pupils and none lost. As eighth graders under the instruction of Charles True and Miss Eggert, Mona Rae Albrecht and Connie Van Tassel were added and Kenneth Pope. Heidi Geyer, Gail Stechmann and Patty Elling- hausen lost. As Freshmen with the class advisors of Donald McCaskell, David Edwards and William Wink- le, the class president was Charles Schultz, the vice president, Jim Siver, secretary-treasurer, Diane McKibben, Student council, Lynn Garry, Curt Wallum. As students we gained Michael Cavanaugh, Steve Hayden, Gale Larson, and William Nordland. As Sophomores with John Mund- henke, Gary Meeder and Miss Helen Mortimer as advisors, the class gained Sheryl Clay and Linda Wendel and lost Michael Cavan- augh, Duane Pollock, Jim Stor- haug and Connie Van Tassel. The class president was Larry Akker- man, vice president. Jim Siver, secretary-treasurer. Diane Mc- Kibben. The student council mem- bers were Pamela Williamson and James Siver. As Juniors Laurence Gebur, Miss Fridley and Mr. David Ed- wards were the class advisors. Heidi Geyer, Don Halverson and Helen Kipp were added and Sheryl Clay, Lynn Garry and William Nordlund were lost. The officers were president Nadine Hannah, vice president, Gary Lee, secre- tary-treasurer, Beth Belzer, Stu- dent council members, Diane Mc- Kibben and Curtis Wallum. As high and mighty Seniors with Mrs. Donald Wolkow, Ken- neth Graham and Larry Winters as class advisors, the class gained Craig Andrisen and lost Susanne Skyberg, Pam Williamson, Linda Wendel, Carol McKittrick, Shar- on Norgaard and Sherry Wynn. The class officers were: presi- dent, Jim Johnson; vice president. Mavis Hauff; secretary-treasurer, William Wilkinson, and student council members. Linda Larson and Charles Schultz. PROM The social event of the season for the De Smet school and the public, the Junior-Senior Prom, will be held Saturday evening at the auditorium. It will have The Fourth Dimen- sion. a band of Watertown youths, for the music. Starting at 9 p.m., the dance is open to the public. Choral eers The Choraleers is a music group of 20 students organized by Mrs. Larry Luitjens. They sing popular songs. accompanied by Beth Belzer on the piano. David Bell-guitar and Maureen Cummins on the drums. Their first performance was April 18. They sang Gonna Build A Mountain, and It's Up To Us at the Lutheran church for theALCW convention. Mary Myers, as intro- ductory speaker, gave a short talk on the role of youth of American today. The second performance will be April 29 at Hickory Stick. • • (issue of May 2) SCHOOL PLAY The all-school play. The Diary of Anne Frank, presented April 19 and 20. was a very fine pro- duction, well worth attending. The cast was well-chosen and each took the part well. The stage setting was unique, an upstairs apartment withanattic and two separate bedrooms off the common room and kitchen in which the four members of the F rank family, the three Van Danns and a dentist had to live during the war to escape perse- cution by the Germans. Special effects were created by the use of colored lights on the stage and a spot-light during the diary scenes. The members of the cast, all those who helped with the play and their director, Mrs. Wolkow, deserve congratulations on the fine job they did on The Diary of Anne F rank. • • • CLASS OF THE WEEK Mr. Kennedy, a practice teach- er at DHS, teaches World History, a class of 20 students. They are now studying World War II and its results upon the world and humanity. Before the school year is over, Mr. Kennedy hopes to present events that are living history today HOME PROJECTS The Senior girls have been busy working on projects which concern the home, each girl to hand in a booklet.
