Due to a disappointing turnout at summer practice, the Islanders could field a squad of only 27 varsity football players. This lack of personnel forced players at less than 10096 due to injuries into playing. Among these China dolls were fine players such as Neal St. Anthony, Dan Cousins, Tim Fristrom, and Dan Focht whose injuries were serious enough to force them out of starting roles in several games. To complicate matters, this year's De La Salle team played what was called by most observers the most difficult schedule in the school's long history. Campion High School in Prairie du Chien, Wise, and Dowling High School in Des Moines, Iowa have had nationally ranked teams in recent years. The Islanders stopped a weakened Campion team by a score of 30 to 18, but they then lost to Iowa's 2 private school team, Dowling, by a score of 20 to 6. Weakened by injuries already, the Islanders entered into the well-balanced, tough, Central Catholic Conference competition and emerged with a 2-3-1 record. The other Islander victory came against a spirited Rochester Mayo team. 34 Wild Bill runs for daylight. The margin of victory; Focht and Lewis break up Cretin's extra point attempt in a 8-6 De victory. 36 The Islanders were somewhat more impressive than their record might indicate. The fighting few fought to within 8 points of the powerful St. Thomas Tommies and lost to Benilde by a mere 4 points on a muddy field. Perhaps the two best efforts by the team were against public school opponents. The Islanders were very impressive in tying Minnesota's No. 1 rated Osseo High School in a pre season controlled scrimmage. Against Mayo the Islanders offense jelled and the defense was not scored on in the second half. Other bright spots in the season included De's 5th consecutive Homecoming victory. Assisting Coach McEachem with the defense was Mr. William Johnson who returned to football coaching after a two year absense. Rounding out the staff was Mr. Ed Kamoro-ski whose inspirational guidance will never be forgotten by those individuals who really wanted it . 39 Basketball FRONT ROW: Co-Captains Joseph Lovett and William Johnson; BACK ROW: Mr. William Johnson, coach; Craig Gustafson, Tim Brosnahan, Walter Kcnneally, Mark Stoneberg, Matt Stoneberg, Thomas Schoening, Brian McGuire, Kevin Coughlin, Donald Lamusga, Michael Casey, and Marc Peters (mgr.).; Missing Bob Skelly, Brent Schneider. 40 Jack Pieck fools Islander defense. Big Matt's hook is blocked. The Nicollet Island Domino Theory. The 1970-71 basketball season started out with high expectations, being rated 3 in the independent polls. When the season ended, the hoopers finished with a 9-12 overall win-loss record. The Islanders of 70-71 presented a well-balanced scoring attack. On any one night, the high scorer could change from player to player. Captain Joe Lovett led all scorers in the final season average. Matt Stoncberg finished second while sharing the pivot with Tom Schoening. On the point the other co-captain, Bill Johnson, was the feed man of the offense. Brent Schneider played one forward with both finesse and rebounding power. All-State forward Tim Brosnahan came on fast at the end of the season. Other underclassmen who saw action frequently were Bob Skelly, Kevin Coughlin, and Don Lamusga. The Islanders were led by Mike Sasey, who was responsible for much of the team spirit. He was seventh man by tourney time. The high-point of this season was downing the Red Knights in the Regional Playoffs. 41 Bros attempts a steal. Matt attempts to block a Raider shot. Rarely or never had De and Benilde had such equal teams. The crowd filled De's side of the spacious gym nearly to capacity. The Red Knights were announced first and received cheers from their side. And then And now the Islanders of De La Salle. The crowd gave the hoopers a two minute standing ovation. The team responded. Joe Lovett scored the teams first seven points and De took command 7-1. But Benilde came back and by the end of the first half the Red Joe Lovett has a style of his own as he makes another bucket. Big Matt and Brent go for the ball. ... All for the Islanders... Suddenly the Knights turned a one point De Lead into a 45-42 Benilde lead with just a minute to go and with them controlling the ball. But a Benilde mistake cost them the ball and Schneider hit a clutch jumper from the side and was foulde. Brent sank the tense free throw and again Benilde took the ball down court. Again they made a mistake and the Islanders stole the ball. Lovett gained control and dribbled around looking for an opening. With ten seconds to go ovetime seemed inevitable. Suddenly Brosnahan was open, underneath the basket... McEachern asks: Why can't I get crowds like this? Mickey Mouse tries for another while Tim Brosnahan watches. The grapplers finished the season with a record of seven wins and three losses. Their only conference defeats were twice to Hill and once to St. Thomas. The highlight of the season was a hard fought victory over the stubborn Red Knights to clinch second place in the final conference standings. The rest of the year was marked with strong enthusiasm and spirit. The reason for such a fine record were the outstanding coaching jobs turned in by Mike Cavanaugh and Don Hilson. Their main objective was to make wrestling more enjoyable. They felt this would break the mon-otany of constant working and thus maintain strong interest by the participants. The team was led by Senior Captain Charlie Gross, who did a great job for the team. He kept the spirit of the team up throughout the entire year. Charlie wrestled at 175 and completed the season with a record of 14 wins and 3 losses. He also finished second in the Mankato Loyola, Cretin and regional tournaments, along with a third place in the state. Another senior Denis Luxem wrestled at 120 and finished with 13 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie. He also took first at the Mankato Loyola and Cretin tournaments along with a 2nd and 5th at the regionals and state tournament. Wrestling at heavy weight was a new comer Jon Stroinski, who finished the season with a record of 10 wins and 3 losses. Jon came on in the middle of the season to pin his first opponent and go on to take 2nd at the Cretin tournament along with 3rd in the regions and state. This year's hockey team, originally thought to go a long way, ended its rather dissappointing season on a rather sour note, losing to Breck Academy 6-5 in the Regional Playoffs. Even with an abundance of talented players, the hockey team could not get untracked and they lost their first 6 conference games. Despite a losing record and some bad breaks, they put everything together against Hill (up-to-then unbeaten and C. C. C. champs from the preceding year) and went down fighting, losing by a score of 5-2. This game plus the All-Conference selection of rightwinger David O'Donnell distinguished this year's team. Schools In the season of 1970-71, the De La Salle Swimming Team had one of their best seasons ever. They got off on the right foot be defeating Southwest and Henry before losing their only duel meet all year long to Burnsville. From the moment the first practice started back in October, the Swimming Team had their eyes set on dethroning the State Champs, St. Thomas Academy, who had held the title for the past thirteen years. Dethroning St, Thomas was accomplished under the watchful directions of Dennis Dale, Carroll (Gus) Gustafson, Fr. Tom Hill, and Steve Stewart. We wish to thank these four men for their time and dedication which was necessary for us to win the title this year. This year's team was made up of mostly first and second year swimmers. This means that the Swim Team should be even better next year because they will be more experienced. There are only three graduating Seniors from the team: Dave Jones, Jim Dixon, and Marv Paulson. So next year should bring another championship, IF they all work hard and want to win. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 1971 MINNESOTA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL CHAMPIONS: DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL! The 1971 baseball team was according to Mr. Joe Shrake the best since the 1958 squad which captured the State Independent Tournament. The batmen nearly duplicated the feat of the 58 nine. One of the outstanding assets of the squad, was characterized by its strength up the middle. The catcher was Mike Casey, the holler guy of the team. He was the man who called the shots for the inexperienced De hurlers. De had had an excellent keystone combination in shortstop Greg Schilgen and 26 man Tim Swan. Both of these men started in their initial season of the club. Continuing up the middle we find center-fielder Greg Leblanc. Leblanc the teams best hitter, was capable of hitting for power along with possessing a consistent average. He was a two year man to the All Conference team, being noted for his Killebrew like power and posture. De was also solid at the corners with first basemen Joe Lovett and Tom Peters, the third baseman. Lovett moved to first from left field about midseason and found a home. He was also the teams second leading hitter. Left and right field were platooned with Sr. Billy Johnson and Jr. Joe Klesk capably playing left and sophomore Frank Meyers and Tim Fristrom playing right. Tommy Joe looks it over. The forte of the '71 batmen at the end of the season was their pitching. Junior Dan Heryla and sophomore Tommy Joe Peterson formed a solid 1-2 pitching combination. Another sophomore, Frank Meyers showed promises. All three return next year to form the nucleus of the 1972 pitching staff. Next year the whole infield will have to be replaced due to graduation, save 3rd sacker Tom Peters. But 6 sophomore lettermen are returning and thus the outlook for the future is bright. Mr. Joe Shrake ponders his strategy. Stan the Man Meyers. 59 Cool Hand Evans. The Peterson Delivery. Bunt, Swan! 60 Another De victory. Almost But . . . The place Midway Stadium, the idea taking the baseball trophy back to its rightful place. The two hurdles to overcome were games with the teams from Blake and Minneapolis Lutheran. In the first round the Islanders set Blake down by a 4-2 margin with pitcher Dan Heryla being the steady influence. Next came Minneapolis Lutheran with sophomore going the route with the victory. His efforts were eased by the ability of the Islanders bats to bunch a cushion of runs early in the game. Finally it ended with the De men capturing another Region 5 title with a 9 to 1 score. On the State Tournament which was played at Belle Plain Minnesota. In the first round against Duluth Cathedral Coach Shrake chose Tommy Joe Peterson shoulder on which to rest De's hopes. He met the challenge with an 8-3 decision which was highlighted by Greg LeBlanc's opposite field 3 run homer some 330 feet away. In the second game Heryla dialed Joe Lanasa for five sctfTe-less innings, until Cretin scored in a disputed obstruction call at third base following an error, sacrifice and single to left. The throw by Meyers had the runner out by fifteen feet which set the stage for the collision at home plate in which Mike Casey was knocked senseless (pun). He held the ball which set off a violent but futive rubarb which the coach lost. See Tom run! Run, Tom, Run! In the sixth inning with the powerful Le Blanc up, the crowd came to life. He almost answered their wishes sending a long fly to right which only the wind saved from trying to score. The Raider caught it against the fence. Ending the inning our hope and the season on a bitter note we cannot overlook all the effort the men went through to attain what they did. The next week Brady was beaten by Cretin 6-0, leaving one to wonder what would have happened save the obstruction at third. The way both pitchers were pitching it might have gone on into the night, Heryla pitched a 5 hitter, with Lan-asga yielding but one. Heryla should be commended for his gutly performance in the Church. Joe shows his stroke. Heroic in vain. 61 Tennis Jim Coughlin places another. Track The 1971 track team, despite a 1-9 overall record, was in some ways improved over the teams of recent years. The trackmen were 1-7 in the Conference with their victory being a 71-32 trouncing of St. Bernard's. De lost a 61-58 heartbreaker to St. Agnes. Some of the prominent performers included Tom Van Sloun in the hurdles, Joe Kennedy in the 880, and Paul Renneisen in the 2-mile. Mark Dien-hart was the backbone of the team and took state in the shot put for the second consecutive season and set the school record with a throw of 55 feet, 8 inches. 65 intramural se: 301 (22C) H for tlie chain hausting 20 m teams battled Juniors took tl minutes of the jffflr a narn Finals f • . f I ul game in the Senior advisory dor advisor.- 101 During an ex- Bowling The overall unspectacular play of the golf team overshadowed the better-than-average individual scores of a few members. The golf team never really got going, possibly because of the almost-entirely new makeup of this year's team: only one returning member from 1969-70. The End Comes For The“C” Building2 28 71 A four alarm fire on the afternoon of Sunday, February 28th, destroyed much of our old C building and at the same time provided us with one of our most exciting events in recent history. The fire began in the basement of the C Building and spread upward by means of the ventilators to the roof. Smoke was noticed about 12:30 P. M. and the alarm was turned in soon after. VT CLOSE CALL: A cloud of heavy black smoke and a rending, rumbling roar signaled the collapse of the roof over Room 20C. Several firemen were momentarily trapped but were pulled to safety. One man clambered halfway to safety but got pinned by the falling ceiling. He was hospitalized with minor bums after being pulled to safety by one of his team members. 74 Clean-Up Day: March 1st 76 Monday, March 1st saw the beginning of the cleanup operations as students, faculty, and even some alumni began working on the hard and dirty job of moving undamaged furniture, tools, and records from the C Building to other quarters. 77 Chorus 78 My place at 9:30? 'The Saint Goes Marchin' In' The De La Salle Chorus continued its trend toward musical perfection. The Chorus started its year with the fall concert which was centered around the Hawaian Theme . The highlight of this concert was a dancer who performed an exotic dance before a packed house. The spirit of the chorus then changed to the Christmas season. Songs from the Renneisen Period as well as modem day songs were performed with the help of the St. Anthony Chorus at the Basilica of St. Mary. The Double Alleluha was one of the high points of the concert. With the changing of the seasons, came the spring concert. Among the selections were the contemporary hits; Abraham, Martin, and John , Jesus Christ, Superstar , and Aguarius . The year was wrapped up with an excersion to Denver for three days of the deserving male chorus. The Freshmen Chorus sings for the Patroness Luncheon. 79 Mr. C. speaks at the Christmas Concert. Mr. Roger Berg, organist at the Basilica, accompanies De's Christmas Concert. The Frosh listen for Brother Chad's pitch. 80 Band 'Marlboro Country' in the Basilica? The De La Salle Band took a big step forward with the help of Robert Brown as director. For the first time in many years there was music at the basketball games. The band brought many tunes to De Students' ears, such as Aguarius , the school song, and the second school song Marlboro Country . Also a first was a band concert in the spring held in the gym. When the '70-71' Executive Board took over their positions last April, things didn't look too rosey. The financial problems of the previous year's Executive Board had left the incoming board in debt. President Neal St. Anthony cited the first endeavor to set the currency boat afloat while still providing the students with the best of activities. Treasurer Greg LeBlanc, pen in hand, went to work on the books. With the help of Brothers Joseph and Chad, they were on their way. Under the direction of 2nd V. Pres. Michael Pharr, De La Salle again established the reputation for having big name band dances. Publications man, Thomas Montague, with the help of Daniel Pawlak, drew fine crowds through their informative ways while not only providing evening entertainment for De men but also sone sorely needed revenue. As the summer drew near, the '71' Board grew in their knowledge and effectiveness in running the Student Council. Throughout the summer of '70', meetings were held at which plans were made for the next school year. General Assembly meetings were thorough and informative. The meetings served as active lines of communication between the student and his Council. The Executive Board of '70-71' is rightfully proud of their achievements. They especially proud of the fact that the Student Council at De was the representative of the student and brought the gripes of the student, plus their ideas and opinions to whomever was concerned. Mr. J. has a ready quip ready for Morgan Kennedy. The 1970-71 dramatic season marked the farewell year for Mr. Roger Julkowski who has been a member of the faculty here at De and the Director of the fine productions presented by the De La Salle Drama Club over the past three years. Thank you, Mr. J! This year's dramatics club had a bright year with the productions which were mounted. In addition to their participation in this year's Christmas Pageant with the school chorus (a repeat performance of last year's success), the season boasted several firsts: the first De production to be written and scored by a De student, REVELATION, by Robert Sery, graduate of 1969-70; and the first production directed by a student teacher, Gary Heisserer, graduate of De in 1969-70, who came back from St. John's University to directed the presentation of Shirley Jackson's powerful allegory, THE LOTTERY. The probable highlight of this year's season came in May when the Drama Club staged THE MANY LOVES OF DOBIE GILLIS, which production brought the 1970-71 season to an hilarious conclusion. 100 Bruce Bushey and Mike Ketter react in a scence from REVELATION. 101 Dobie Gillis (Mike Felien) gets another scheme going.
