On arriving at Hillcrest each young lady was presented with a leather bound program and on leaving she received a beau- tiful storybook doll dressed in the school colors. Afterward the greater majority of the class went to eat at Lou's M-Z9 in New Baltimore, Michigan. B. Under the skillful moderation of Br. Cyril, the debating team of RogerGoebel and Gerald Pavlik, Seniors, and Henry Adams and William Giovann, Juniors, en- joyed its most successful year in school history. As usual, the school participat- ed in both the State and Metropolitan Leagues and in each attained an impressive record. In the State League of 160 high schools with approximately 1500 debaters, the team reached the State Semi-Finals and the rank of third in the state. By doing so the team set a new school record, surpassing that of the team of 1944 which had reached the Quarter-Finals. Along the way to this notable goal, the debaters con- sistently defeated much larger schools, winning 5 out of 8 debates in the regular schedule, then going on to the District Championship with victories over Birming- ham, Troy, Pontiac and Owosso in the Regional Tournament. Taking the Affirm- ative, the team next defeated Plymouth in the Quarter-Finals before its final de- feat by Lansing Sexton in a hotly contested Semi-Final Debate. In the Metropolitan League the debaters also had a successful season. They achieved the unique record of 8 victories and ho defeats to obtain their Division Championship. Although defeated by Birmingham in a split decision, the team still received the creditable position of Runner-up. Altogether, the team attained an enviable record in difficult competition to again maintain the high scholastic reputation of De La Salle. Pavlik Clarifies the Negative Stand.
