'ff , VL Ari 'fn' ,J av' l - T. ii. , ' I E IIISHIRY .IUNIORS As Juniors, we were now comfortably settled at La Salle. Many of us found the mastering of physics eased by the illustrations of Simon Lightfoot and his band of Happy Pilgrims. This was also the year of the spirit rappings in room 21. Coach Bonino's men swept to the East Side Football Championship, taking time en route to blast the Bluejays once again. The highly successful Junior Prom, with music supplied by Leonard Stanley and his Trio, was held at the Detroit-Leland Hotel. For their excellence in scholastic work, Roger Goebel, Ber- nard Kulwicki, and Gerald Pavlik took the scholarships. SENIORS After carefully examining ourselves with considerable disbelief, we discovered that we weren't the decrepit old fossils we thought we would beg as a matter of fact, we found it difficult to believe that nearly four years had gone by in the last fifteen minutes. Class officers for the senior year were: Robert Mansfield, President, Robert Coseglia, Vice-PresidentgGordon Black, Secretary, Richard Martin, Treasurer. The Oil Can once againpreserved from defile- ment by our team and the basketball squad brought us an- other trophy---this one for the East Side Championship. The La Salle debating group turned up as one of the state's top three. A new journalistic venture, THE CO-PILOT, a school newspaper, was launched. The annual Halloween dance was sponsored successfully by this class. The Senior Prom was, of course, the top social event of the year,fea- turing the music of Ralph Bowen and his band and was held at the Hillcrest Country Club. At graduation time we took our first steps into an uncertain future in an unstable world, grateful for the knowledge we had gain- ed and for the character-building moral training we had been given at De La Salle by the Brothers of the Christian Schools. By defeating St. Ladislaus they qualified to play St. Mary's of Mt. Carmel at the Univer- sity of Detroit. The members of the team work- ed hard throughout the season and were rewarded by the many good things that the city sportswriters had to say about them. The many exciting mo- nents of basketball they showed were just a reward for their faithful fol- lowers. Paced by seniors Don Mattes, John Maloney, Bob Mansfield and Ron Cimino along with juniors Don Dembek and Stan Filip the Pilots compiled a creditable record. The team lost only one league encounter that being an early season victory for St. Stanislaus. I ...QW ou- -any -Q-. 75 - x r 4 Rf. Music was furnished by Ralph Bowenand his orchestra. On arriving at Hillcrest each young lady was presented with a leather bound program and on leaving she received a beau- tiful storybook doll dressed in the school colors. Cyril, the debating team of RogerGoebel and Gerald Pavlik, Seniors, and Henry Adams and William Giovann, Juniors, en- joyed its most successful year in school history. As usual, the school participat- ed in both the State and Metropolitan Leagues and in each attained an impressive record. In the State League of 160 high schools with approximately 1500 debaters, the team reached the State Semi-Finals and the rank of third in the state. By doing so the team set a new school record, surpassing that of the team of 1944 which had reached the Quarter-Finals. Along the way to this notable goal, the debaters con- sistently defeated much larger schools, winning 5 out of 8 debates in the regular schedule, then going on to the District Championship with victories over Birming- ham, Troy, Pontiac and Owosso in the Regional Tournament. Taking the Affirm- ative, the team next defeated Plymouth in the Quarter-Finals before its final de- feat by Lansing Sexton in a hotly contested Semi-Final Debate. In the Metropolitan League the debaters also had a successful season. They achieved the unique record of 8 victories and ho defeats to obtain their Division Championship. Although defeated by Birmingham in a split decision, the team still received the creditable position of Runner-up. Altogether, the team attained an enviable record in difficult competition to again maintain the high scholastic reputation of De La Salle. Pavlik Clarifies the Negative Stand.
