POEMS FOR YEARBOOK POVERTY The Wolf Pack Eyes that burn like smouldering coals. ready to roast the red and dripping meat. Teeth as sharp as the North wind's frosty tongue. swirling off the snow-bound Northern peaks. Ears as keen as a freshly whetted axe. sharpened to chop down the gnarled Tree of Life. Padding feet as silent as the tread of damned souls. doomed to pace solemn corridors for enternity. And a hunger that dwarfs the pleas of Tantallus, in the legends of the sun-dappled Greeks. The wolf pack. Seeking prey in the winter of the world, when the frost-gods reign. —by Matt Duckworth No, not I I wake up in the morning the first day. The first day of the ninth grade. Fearful, scared, shy. and small. Such a big place, so many people. I say to myself. Don't lose your schedule. Go to 1st. then 2nd. then 3rd, And on and on and on... How do I get there? Where is that? I rush through the crowed hall meeting new people with nervous smiles, Watching out for the gigantic 12th graders. Who proudly walk by, cool, calm, and collected. It’s the end of the day. my first. I let out a sigh on a crowded 69A That I’ll be catching for three more years... Tenth grade, first day. Cool, calm and collected I look way down at the meek little ninth graders. Of course. I couldn't have ever been like that. Sitting alone by the window, Watching children play Put on a record. Music playing But you don't hear a word it say Try to think But your mind grows weak Your thoughts just drift away worried about money Cause you got bills to pay Don't give a damn Everything is a sham Trying to live off a dollar a day Start all over, look for a job Company's not hiring today Want to rob a bank But you are scared Don't want to bite the bullet today What can you do. your children need Shoes and the food was gone yesterday The rent's coming up You can’t pay Pretty soon won't have nowhere to stay Go to the Welfare, ask for help Couldn't find a job many a day Get an interview Social Worker tell you She can’t give money away. Start all over? —by Anntoinette Workmon DeAnza Poetry Finalist “78-79” Advisor-Mrs. Judkins No. not I. —by Alette Bowers Ninth Grade 185
