A TRIBUTE For 34 years DeVilbiss High School has been honored to have as a distinguished faculty member Mr. D. Norman Stalker. Beginning as an industrial arts teacher and advancing to department chairman, he has established an excellent reputation among his colleagues and students. For 28 years of his service to DeVilbiss, Mr. Stalker devoted a large portion of his time to advising the staffs of the Pot O’ Gold. To those publica- tions students who were able to know Mr. Stalker well, he became a close friend and a conscientious adviser. To honor Mr. Stalker and his years of devotion, the 1965 Pot O’ Gold staff dedicates this yearbook to him. TO DEDICATION

No amount of study or literary knowledge can compensate for the lessons we learn ¢ from one another. When the books are pushed aside and the time for leisure takes over, | high school students enjoy a most necessary part of their maturing process. Being a part of the spirited crowd as the team moves on to victory; serving, entertaining, and hosting adults; enjoying the company of school friends; | or spending a few moments with a special friend— ) these are paths which guide | each of us toward adulthood and give us unforgettable memories of our DeVilbiss days.

On January 14, 1965 every member of the student body and the faculty of DeVilbiss lost a dear friend with the death of Mr. Russell Brown. For over 40 years in the field of edu- cation, 33 of those spent at DeVilbiss, Mr. Brown served as a friend and adviser to all who knew him. Students could feel free to come to him with questions, for he was never too busy to listen. Whenever a teacher had a problem, he could bring it to Mr. Brown knowing that it would receive prompt attention, for Russell Brown was a man of action. As a Spanish teacher, he had the ability to make the language alive and interesting, for he loved what he taught. It was to Mr. Brown, in the capacity of College Counselor, that many juniors and seniors came with their questions of “What should I do?” or “Where should I go?”. Hundreds of students he advised who are now successfully established in college or in a job must give much credit to Russell Brown. Mr. James Krupp, a member of the Mathematics Department, taught at DeVilbiss for eight of his fourteen years in the city system. His death, on February 25, 1965, was noted at DeVilbiss by the reading of the following poem: This was Jim Krupp— Old enough to have known life And its responsibilities; Old enough to have touched the lives Of hundreds of boys and girls Through his coaching and his teaching. But young—too young— For there was no time To see his children grow to maturity; No time To reach the peak of his profession. He had taught a relatively short time— Perhaps a third of the years He had dreamed of teaching. Yet he has left us a legacy— To do well what’s given us to do And to do it now. ; —Olive McHugh
