For several weeks preced- ing the big day, D. H,S. was a bee hive of activities-- planning floats, election of host and hostess, and the dance. The big day finally arrived and excitement filled the air. The traditional assembly was followed by the alumni reception. At two o'c1ock the crowds gathered to observe the big parade. The Keyettes won firstprize with the theme, Let's Snow Jax Tech Under . The football game made everything a per- fEctH0mec'0ming'as the Bulldogs triumphed to a vic- tory over Jax Tech. Climax of the day was the formal dance at the Hotel Putnam following the game. Wasn't it fun giving the first football dance? Then to keep the school spirit the highest ever, we sold wavers and booster badges at 311 the games. Re- member how scared we were when we had to climb those goal post to decorate' before the games. we sure worked ourselves to the bone to get our float finished the night before Homecoming. But it was worth it when we won first prize. We served both school and community. We attended church in a body every six weeks, assisted and ushered at Big Brother Talent Show, sponsored Boone High Tumbling Team, and redecorated assembly dressing rooms. I953 VARSITY FCOTBALL SEASON The DeLand High School Bulldogs again turned in a highly successful gridiron season and emerged as South District Champs, and runners-up in the East Florida Conference. The Bull- dogs ended the season with a 7-3-1 record. The Purple and White empressively opened the season with one sided win over St. Leo. They were defeated by Palatka in the next game, but bounced back to defeat a favored Green Cove team by a large margin. The boys then travelled to St. Augustine during a hurricane and came from behind in the last two minutes of play to a tie a heavily favored Yellow Jacket team on a rain swept field. Our rivals, Seabreeze, were defeated in finevstyle, but in the next game the Bulldogs were overpowered by a strong P. K. Yonge eleven. The team then embarked on a four game win streak starting with a close fray with New Smyrna. D,H,S, then celebrated the best Homecoming yet, with a win over Jax Tech. Eustis and Sanford then fell before the Bull- dog machine. The win over Sanford gave the team a crack for the conference title, but crip- pled by injuries, they lost to a fine Palatka team.
