SENIOR C LASS HISTORY Bill Coleman . . . President Margie Gack . . . Vice President Donna Hirsch . . . Secretary, and Cheryl Blakeney . . . Treasurer and the capable assistance of our Executive Board helped us make plans for the first junior Prom ever at De La Warr. Held on St. Valentine's Day, the theme for the prom, Winter Wonderland, proved appropriate. Before the night was over, it had begun to snow. In the spring, we chose responsible leaders for our most important year as Seniors! Our senior year, for which we had waited for so long, was finally here! With the opening of our happiest year came the sad realization that it was also the final one. Determined to make it the best yet, we plunged into it with an enthusiasm that would never be forgotten. Homecoming, although rainy, proved to be a bigger success than anticipated. The first annual float competition, held at the Thanksgiving Game, was won by the Senior Class with their float being awarded first place over two equally interesting floats. With the help of our Senior officers: Bill Coleman . . . President Don Tunstall . . . Vice President Diane Stecher . . . Secretary, and joe Brown . . . Treasurer we have enjoyed the best year ever. ln the spring we could look forward to our Year- book Buffet, our Senior Prom, Baccalaureate, and finally, Graduation! As our interlude at De La Warr is about to end, we reluctantly leave to again be- come individuals in a world of conformity. We do not consider the time spent here as tolerated, but rather as an integral key to our growth. We leave with regret, but with hope that future senior classes at De La Warr are able to derive as much from their years here as we have. Our education would not have been as complete without the ever present help of our teachers and advisors. It is to them that we now pay tribute for their steady help throughout our education. May we leave our footprints in these sands of time, never to be erased. 47

SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Time, as a gauge of progress, measures the individual as well as the group. Twelve years ago we each traveled our separate paths. Many of us began our formal education in this district. Others have since joined us . Now we find ourselves united as one body. In 1961 we were proud to become the first freshman class to ever attend De La Warr. Our officers: Chuck McCallion . . . President Cheryl Blakeney . . . Vice President, and Margie Gack . . . Secretary-Treasurer led us in our contributions in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in extra- curricular activities. We were amazed at the success that such a newly-organized group could make. Our calendar included a St. Patrick's Dance in March, and our first class trip, taken in the spring to the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. Our class administration organized a system by which our class dues could be paid during our four years at De La Warr. As we began our sophomore year at De La Warr, we were happy to welcome into our class those who had recently graduated from Dunleith Junior High School. Our efforts that year included a field trip to the Philadelphia Naval Hospital and a tour through Aquarama. Under leadership of: Bill Coleman . . . President Chuck McCa1lion . . . Vice President Cheryl Blakeney . . . Secretary, and joe Brown . . . Treasurer our class enjoyed a successful sophomore year. The beginning of our junior year marked the halfway point in our high school edu- cation. Our first activity was a class trip to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, which linked the past with the present. During the Christmas season, the holidays were gladdened by our Christmas Dance. The co-operation of our officers: 46

DEDICA TION We, the fifth graduating class of De La Warr, wish to honor Mr. William Conrad who has guided us well since becoming class advisor during our freshman year. After graduating from college he began his teach- ing career at Wicomico High School in Salisbury, Maryland, Where he taught science and coached the football, basketball, and track teams. After leaving Wicomico High School, he became a member of the faculty of Newark High School Where he taught biology and chemistry and coached the football and basket- ball teams. Since he came to De La Warr four years ago, he has taught general science and biology. His past experience with sports better enabled him to serve as assistant coach of the track team for two years and as assistant coach for the junior varsity football team in our senior year. We earnestly hope that dedicating the l965 De La Warrian to Mr. William Conrad will show our respect and admiration for a teacher who will not soon be forgotten. 48
