Yakima Was y Fortunate To T Have These Two Great A y Educational MR. MlLToN MARTIN MR. A. c. DAVIS Superintendent Superintendent l947-I968 l9l3-l947 Mr. Martin began his teaching career as mathematics teacher, coach and high school principal at Prosser from l926 to l93O. ln l93O, he moved to the Lower Naches Dis- trict where he served as Superintendent for a period of four years. From i934 to l946, Mr. Martin was Superintendent at Clarkston. In I947, Mr. Martin became Superintendent of the Yakima Public Schools. A post which he held continu- ously from I947 to his retirement in the summer of I968. When Mr. Martin became Superintendent in l947, the Yakima District consisted of only I3 schools with an enroll- ment of 8,l38 students. Twenty-one years later at the time of his retirement, there were 23 schools with a combined enrollment of l2,405 students. He has been very active in community affairs. A few of these activities included being president of the United Good Neighbors, served on the Board of Directors of the Red Cross and president of the Yakima Council of Church- es. Mr. Martin also found time to teach various summers at Washington State University, University of Washington and C.W.S.C. Davis students and faculty wish him a happy retirement and want to acknowledge their appreciation for Mr. Mar- tin's excellent efforts to make this one of the best school districts in the state. Mr. Davis, for whom A. C. Davis Senior High School was named, passed away on November 4, l967, at the age of 87. Mr. Davis began his teaching career at Bishop College, Marshall, Texas. From Texas he went to Linfield College, Oregon, where he taught chemistry and physics. Then he became head of the Spokane High School Physics Depart- ment. Next he served as principal at Couer d'Alene High School. ln l909. he became Yakima Senior High School principal and was promoted to Yakima Public School Su- perintendent in l9l3. He served as Superintendent from l9I3 to his retirement in I947. Besides his outstanding job as a school administrator, Mr. Davis participated in many community events. To men- tion but a few, he served on the Yakima YMCA, Salvation Army, U.S.O., Red Cross Chapter boards and was president of the Yakima Rotary Club. He devoted much of his time to help raise funds to keep Yakima Rotary Club. He devoted much of his time to help raise funds to keep Yakima Valley College in operation. He served in France in l9l9 as a mem- ber ofthe American Education Corps after World War I. He also was elected president of the Washington Education Association. The students of A. C. MR. DONALD B. DAVIDSON Principal I9S7-I968 Mr. Davidson has been principal of A. C. Davis Senior High School since January, l957. He served as assistant principal, counselor and mathematics teacher from l952 to I957. Before coming to Yakima, he was principal at Granger High School. He has taught in Tonasket, Western Kansas and in Colorado. He received his Bachelor of Science de- gree from McPherson College and his Masters Degree from Washington State College. He has attended summer school at the University of Washington, Stanford and C.W.S.C. Mr. Davidson has been very active in both school and community affiliated organizations. To mention but a few, member of the Yakima and Washington Educational Asso- ciations, served as president of the Yakima Council of Su- pervision, president ofthe Department of Washington Sec- ondary School Principals, worked on the staff of the Twin- low Student Leadership Conference and a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Yakima. When he first came here, the school was named Yakima Senior High School. ln l957, Eisenhower High School was opened and the student body was split. lt was then that the school was named A. C. Davis Senior High School. Under Mr. Davidson's very efficient administration, there have been many winning athletic teams, outstanding plays and musical events, and many Davis students have gone on to fame and fortune. Principal Promoted To Yakima School District's New Computer Center Other highlights of Mr. Davidson's years here include the development of the honors program, team teaching, independent study, expansion of vocational programs and participation in nation-wide surveys of the Comprehensive American High School by Dr. James R. Conant and the University of Pittsburg Science Talent Search. During these last few years, he has devoted much time towards the planning of the new buildings for Davis. The first phase of this building program was completed during this year. Students, parents and faculty members will miss Mr. Davidson as he has been an inspiration to all. Under his thorough administrative ability, A. C. Davis Senior High School has become one of the top schools in the state. Suc- cess to you, Mr. Davidson, on your new challenging assign- ment in the computer field of knowledge!!
