FIVE GAMES AY After a disappointing 1985 season 17-31, the Carter Cowboys made a promise to themselves: All the way to state! A road trip to Tyler to play John Tyler High School proved fruit- ful as the Cowboys came away with their first victory of the season, 27-O. Other non-district games against Fort Worth O. D. Wyatt Q39-Ol, Longview Q19-OJ, South Oak Cliff 144-191, and Spruce 134-141 upped the Cowboys' record to 5-O. The district season opened with drubb- ings of Pinkston C48-OJ and Sunset 157-OJ, but the schedule got harder as the weeks progressed. Thomas Jef- ferson was a tough opponentg Carter barely escaped with a 20-14 win. W. T. White proved to be a little easier Q33-141. The regular season ended on a low note with a 7-6 loss to Kimball on Homecoming. Placing second in district, Carter faced Richardson in the Cotton Bowl for our first playoff game. Winning 14-O, Highland Park was to be our next victim. But Highland Park surprised the Cowboys with their offensive attack and won, 31-11. The Carter Cowboys anxious- ly await next season, when they hope to be less than five games away from the state championship. 168 A TIME The Cowboys leave the field, dejected after their 7-6 loss to the Kimball Knights. Milton Watkin 4173, avoids Kimball tailback Chandler Reed for a 65 yard kickoff return

AITI GI THE WINGS Playing on a junior varsity or freshman team is a tough job. There is not the attention that is paid to the varsity team. There are no stars that are featured regularly in the paper. This is the lower and middle stage of training for the big leagues. These young men are waiting in the wings for their taste of the varsity glory. 0 J .V. Football Team I E 1: I s-s. Q1 --es :Q ,Qfif 1 'Q l i I 'H ' ..
