Carter Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. Douglas Baskin and Errol Simms, no longer views music as mere enter- tainment, but as an international language. The music they play becomes expressions that can be interpreted in many languages. The mar- ching band expresses its views while perform- ing to the ballad, The Way We Were. The drum majors Kevin Alexander and Anthony Cokes express their teelings by leading part of the band down field to climax the ballad. Student Life 29

:i'5tCEH1?f'fE'JIfQEl' JSI -QRS CEU YEAR -.I Q-lilil -I This year's teacher of the year nominee from David W. Carter High School is Frances Weygandt Spradlin. Mrs. Spradlin has been an instructor at Carter for 13 years but has total of 20 years experience, with teaching specialties in the fields of English, history, journalism and drama. A 1961 graduate of South Oak Cliff High School she did her undergraduate work at Texas Wesleyan College in Fort Worth, and received an M.L.A. from Southern Methodist University. She has also completed 18 extra hours in journalism from SMU. Her first year of teaching was spent at Brady High School, Brady, Texas, followed by a six year stay at Edison Middle School before coming to Carter. Mrs. Spradlin is a member of the D. W. Carter PTA, CTD, TSTA, NEA, and the Na- tional Council of Teachers of English. At Carter she has spent countless extra hours working with students as a jour- nalism sponsor, one-act play director, pep squad sponsor, senior prom sponsor, as well as working with all phases of gradua- tion for the past 13 years. . ,om,4k iM 711 The honoree at the reception elevates the cake for the camera
