BRAVE NEW WORLD 0 Brave New World that hath such people in it. The Tempest. This year of the 1984-1985 brings D. W. Carter High School to the threshold of a new world. We survived 1984 and it was not as terrible as Orwell had predicted. Freedom is still freedom. War is still the opposite of peace. And Carter still has a good thing going. But the changes are many in this year. A new set of rules from the state legislature, a new set of graduation requirements, and a new local administration are just three of the elements which make 1985 a brave new world for D. W. Carter High School. Aldous Huxley wrote his novel entitled Brave New World which shocked its age with the fantasy of human infants gestated in bottles. But our time has seen the reality of in vitro fertilization or by its more popular name test tube babies. As changes go on in our world outside, we change, too, in our response and preparation for that world. We are called upon to bravely set forth on the sometimes uncharted seas of the future. We face with courage our brave new world. 4

DEDICATION The ROUND-UP staff respectfully dedicate IX Wolumey of Round-Up to the memory of Mr. Andre Savala who was fatally injured in a car-motorcycle accident during the 1983-1984 school term. Andre was a junior at D. W. Carter High School. He was very interested in photography and probably would have served on the yearbook staff if he had survived! Sharing with his family the sorrow felt at their loss, we hope that this book may serve as a token to insure that Andre Savala will not be forgotten. 5
