GREETINGS from CONGRESSMAN AUGUSTUS F. (GUS) HAWKINS Mr. Hawkins conferring with Senior Interns for 1980 L to R Saralee Todd, Legis- lative Aide; Mrs. M. Relph and Mrs. L. Barnett, and Congressman Hawkins. Augustine F. Hawkins, Democrat, re- presents the twenty-ninth Congres- sional District of California which in- cludes the cities of: Walnut Park, South Gate, Huntington Park, Cudahy, Vernon and Bell. He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, the son of a Pharmacist. At age 11, his family moved to Los Angeles. He earned a de- gree in economics from the University of California at Los Angeles and at- tended graduate classes at the Univer- sity of Southern California ' s Institute of Government. During the 93rd Congress, Represen- tative Hawkins authored three land- mark pieces of legislation and worked successfully for their Congressional approval. They were: The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act which became Law September 7, 1974; The Community Services Act, Ti- tle VII section amendment to the Equal Employment Opportunity Act, which was passed into Law April 12, 1974. Three other pieces of legislation, auth- ored by Congressman Hawkins be- came Law in the 95th Congress: CETA, Comprehensive Employment and Training Amendments of 1978 (P.L. 95-93) on August 5, 1977; and. The Pregnancy Disability Act (P.L. 95-555) on October 31, 1978. Representative Hawkins continues to be an exemplary image of his own per- sonal view of public service: The leadership belongs not to those who beat the drums or blow the trumpets, but to those who day in and day out, in all season, work for the practical real- ization of a better world — those who have the stamina to persist and to re- main honest and dedicated.
