Burns, Varsity Football Jordan's always a bridesmaid, never :1 bride Gridders once again come within one game of the Coast League title in 1953 as they fell to Wilson in their final game by a count of 237. The Panthers, who had been tabbed tor the cellar by local i'experts , rocked the forecasters on their heels by tying pre-seuson championship favored Lynwood 6-6 in a game which saw the Cats leading up until the final five minutes. The Panthers become the first team to beat the Compton Tarbobies since they entered the League by dropping them 13-12. They also continued their one point iinx over the cross town rival, Poly Jackrabbits, by edging out the Hares 14-13. Last year the Panthers won 2049. Jordan played one of the roughest schedules in the southlond prep ranks, meeting C. I. F. champion, Santa Monica, in their initial game. In one of the moior games of the year the Panthers drubbecl an outclassed Downey Viking squad 13.0. It was expressed by many experts and old time football fans that Jordan had one of the fastest high school teams in Southern California history. Their speedy backfield consisted of Joy Hogey, quarterback; Ed Louer, left half; Fletcher Harding, fullback,- and Rickey Maris, right holtl Lquer who has been clocked at 10l1 in a track suit was the lone Panther to make the All-Coost League squad. Ed was also on AlI-City selection and back of the year. This year was primarily a build up for next year with seven returning Iettermen, C. H. Macklin, Harold Garrison, Ed Davenport, Larry Webster on the line, with Fletcher Harding, Derrel Gollihugh, and Roy Blanchard in the backfield plus a host of Bee gridders. Rickey Maris, who turned in the longest run from scrimmage with Cl sixty-nine yard dosh against Alhambra, averaged six yards per effort. Fletcher Herding, junior fullback, made many a first down with his kniting drives up the middle. All this. could not have been accomplished without the fine defensive line play that stopped mony goal line thrusts with the crashing of Bob Elzengo, Henry Frese, Dan Rodgers, Lorry Webster and bull like charging of Joe Valdez, Earl Finney, and Curt Botchelder; and the Iinebacking of Ed Davenport and Bob Jensen. This could have been to no avail if it were not for our fine coaching staff of Bob Parke, Dick Brown, Bill Crutchfield, and Barney Earnhardt. St-rronbnrg, Ilanchard, Lau-r. Hunari, sherwud.
