Being a true musician herself, she has raised her students to high standards of musicianship. l'ler retirement this year will be keenly felt, for it will be difficult to replace one whose discriminating artistic sense has marked all her work. We shall also miss her kindly courtesy and cooperation which has never failed in her eight years of loyal service at Jordan. FOREUJORD ln this present world conflict all of us need always to be aware ot the important part that production and transporta- tion play in the all-out drive for victory. ln the opening pages of this book the Trailblazer Staff takes the opportunity to present a reminder of this fact. Allan Acosta and Hal lvlarron, IZA students, and Joaquin Miller, instructor, are the photographers. ,7 .41 f lf ,fri l + s bminisffzafion JOHN Vv'. WILSON Principal OSCAR B. New among the instrumental music groups this year is the division of the band into two parts, Concert Band and Marching Band, and the addition of a Cadet Band under the direction of Mr. Carl Lindgren. Each of these groups has enjoyed rapid progress. The Concert Band and Orchestra both received first division ratings at the California School Band and Orchestra Festival held at Compton in April. Part of the success of these organizations has been due to the ensemble and solo work under the direction of Miss Dorothy Rankin. She also accompanies the Glee Clubs. Swing music by Jay Cox and his Blue Jays has played a large part in school assemblies. Row 5. R. Bahler, H. Patton, B. Wood, J. Amicitia, formed at Jordan in I939, was, in its inception, intended to become affiliated with the State Federation of World Friendship Clubs. Its purpose at Jordan was to stimulate local friendship. The Pacific Relations Club was formed in I936 as the Oriental Club. Its purpose was to further study of Pacific affairs and to promote understanding and friendship among the people of the Pacific. The Jordan World Friendship Society is to be the host school for the l943 May convention of the State Federation of World Friendship Clubs. At the Riverside convention held this spring, Dorothy King was elected State President, and Mae Van Etta, Program Vice President. The new library building, opened in September l94l, provides approximately three times the amount of space available in the old bungalow. The main reading room, annex, and browsing room will seat I3O pupils and house 9000 books. The student assistants have helped in arranging the materials and have aided the rest of the student body in becoming familiar with the new library quarters. Added space has greatly increased circulation of books, pamphlets, and magazines. Without the able assistance of the student staff the library could not function. This spring the Knights co-operated with the Student Court by upholding the school traditions and issuing citations to anyone who willfully disobeyed them. As a service club the Knights usher at assemblies, school programs, athletic contests, and serve as guides at important campus functions. The club is limited to twenty members from outstanding members ef the Boys' League. Requirements for membership are llA, l2B, or lZA standing, leadership qualities, and outstanding citizenship traits. The sponsor is Mr. Moore. BOOSTERS Attired in trim white uniforms with blue and white pom-poms, the Jordan High Boosters contributed much to the assemblies and a successful sport season. With pep and enthusiasm they performed on the field and in parades. The use of sparklers at night games was an outstanding feature in their activities. Booster Club is composed of outstanding girls who have earned at least four points by holding two different offices, have average standing in scholarship, and above average in citizenship. These girls not only function as a drill team but as a service club for the school. Among the social activities enjoyed were the semi-annual Installation Banquets, Senior Breakfasts, and Mothers' Day Tea. There were five returning Iettermen that formed the nucleus of the squad. Coached by R. M. Cline and headed by Captain Keith Whitey Anderson, our plunging fullback, the team was rugged and powerful, but it lacked the finesse that it takes to make championship status. They started the season with two defeats, one at the hands of Poly, a game that was won by a desperate pass in the last 30 seconds, 6-Og the other by a small fast Point Loma team, l4-7. The Jordan Varsity then snapped back to defeat l4-O the powerful Whittier team, which was last year's C.l.F. runner-up. Still displaying the same power, our team defeated Orange l4-O Then on the night of October 3l, Jordan gained wide recognition by playing in the so-called i'Fog Bowl game against Fullerton. Until the first half, when the game was called off because of a dense fog, we were leading 7-O. After the longest half period time in football history, which lasted until the following Monday afternoon, the Varsity came out on the wrong end of a l5-7 score. Following this, our Jordan team defeated l-luntington Beach l3-O, lost to Newport 6-O, lost to Anaheim 25-7, and wound up the season by defeating Excelsior, our traditional rival, 6-O. We finished third in League standing. B FOOTBALL Coached by Rocky Kemp and led by Captain Bill Smith, our powerful B team smashed its way to second place in the Sunset League. Starting the season with an impressive 7-O victory over Poly, we were defeated by Whittier l3-7, making it our first defeat since l938. Following this. we defeated Orange 25-O and lost to Fuller- ton l8-O. ln our next four games we defeated Huntington Beach l9-7, Newport 27-O, lost a close hard-fought game to Anaheim 26-25, and ended the season by defeating Excelsior l4-O. Jack Campbell, who was switched from end to quarterback in mid- season, and Captain Bill Smith were the two most outstanding players. KEITH WHITEY ANDERSON JERRY COLMAN JIM ROSSER Captain Fullback. Led by Captain Al Buckles, who was selected All-City and All-Huntington Beach Tournament forward, the team came out a close second in the Sunset League. Winning four games and losing two, these to Orange and Anaheim, the team was squeezed out of the semi-finals at the Huntington Beach Tournament in a hard fought battle. Our B's also had a brilliant season, taking second place in the Sunset League by winning tour and losing two games. In the Pomona Tournament we defeated Loyola 3-2, were eliminated by Pomona 5-4, and lost to both Poly and Wilson in the All-City Tournament. We lost ll games and won 9 to finish in the lower bracket of the Sunset League. Coached by lVlr. Reece, the team was sparked by the five returning lettermen: Captain Jim Flores, Jewell Jackson, Bob lVlacDonald, Frank Estes, and Ken Sherman. The leading sluggers were Captain Jim Flores, .362 average, with five 2 base hits and one 3 base hit: Ken Mapes with .3601 Ken Stone, 372, which included two 2 baggers and one home rung Jewell Jackson, 347, with two 2 baggers and one home run. The batteries were Stone and Estes, pitchers, and Jackson and Davis, catchers. Because of transportation difficulties our Junior Varsity team was forced to disband early in the season. Row I. This season's Varsity and B track teams, coached by Rocky Kemp, were power- ful and loaded with championship potentialities. Unfortunately, however, they were hampered by a lack of transportation facilities. Both teams emerged victorious in the Anaheim Novice Meet, and our Varsity, led by Captain Bill Hall, was undefeated in dual meetsg although they lost the All-City tilt to Poly and Wilson and finished fourth in the Sunset League finals. Orange and Anaheim bowed down 73 7,!l6 to 26 3,fl6, and 60 V2 to 43V2, respectively, and Leuzinger tied us 75-75. ln the B division we captured second place in the All-City Meet, and lost a close tilt to Leuzinger Sl V3 to 43V2. We then downed Orange 60h - 36V2 and Anaheim 63 - 23. The season wound up with a first Sunset League final's honor. Outstanding men on both squads were Captain Bill l-lall, star Varsity shotputter, Captain Leland Case, who took second place in the Southern California B pole vault: Boyd Likowski, Southern California B high jump champion. Ken Parlee, Don Walters, Bob Lally, Floyd Schwartz, and Ray Conklin were the high point men on both squads. Suffering discouraging defeats, our C team lost the Anaheim Novice Meet, the All-City Meet, and finished last in League standing. The victory of the season was chalked up against Anaheim, 60-40. Gordon Bousman, Jordan's star netter, concluded a brilliant season with an impressive victory over Excelsior's best. He won 5 out of 6 matches and took the runner's-up cup at the All-Sunset League Tourna- ment. Other singles men were Eddie Allen, Jack Hagthrop, and Captain Murray, whose loss in mid-season weakened the team. In the doubles division the first honors were closely contested between Adams and Davidson against Bates and King. We won from Orange I9-8, Huntington Beach I4-l3, and Excelsior I5-I2. The teams that defeated us were Anaheim, Newport l-larbor, and Fullerton. The graduating lettermen are Bousman, King, Murray, Bates and l-lagthrop.
