Remember the night of the sub-Siberian temperature last fall? The grandstands were overflowing with red-nosed, blanket-clad foot- ball enthusiasts. That was the night of the state quarter finals. Douglas versus St. Helens. That was the night you sat on your feet to keep them warm. But that night you didn't mind the weather so much because after the game was over, the clanging victory bell filled you with a pride that warmed even those frozen toes. A week later the story was different. That night the rain fell in discouraging torrents. But with that intense feeling of school spirit typical to Scotsmen, you braved the rain and croaked out words of encouragement to the muddy, but determined team. No victory bell sounded that night, no excited chatter echoed from the grandstands. Oh, the Demos seemed happy enough. But a strange silence en- veloped the rest of the crowd. We did our best, you thought. Maybe we'll take State next year. Anyway we're still the Metro League Champs. -l-his is football from the spectator's perspective. But, did you ever wonder about the players? What is so enticing -about being dragged through a lot of slush and mud? And what about basketball, baseball, wrestling and track? What, about athletics is so appealing that even endless hours of prac- tice provide no real discouragement to the true sportsman? Of what value are athletics to the athletes, to the school, to the student body? Besides the development of certain physi- cal skills, sports activities help develop charac- ter. The athlete must learn how to meet with both success and failure and how to remain cool and level-headed under pressure. Coach Osburn gives final instructions to the team before they go out to clobber the opponents. Athletic contests in various sports help gain recognition for the school and in such a way create interest in school affairs. Sports also play an important part in unit- ing the iunior and senior buildings of our school. The teams give each student body a common interest as well as promoting the feeling of school spirit. But, back to the first question. What is so enticing about being dragged through a lot of slush and mud? Perhaps a statement made by quarterback Terry DeSylvia concerning the unexpected success of the T959 football team will help to answer it. We have no stars, no heroes, he explained, only a group of boys who like to play the game. Everything that makes sports exciting and worthwhile is wrapped up in the word like. And now to our section to see what skill and that like have accomplished.
