The 1950-51 school year was the third year that the drivers' training program was in oper- ation in David City High School. Fifty-two drivers were trained. A total of 123 drivers were trained the first two years that the pro- gram operated. The two parts of the program are the class- room studies and the driving practice train- ing. Man and the Motor Car and the Drivers' Manual were the two books used in the classroom part of the program. Ellis Mercer and Iohn Tomek did an excellent job of managing the program. Mercer did the 3, . I k, Deeply interested in the explanation of the inter- nal combustion engine by Mr, Ellis Mercer, drivers' training instructor, are Verone Gibb and Marldecn Lanspa. Page 30 classroom work and Tomek had charge of driving practice as he has had the two pre- vious years. Nearly all of the 52 students who took the course were enrolled for credit. The drivers' training course has many aims in the program. To instill safety foremost in the student's mind is the most important aim. Three other aims are: ill To develop a social attitude toward driving, C21 To give a foundation for sound judgment on the part of the driver, and C31 To teach the student how to operate a car in a safe, scientific proven manner. The library now has 2,250 books. Three hundred and seventy-live of them have been added this year. The library is expanding and new shelves have been added to accom- modate the new books. Girls who donate their time to Work in the library are Martha Stara, Mary Kozisek, Mary Lou Polacek, Elva Davidson, Arlene Voboril, Pauline Birkel, Rosalie Zegers, Carole Sabata, Mary Ann Rerucha, Marcie Urbanovsky, Lib- bie Palik, Mary Ann Marushak, Connie Vot- ava, Maxine Klein and the girls in the fresh- man English class. The girls in the freshman English class are taking a course in library work so they can be of greater assistance in their following years of school. The librarians have different duties. Some of them check out books, some keep the shelves' in order, and others put the books away. The head librarian is La Donna Voboril and her assistant is lean Iuranek. Their duty is to number and check in every book and maga- zine before it is put in the library.
