He was one of the kindest, unselfish and spirited men this area has ever known. Mr. Lewis, known to everyone as Cappy, was well known throughout this area for his car and truck dealership. He was called Cappy the Truck King. He was a member of The United Commercial Travelers' Council No. 590; The Ohio Automobile Dealers' Asso. and The National Automobile Dealers' Asso. But he was known to others, especially those in scholastic sports, as a booster of local athletics. He was an energetic man who helped and advised all on how to excel in their own field of sports, especially track. The local youngsters came to know him well and love him for his coaching. He not only gave advice to youngsters in individual sports, but he also attended any and all sports events he could manage. Cappy was born May 8, 1911 and grew up in Lisbon. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Lisbon; the New Lisbon Lodge No. 65; F. and A. M.; Wilfred Clunk V. F. W. Post 4111; John J. Welsh American Legion Post 275; Eagles Aerie No. 2216, all of Lisbon, Ohio. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in WWII. Even with his long and hectic schedule in the center of this community, he still found enough time to give a local athlete advice and encouragement. You would always find him at a sports event in which the athlete that he gave advice to was in. So we, the Editors of the 1978 Olympian, would like to have the privilege to dedicate this yearbook to a great man-----Cappy Lewis. 4 This year, we are losing our superintendant of the Lisbon school system, Mr. Joseph W. Driscoll, after 30 years of service as as administrator. He has helped McKinley Elementary, Lincoln Junior High and David Ander- son Senior High schools through their times of need. He has been a hard work- ing man for the village of Lisbon. He attended high school in Leetonia and later went on to college at Youngs- town State University for a degree, B. S. in Education. He then went on to Kent State University for his Masters. He came to Lisbon after serving in the Crestview school district. He then became Superintendant of Lisbon's three schools in 1965. After twelve years of diligent work in Lisbon, he now resides in Salem, Ohio with his wife, Theresa. 5 TfieRre,: before The fire in our study hall and library was both a disas- ter and a blessing in disguise. It was a disaster because we lost the student's most important resource — the library along with the A. V. equipment, study hall tables and chairs. But the worst part, still, is that the Art Club's time and effort were wasted by decorating the walls with murals of the school. But yet it was a bless- ing because the students and administration real- ized how important the school is to them. Before the fire we took it for granted and now after ... we think of it more than we ever did. SENIOR DAY: REFLECTING ON THE PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE 34 Senior Day was held in the gym on Friday, June 2, 1978 at 1:00 p. m. The day is used for honoring the Sen- iors and handing out awards to those who did something special. The Processional, Pomp and Circumstance, was played by Carter Beck. The program began as the Seniors sat down and the Senior address was given by Class President Tim Steitz. The gold cards were given out first as the presentations started. Following, the re- mainder of the awards were handed out. A small group of Seniors sang the class song and Gerri Bosworth read the class poem. Afterwards, the Student's Voice Opinion Poll was pre- sented with everyone anx- iously waiting for who won what. With all the cameras flashing, awards and gifts giving to students, faculty and advisors, the day was soon over. Mr. Blackburn dismissed the Seniors, and shouts and ballyhoos were heard as they walked through the doors. All in all, the day was a success. It was cheerful and sad - the last day for all the Seniors to be in the High School together. 35 Senior Day: Honoring The Grads Class Poem A POEM OF TRUTH It seems like only yesterday when we opened our first book. To each learn a talent on the different roads we took. For tomorrow is here, and now that it's time to go. To walk our separate ways, and use the knowledge we know. Although the time was short, the memory will be long. We can never forget the people who taught us right from wrong. « Whether teachers, parents or enemies, just friends all the same, A lesson worth remembering, that we all have a name. And some ot us will go and use our heads, and some our hands. But we all have a committment, we'll do the best we can. 'Cause good grades or bad, we all have an art. That whatever we do in the future, it will always follow from the heart. But I know of a committment that still lingers on and on. That the spirit of accomplishment will never be gone. 'Cause we are what we are, that’s why we're so great. There's no better word to describe the class o '78'!!! By Gerri Bosworth Class Song DREAM A DREAM Day has gone by, homework's due tomorrow, being done at ten under a small dim light. Test has come, passed it free and easy, now I'm going to a party Friday night. Ne'er forget the things that we do while in school that makes us smile; And the fun that we make our own can stay with us a- while. Dream a dream, of the friends we'll long to see; Dream a dream, of the day when we will be together. Trav’ling on, to a new tomorrow, we'll leave our friends and go our separate ways. Going on, to a new tomorrow, when we laugh and cry about the old school days. Say goodbye, to our friends, who we knew and have traveled on to their own separate ways. If we all will dare to dream dreams of diat time we had back then; Then we'll see that we are still friends whom we yearn to see again. Dream a dream, of the friends we'll long to see; Dream a dream, of the day when we will all be together. School days gone, time flew by so quickly, now we have to part and say goodbye to all. 36 By Alan McCord SENIOR DAY AWARDS Gold Cords, Top 10 Honor Students: Mike Buckley Tom Rudibaugh Debbie Hurd Alan McCord Melanie Gottberg Margaret Schweitzer Tim Adams Lori Lewis Sue Emerson . A. H. S. was held at the War Memorial Stadium on Sunday, June 4, 1978 at 3:00 p. m. The Seniors started arriving at the stadium around quarter after two, each being very ex- cited about the upcoming gradu- ation. You witnessed fellow grads adjusting pinning the caps on one another. The slight wind in the air overcame the warm sun to keep everyone cool; but it presented a few problems when the gowns tossed and a few caps were blown off. But inspite of a few mishappenings, the Seniors got in line to start the proces- sional, and the graduating cere- monies began. The 1978 Senior class pro- ceeded from the endpost to their chairs as the band played Pomp and Circumstance. ” The welcome was given by class president Tim Steitz; then Rev. Daniel Frost gave his baccalaureate address. Valedictorian Mike Buckley and Salutatorian Tom Rudibaugh delivered their addresses next. After these speeches, Joe W. Driscoll made a short speech about the 1978 graduating class and then turned the program over to to Mr. Blackburn. After the presentation of the class by Mr. Blackburn, Mr. Driscoll distributed the diplomas to everyone. Cameras flashed and shouts were heard as each was awarded their long-awaited diplomas. The benediction fol- lowed and all the Seniors threw their caps up, acknowledging their graduation. 41 MISS OLYMPIAN The Student Council this year chose MELANIE GOTTBERG as Miss Olympian. RETIRING TEACHERS BERNICE ROBB Mrs. Bernice Robb has been a teach- er here at David Anderson High School for many years. She has been a great teacher as well as being a good friend. She was always willing to lend a help- ing hand to anyone. She is very involved with the stu- dents and has taught commercial class- es, such as typing and shorthand. We would like to show our thanks to Mrs. Robb by wishing all the best of luck in the future. JACK HERROD Mr. Jack Herrod has been a teacher at D.A.H.S. for numerous years. He has been an understanding teacher as well as being a helping and caring per- son. He was always seen about the halls talking with students and fellow teachers. He has taught Earth Science and Biology. He also put a lot of hard work and effort by being the advisor of the Science Club where he has speakers come in and talk or he takes some stu- dents on field trips. We would like to express our thanks to Mr. Herrod and wish him all the happiness in the future. J.V.S.: School For Specialized Work SHOINQf i WAITING FOR THE FUTURE Junior - definition: a student in his next-to-last year before graduating from school; and knowing a lot of juniors here, they're all looking forward to next year and graduation. Being in the third year of school- ing, D. A.H.S. has become a sort of a second home to them. With knowing where everything is, everyone is very happy. Some are hap- py here and some are hap- py with their first year at the JVS. They have receiv- ed their class rings the year before - and so, the juniors must be happy. In the junior year, they can, again, be in any club or sport, whichever they pre- fer the most. One junior can have the honor of be- coming the Homecoming Queen as another one is chosen as the Junior Home- coming Attendant. Juniors can become biology lab assistants, also. One is chosen as the most depend- able junior on Senior Day and others can win numer- ous other awards. Another type of award is for two juniors to be escorts for the Seniors on Senior Day and Graduation. But per- haps the most special time for a junior is the Prom. The Prom takes weeks and weeks of hard work to make it happen. From bake sales to car washes - all are important, Many can be on the Prom Committee. But maybe the highest of all honors would be to serve on the Prom Court or be the Prom King or Queen. After the Prom, juniors look towards the future-their Senior year and graduation. So, to the juniors, we'd like to offer some advice. Wait, be pa- tient for that Senior year to come. Don't be afraid to live it as you feel like living it. It'll be your last year - so make it as good as you possibly can. LAST DAY OF SCHOOL 53 DECIDING ABOUT THE FUTURE Sophomore - definition: a student in his second year of schooling, and D. A. H. S. has over one hundred of them. After the first year in high school, the sopho- mores feel a little better about classes. Some may still be afraid, but most are right at home in high school. The hall ways and doors turn into rooms and classes, so everyone knows where everything is, hope- fully. During the sophomore year, they can be in any club or sport in school. Sophomores can be induct- ed into the French Club by doing skits in front of other club members. One sophomore is chosen as a Homecoming attendant. One is chosen as the wit- tiest sophomore on Senior Day, along with other a- wards such as perfect attendance, Americanism and Government, Baldwin Wallace; among others. This year, the sophomores participated in the Rock- a-thon and other money raising projects. The sec- ond year is a sort of a turn- ing point for the sophomores. for it's the year they make up their minds to either go on through high school or go to the Vocational School. Sophomores realize they only have two more years, so they can't wait to go on. So, to the sopho- more class, we'd like to offer patience in every- thing you do. Keep up the good work, and you'll go further than a second year in high school. Treat oth- ers as they would treat you. Be kind and well- meaning. Good luck in all the years you have ahead of yourselves. DEATH CARD 61 FRESHMEN LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Freshmen - definition: a student in his first year, a newcomer. Well, that is exactly what the fresh- men are here in D. A. H.S. - newcomers from Lincoln School trying to start a new step in their lives a- head. Most are willing and waiting to get to the high school; but when they come, some aren't as sure as before. Suddenly they're put into an atmosphere of hallways and doors where any class can be. Some may feel at home, some may be adventurous, some may be afraid and some may not even care. But even with all the things ' lB|B that can happen, there are some good times. They can be in most any club in the high school. Freshman B can participate as French Bpf Banquet servers. One freshman is chosen for Homecoming Attendant. Six girls are chosen as ' . cheerleaders. Also with that, one is chosen by the school as friendliest fresh- —— man on Senior Day. They also can receive awards year, the freshmen took for perfect attendance. This part in Lisbon's birthday by rocking chairs down at McKinley School. They al- so had a sock hop to raise money. The first year is always a busy one and the years ahead may be easier or harder whichever the students make it. So, to all those girls and boys in the freshman class, we would like to wish the best I—. luck in the years ahead in S' S t ie high school. This year, they have done many things, including the clean-up of the fire. One teacher is even taking a group of eight juniors and a senior to France. Bonne chance sur votre voyage en France. So, again, they are very busy. Maybe so busy that they may have to use that good ole piece of wood called the paddle, where all the receivers can engrave their names. So, teachers, keep your heads on and don't get too mad too many times. The students are only human. here a few years, some many years and some are retiring after years and years of good, hard work. All in all, the students look up to the teachers and trust them for advice. Students even consult each other. (That's how confused they are). The teachers here do many things such as give guidance; take stu- dents on field trips; pose as chaperones for the Homecoming, Snowball and Prom dances; sign up as advisors for different clubs and groups; become the coaches for the many different sports and help students during lunch and after school with their Faculty - definition: the department of instruction in a school or college. The D. A. H. S. faculty is made up of a principal, secre- taries, guidance counsel- ors, directors, teachers, student teachers, librarians and janitors. Each has their own job to do and between them all, they get the job done. Some of the teachers have returned to teach at D. Golf Coach BEFORE AND AFTER ORGANIZATIONS STUDENT ACTIVITIES Organization - defini- tion: such a body with other groups directed and super- vised by it. In the high school, there are approxi- mately twenty-five groups, ranging from making mu- sic and playing in parades to helping around the vil- lage of Lisbon, cleaning up with other groups from the area. Band and Chorus perform halftime shows for football and basketball games and give Christmas Spring concerts. Some groups help the school out by doing jobs for it such as the AV Crew, Gym, Library and Office Assis- tants. One group help out in their own class-the Biology Lab Assistants. There are organizations that stem from their own classes such as the French, Science, Home Ec and Art Clubs. Some help out with the community - the Key Club and Nike Club. A couple of organizations in- form the students of the activities and sports of the school such as the Students Voice and the Olympian. Some groups are just a- ward-winning - the Nation- al Honor Society. Quite a few of the groups help the high school and other places such as Student Council, Future Nurses and Tutors. Then there are groups which raise money and spend it on some things such as Y-Teens and their big Snowball Dance. Most anyone can join any organ- izations, but most have stipulations to follow such as pay dues, be at meetings, etc. So, as many can see, D. A. H. S. has many clubs to choose from and any student can have his own choice. 1977-78 MARCHING BAND SENIORS: FIRST ROW: Belinda Hillyer, Margaret Schweitzer, Beth Everett, Char- lotte Reinke; SECOND ROW: Diana Cope, Teresa Sneddon, Teresa Smith, Sharon Stanley, Karen Halverstadt, Melanie Gottberg; THIRD ROW: Alan McCord, Greg Haren, Tim Adams. In the high school, there are many forms that this physical activity and pleasure show up in. The sports start at the beginning of the school year with four different sports taking place at one time. The first is football. Many join the football team, and for the past few years, they have turned in great seasons. Of course, there is varsity, reserve and freshman football. Al- so, there is the golf team which has many meets dur- ing its season. Golf has the smallest team at D.A. H.S. The next smal- lest team would be the cross country team which has upheld the highest stand- ards in the several past years. The last fall sport is girls volleyball, reserve and varsity. The winter sport is basketball, and there's all kinds. There's boys freshmen, reserve and varsity along with girls reserve and varsity. After the basketball season is over, it's not long after- wards that boys and girls track starts for its spring season. There's also some summer sports such as baseball, softball and swim- ming in which some of the D.A.H.S. students partici- pate in. Even though each sport uses a different look- ing ball, they all have that one thing in common - practice. Every team must practice weeks and weeks prior to its own season to be up to their full potential. So, as dedicated as each team is, they all are part of a strong sports program here at David Anderson High School. There's the Booster Club which helps anything dealing with the high school. There are banks, and large and small grocery stores used for everybody's needs. Davis Studios also advertise be- cause he is the school photographer. There are many car companies from around the area who ad- vertise for business. There are mining companies, pipe companies, feed com- panies and trucking com- panies - many types for all sorts of people. There are small food businesses such as CEA's, Pine Tree Inn, Ivystone and Buckeye Beverage. There are drug stores and hardware stores, furniture stores and cloth- ing stores. Some adver- tisers are realtors, and some deal with all parts of the car. A few are bar- ber shops and a few are 'Dairy Queen' stores. And of course you can't forget the beauty salons and green- houses, lawyers and doc- tors, and last but not least a few politicians. All in all, the advertisements are one of the most important parts of the annual. Advertisements - def- inition: the act or process of announcing publicly especially by a printed notice or a broadcast and arousing a desire to buy or patronize. And by ad- vertisements, the yearbook gets publisited. The adver- tisers in and around Lisbon take out sections in the back of the Olympian in order to advertise their products and store goods and they also pay a large part of the Olympian year- i)ook costs. But the adver- tisers do not need to be from Lisbon. Many come ' Siva IVSSJ, w r M r L r r r® H r tm r r M r r THE FIRESTONE BANK TpI- ?.
