In the spring you'll be proud of your little tomboy, Gertie. I'm going to college to do my best and make people know that a person can be named Jones and yet be somebody? This promise Gertrude Gather Jones made to to her mother when she boarded the train for Kinsington University. Gertie's family con- sisted of her mother and herself. Her mother in her young days, had belonged to the first family of the first town in the first county of North Carolina. But when this first girl fell in love she fell out of the lap of luxury into the scramble of poverty. Mr. jones had been a clerk in one of her father's clothing stores and, because he was so extremely fascinating, the belle of the town had immediately prom- ised to marry him on the condition that he live up to his ambitions and promises, which he never did. So to-day, after many years of planning and scrimping and sewing, Mrs. jones had saved enough to send Gertie to college. When Gertrude reached Kinsington and saw her room-mate she was quite 'itaken back. There stood a girl that might have been a mannequin. so far as clothes were concerned. She was perfectly dressed from the crown of her head to the soles of her expensive looking lizard skin shoes. On the bed lay a squirrel coat fQuite out of season, Gertie thought, even though she did not know what perfectly chic looking school girls wore.j. Gertie smiled and extended her hand. My names Gertrude Gather Jones. I suppose you are my room-mate. If you are, you may call me 'Gertief All my best friends dofl t'Yes, I suppose I'm your room-mate, Ger- trude, and Gertrude's room-mate left the room. Gertrude smiled, plumped her hat-box down on the bed and began rambling through it for a dress. It was twelve o'clock when her room mate returned. just as Gertrude was crawling into bed Rosamond came in, flung her hat on the bed, and seated herself on the edge of her trunk. Darn itl This is the rottenest hole Ilve hit. If it wasnit for a darling boy I met while ago, I'd go straight back to Halifax. t'Who is the boy? I'm all ears, Gertie demanded. f'O'h, he's supposed to be the biggest boy on the campus. He's Gary Charles, son of the man who gave the money for the school of aviation, et cetera. Good looking? Oh, boy! 7' 'lHush, don't tell me any more. I'm up here determined to study and I positively wonlt be tempted thusfl t'Huh, I'm supposed to be here for that, too, but gosh! a girl's got to have some fun. I'll tell you something if you won't tell it. Ma was about not to send me because she could not give me all the clothes I wanted be- cause I always swore to her that if she wanted me to go to college she'd have to let me have loads of cute clothes. Well, I got a job peeling potatoes in the kitchen when they need me. I can make enough like this to pay for my clothes. Don't, for heaven's sake, tell it. But its either peel spuds or wear shabby clothes for this lady. My goodness! is it so outrageous to peel too, spuds? Why I've got a job like that, only I'm peeling them to pay for books and tuition. Gertie had not many days to stay on the campus to see that Rose knew what she was was talking about, so far as Gary Charles concerned. Surely he was all one boy could beg president of his society, a member of the best fraternity, the real star on the football team, and the best aviator in the school of Page Forty-Two Hilltop Echoes I 'xx Ji' I I if y ,.,, 'v II' Q ., . It seemed that everywhere people were calling for or asking about Gary. Yet she had not seen him. From what she had heard Rose say of him, though, she felt that she would recognize him the minute she saw him: deep blue eyes, sandy hair, tall, clear cut, strong and silent.. Then one day, quite by accident, she met him. She and Rose were coming from the usual half-hour of spud-peeling before lunch when Gary overtook them. Rose, who always carried a nail file, compact and comb with her to the kitchen, was looking quite as fresh as when she had left the dormitory. Even though Gertie had rushed from a class straight to the kitchen, she was almost as goodlooking as Rose. Hers was a complexion that only has to be powdered once or twice a day to always look at its best, and her hair, when she gave it a chance, curled in endless little waves all over her head. f'Gary, this is my room mate, Miss Jones, Rose introduced her. . Gary took Gertie's extended hand and held it so long that when they both came to all three of them were quite embarassed. 'fAre you girls going out for track? he asked as they walked on. No, I don't think I shall. I think run- ning and jumping is so unladylike. I'm so glad that at home mother always made my nurse see that I did not become a tomboyf' Rose answered. ffAnd you, Miss Jones? Yes, I think I shall. It may be tomboy- ish and all that, but I love to run. I know I need never even hope to win but I'm going out for it just because I love it. When they reached the dormitory and Gary left them, Rose turned to Gertie. Of all the dumb idiots I've ever seen, you are the dumbest. Haven't you got any sense at all about men? Not much. Why? Don't you know that above all things Gary hates a tomboy-all men of his type do. Rose, I fairly believe you think I was try- Page Forty- Three T ing to vamp Gary Charles. Well, I wasn't. I just told him the truth, and the truth is accepted in Heavenf' t'Maybe so in Heaven, but not by men. I 'spose you'd even tell him that you peeled potatoes to pay your tuition. Of course I wolud if he asked me. It's nothing to be ashamed of. When the time came for practice both girls went out for the track team. Gertie practiced faithfully and was soon the best runner on the team. When the day for the track meet came, she was placed at the head of her team. Apparently, with all ease, she got her team in line. When the whistle blew they were all in perfect condition. Gary, as one of the time-keepers, was in a position to get a close-up of her. In the short gym suit she was beautiful. Her body was well-rounded and well proportioned. Ev- ery movement was free and easy. Rose, who sat by him, wondered rather indignantly, why he thought Gertie so interest- ing when he wasnt the type to admire tom- boys. At the close of the race, Gertrude had won. Gary was one of the first to congratulate her. Indeed. he quite forgot that at that moment lie had an engagement with Miss Rosamond Parrish. When the cheering and congratu- lating was over Gary walked with Gertie to her dormitory and as he left he gave her the amazing information that he would see her at eight o'clock. Eight o'clock came, and with it came Gary with an offering of American Beauties. This story might have ended here by merely saying and they lived happily ever after if it had not been for Rose. just as Gary would make up his mind that Gertie was the girl, along would come dear, sweet little Rose, and his dreams of Gertie would tumble. One morning toward the end of school, a crowd of them were to go to the top of the nearest mountain to see the sun rise. To do this meant rising at four o'clock and hiking to the top of the mountain. Gary asked both girls to go with him. Gertie yawned, stretched and got up. 'When she reached the campus there stood Gary. tall, blond, and smiling. Together they walked through the semi-darkness up to the top of the mountain. 'When they reached the top everything was midnight blue and hazy. They had been there only a few minutes when there appeared in the east a faint pinkish glow. This deepened and became wider toward the west: there also appeared a faint golden glow, lightly covering the blue. Slowly, one by one, the stars were receding. The pink in the east and the gold of the western sky were each reaching out as if to touch the other. The expanse of the sky between them was becoming blue and lighter As they watched, the colors slowly came together, covering the blue and making a per- fect lavender curtain. Then, at the very top of the next mountain-almost on it, it seemed -there appeared a most golden gold. It rose higher and higher, changing the whole sky of lavender and blue to one huge opal. As the gold widened, fleecy white clouds appeared. Finally there was no pink and blue. just gold. The treetops were gold, the mountains were gold, all the world was gold! Gertie reached out her hand to Gary's and held it hard. The golden veil was parting in the middle. Here and there around the edge appeared streaks of blue: wider and wider apart the curtain was drawn, and they saw the white, snowy clouds Hoat past in a sea of blue. At the bottom of the sea. close to the earth, a huge golden ball came up from out the Ufath- omless depths and climbed over the top of the mountain. just as it reached the top it paused a moment, a grand glorious ball of tire. making the whole world recognize it as king of the day. Then, with pompous, smil- ing dignity it proceeded up thru the sea of blue. Spellbound, the gazers sat for a moment, neither daring to break the silence. In just a minute a tiny grey squirrel skitted across a dry twig. It cracked. The spell was brok- en. They rose in silence and started back down the mountain. Gary looked at Gertie and what he saw in her eyes made him take her hand a little tighter and realize that, for better or worse. he'd rather have the tom- boy and the sunrise than the Alice-sit-by-they tire and a book.
