CLASS HI TORY In the fall of 1942 twenty eager first graders entered the front doors of the Darlington School, ready for the beginning of the long struggle toward education. Of the twenty who started together only seven are here to see the journey ended. Those seven are: Marilyn Valentine, Betty Anderson, Marilyn Brown, Tom Surface, Terry Holt, David Goldsby, and Harold Robinson. The first six years were spent gathering knowledge which, we were told, would be necessary to us when we reached high school, and looking at the stairway enviously, waiting for the wonderful day to come when we could ascend it into junior high school. When that day finally came, we climbed the stairs with a cheerful outlook, only to find that all was not as rosy as we had pictured it. We were lost at first, and then found that we were what was considered by the upper classmen, "unnecessary evils". Our entrance into high school as Freshmen proved to be one which we would never forget. We chose Mrs. Surface as our sponsor, and started the year out with a bang by being initiated! We enjoyed two class parties and sponsored a chicken supper and square dance to begin our class funds. We were proud to contribute Tom Cain, Gene Tribbett, and Terry Holt to the basketball team. Our Sophomore year was an exciting one for us. We acquired our grey and green class sweaters. Mrs. Surface was our sponsor again and we enjoyed a nice Christmas party at her house. Again we sponsored a chicken supper and square dance. Tom, Terry, and Gene again represented us on the basketball team. We began our junior year by receiving our class rings and conducting a very successful magazine sale. Mr. Irwin and Mrs. Surface were elected our sponsors. In the fall we held a chili supper and square dance. Our play, "Professor, How Could You", was one of the best ever presented at D. H. S. Tom, Gene, and Terry were again on the baseball, basketball, and track teams. We cheered them on to victory in the county basketball tourney. The highlight of our year was our beautiful Mardi Gras Prom in honor of the Seniors. In this our Senior year, we have looked eagerly toward graduation. We chose Mr. Gibbs and Mr. Bowerman as sponsors. Early this year we had our pictures taken at the Smith Studio in Attica. We have worked hard to make our "Chief" one of the best annuals yet put out by the Seniors. This year we were proud of Terry, Tom, and Gene who were again on the baseball, basketball, and track teams. We were also proud of Nancy Timmons, Janice Conner, and Marilyn Valentine who have been excep- tionally good cheerleaders. Our Senior play, "A Case of Springtime was given March 31. Baccalau- reate services were held on May l and Commencement on May 2. On May 8 we left Darlington on our never-to-be-forgotten Senior trip through Washington D. C. and New York. So ended our days at D. H. S. We know that no matter how far we may roam, we shall always re- member the happy days spent at Darlington High School.

PROPHECY We had just settled down to what was going to be a very peaceful evening. The books fsomething about a Corpse for Christmas and Fools Die on Sundayj lay invitingly near on the table. It was going to be a perfect evening but - the telephone rang! Answering the telephone with very poor grace, the voice that replied was a very cheerful, "Hi there. The most thrilling thing has happened! " Uttering unspeakable things and wondering drearily why two sets of twins hadn't suppressed Jan's natural energy. Even changing her name couldn't hold a Conner down, "What's the matter? Did Suds Junior break another arm?" There was a disgusted snort at the far end of the line. "No, Betty Jean's asked the class of '55 over tonight and you are both to be sure to come." Why in the world? Betty Jean? Then the light dawned. "Betty Jean Anderson. Count on usl We'll be there!" "The same but the name happens to be Cain" , Janice murmured in her pleasant voice. "Where have you been these last ten years?" Giving the address and at the same time inquiring, "What time?" "Come after me about eight-thirty. I'll expect you at nine. Bye byel " She's always being clever. Nine o'clock found us in front of the Cain residence. The butler fTom owns a chain of creameries and dairy farms and are they in the money? opened the door and Betty Jean greeted us. Right away she began relating to us how old classmates had fared in years since graduation. She told us that Butch was working on the McClellan trial and couldn't get away. He had become a famous criminal lawyer. Gene Tribbett, who is at the party, tried to be a top star in Hollywood playing romantic roles but ended up producing squeaks for Mickey Mouse at SI0.000 a month. Tom Surface is busy now designing sport cars for European royalties. Dave Goldsby couldn't make it to the party tonight because had a television performance. He has become the North's Tennessee Ernie. Just then Nancy recognized us and came over to talk to us. She told us that she was a very private, private secretary for McBee's Electricity Inc. "What's Betty Jean been telling you?" she asked. About the class mostly," we replied. "Can you add anything?" "We11, let's see. You remember Janie Valentine, don't you?" "Of course, she started her own orchestra, didn't she?" "Yes, they're all girls and they play jazzed up highbrow that's really attracting public interest. Then there's Bob White. He has made a name of being the most hellish hell-driver in the country. Terry Holt is a famous divorce lawyer and has also won first place in the loo yard dash for the U, S. in recent Olympic games. He got Bob's wife a divorce last month. She said Bob was too fast." "Marilyn Brown is here at the party too. She tried Metropolitan but decided she was better fitted to singing totchy blues in a night club." Nancy asked us to come into the other room and have Marilyn sing one of her famous numbers for us. As we joined the others in the next room, we knew we would once again talk and have fun with our old school pals of '55,
