In June of 1972 We had just completed our junior year and were preparing to relax and enjoy a leisurely summer before coming back for our senior year. For many of us, however, these plans were not to materialize as expected. They were disrupted by a young lady who blew into town and acted very unladylike indeed. We heard she was coming, but even so, we could not prepare for her. Weill remember her for a long time, her name was: AGNES The band was without uniforms The High School was surrounded with water f -- u ,.,,, V W . , , 4 gl i L - ' L . In and around the high school, the scene was staggering, and the smell was pungent. Almost immediately the herculean task of restoration was begun. P vi ,35- 'il 'fi a V 1.'lK-Ulf., V 'mv 'Q js. V . We did manage to begin at the appointed time. Students, teachers and all others concerned worked under certain adversities, as shown below, but in the end, a spirit of cooperation and willingness to endure hardship brought us rewards which will never be known to any other than the class of 73 . We went without a gym until January. At this writing, the library was still unavailable for use. HISTORIC REFLECTIONS lt's sad to think how dreams dissolve When high school days are done, You'll wonder twenty years from now Did I have all that fun? But in the hopes of yesteryear, We've seen our dreams come true. Memories good and bad appear. Regrets are only few. We suffered quite a lack of funds Which surely you should know. Subs and sweets were our entreats To make up heaps of dough. Mac Arthur's Park was quite the scene We worked for many hoursg Robed in darkness, decked in green, Bathed in moonlit flowers. Then came the time for Senior Sales, We didn't win our race. But proved that nice guys finish lastg To lose is no disgrace. 1 And when the flood came Funds grew fewer Our halls were decked With essence of sewer. We know how it is to lose someone too. We dedicate this stanza, Mr. Hower, to you. A man whom we thank for many a thing Whose soul was the heart of our class beginning. Every age has it's good times To be lived by you. May it's good times be many And it's bad times be few. You'll be thinking about the times you've spent In this house of brick and cement Wondering about your flurry to flee Awaiting reunions of seventy-three . Love and Laughs, Pam Fryling, Historian P.S. Mr. Angelo, we regret to say Unfortunately until this day Your purple shirt and tie, unfound Must be wandering about the town. 22 Debra Ann Adams Deb Drink freely from the brew of life and experience its blithe sensations? Much of the success of our program is due to the insistance on excellence by the man upon whose shoulders the respon- sibility for our program lies, Mr. John Maturani, our Athletic Director. For the past fourteen years Mr. Maturani has managed to maintain its respectability in these times of rapidly changing values and attitudes. His task is an awesome one, carrying with it the responsibility of assuring adequate financing for athletics, coordinating the schedules of the many programs, contracting officials, and acting as liaison between the community, the school, and the coaching staff plus many other responsibilities too numerous to mention. In addition to being Athletic Director Mr. Maturani teaches Driver Education at Danville High School. Every athlete who participates in our sports program, every student who takes pride in our athletic accomplishments, and every spectator who enjoys attending D.H.S. contests owes a debt of gratitude to our dedicated Athletic Director, Mr. John Maturani. rlL,E:,'1i'Lh T l -x : ' .f:53E'1f'J!5-'li'?l'. IRONMEN GRIDMEN LOG Mf-WOW EVEN SEASON A fantastic grand opening and a spirited finish were the highlights of the 1972 football season at Danville High School. This season, as most seasons, had its ups and its downs-its triumphs and its blemishes, its elation and its disappointments, but always there was action. Preseason play saw Danville perform Well in scrimages against Mt. Carmel and Shenandoah, but no one, not even the Danville fans, was expecting the wild and wonderful events which would mark the seasons opening games. An ancient foe, Shikellamy, proved to be our first test. Playing our home opener at Bucknell stadium the mighty lronmen scored the first time they touched leather as Billy Wolff took the opening kickoff and cascaded up the right sideline for a touchdown. Thus was the stage set for the big 24-6 win over the Shikellamy Braves. Some critics remained unconvinced until the lronmen traveled to Shamokin and scalped the Indians by a 12-7 margin. People finally realized that Danville was, at that point, a bonafied title contender. A disappointing night at Berwick, which overwhelmed the Ironrnen 38-8, was quickly offset by victories over division foes from Northwest and Southern both of which yielded 32 points to the lronmen in 32-8 and 32-14 skirmishes. The spark which had originally ignited the lronmen seemed to llicker momentarily as we fell prey first to an upset minded Milton 24-14, then saw an 8-8 ballgame slip away from us in the last 10 seconds at Central as the Blue Jays scored a 15-8 win, and then as we lost to an aroused Hazelton 17-8. Shades of glory returned in our last two games however as we pushed the eventual B champion Bloomsburg to the limit before dropping a 32-30 game and then turned back the 1971 defending champion Seals of Selinsgrove by a decisive 24-8 count in the seasons finale. A big factor in the mid-season lag was undoubtedly caused by the fact that all our home games were played away due to the damage left at I-QQ. Hartman Field by Hurricane Agnes. The 1973 season will find the lronmen gridmen back on home turf with a solid core of returning letterinen anxious for another shot at championship honors in the Susquehanna Valley. Mention must here be made and credit given to those boys who played out their senior year for the lronmen. They include Todd Jeffreys, Keith Hackenburg, Jim Connolley, Ralph Dailey, Don Brady, Chuck Thomas, and Bill Wolff, who were aided by the fine efforts of Jeff Lemon, Bob Faust, Tom Cahill, Mike Wydra, and Tim Keefer. Coach Walter Whitey McCloskey's fightin' Ironmen posted a 15-8 record and made their twelfth trip to a post-season tournament since occupying the present high school in 1958. But the Ironmen might have done better had it not been for under par foul shooting and for hurricane Agnes which deprived them of their floor for better than half the season. DHS' basketball fate at the onset of the season was so uncertain that some closeup observers feared the Orange and Purple might be in for their first SVC second division finish in 18 years. With the graduation of ll outstanding seniors the Ironmen faced a tremendous challenge in defense of their SVC and PIAA, District 4, Class A, championships. There were no predictions of great success when coach McCloskey and assistant Dan Fegley talked about their hoopball magicians They had but two experienced hands, captain Gary Reichard and associate captain Randy Sidler, available as the team embarked on the new campaign. The coaches were faced with the necessity of dipping into untested personnel for regular duty. We have some raw talent on this squad, McCloskey said before the season started, but it is by far the most inexperienced Danville team we've had for quite a spell. Reflecting a little on some of the events and happenings which made a mark on the team's showing during the year, there was the bad mixed with the good. Perhaps the biggest catastrophe was the disasterous flooding which occurred early the morning of June 22 and with it the loss ofthe DHS gym floor. As a result Ironmen cagers were forced to practice on foreign courts the initial two months of the season. The globetrottin' Orange and Purple basketeers had to fit their practice schedules around the programs of the Danville State Hospital, Bloomsburg State College and Bloomsburg High School. The first ten games of the season were played on opponent's hardwoods. It wasn't until Monday, January 8 that the Ironmen were able to conduct a practice session on the newly completed home boards. The following night in its home debut the O 8a P lost to Northwest 57-50. Official dedication of the renovated gym took place on Friday, Feburary 16. A gala ceremony was conducted following the DHS - Selinsgrove junior varsity game. The honorable Daniel J. Flood, 11th district, Pennsylvania, Congress of the United States, House of Representatives, was the principal speaker. Also present were State Senator Franklin L. Kury, and our own George O. Wagner, Pennsylvania House of Representatives member, and an ex-Ironmen eager. Anyone who has played the rough-and-tumble kid game of King of the Hill can appreciate the position in which the Ironmen found themselves in defending their SVC and PIAA, District 4, ClassA titles. Every team in the conference went all out to knock the Ironmen off their perch. Rivals had reason to believe they might get a little respite this season. After all, the Ironmen, lost four starters from last year's title-winning team, and this would have to be regarded as pretty much of a rebuilding year. Well, it didn't work out that way. The Ironmen were not in their customary position in first place, but they did on defense. 1-L, Tip it, tip it our way! win 15 of 23 games, a very respectable mark by comparison with hundreds of other schools. The smooth transition can be credited to the leadership qualities of the two key returnees Reichard and Sidler. Reichard, 5-10, was the team's stabilizer. He directed the offense, scored clutch baskets and played relentlessly Sidler, a 6-3 forward, tore up things around the basket and was the team's top rebounder. Despite the new faces in the lineup the Ironmen looked pretty much like past editions. They liked to get the ball inside, hit the boards hard, and employed an overplay type of gambling defense. The Orange and Purple showed they could play good defensive ball. Their losses revealed they outscored their opponents from the field. Poor foul shooting and the lack of experience were factors in their defeats. Without a doubt the highlight of the season came in a February tilt at home with eventual SVC and District 4, Class A champion, Shamokin. The Indians unbeaten and favored by as many as 20 points were unable to cope with the not-to-be denied Ironmen who eked outa 50-48 decision. It was the Indians' lone setback of the regular season. Danville finished third in the overall SVC standings and qualified for the PIAA, District 4, Class A playoffs losing to Shamokin, 62-55, in a semi-final tilt at Berwick. That closed the Ironmen out for the season - but no sniffles, no regrets, no if we had only . . . No sir, none of that. lt was a splendiferous season for a bunch of guys who responded to adversity with as much heart as anyone who ever wore the Orange and Purple. Great players as well as teams have marked Danville's basketball history. Making their mark on the Ironmen honor roll were seniors Reichard, Marvin Brecht, Jim Hall, Bill Wolff, Jerry Davis, Jeff Eister, Tom Kurtz, Joe Gross, Dennis Cronomiz, Doug Cropf, Dave Evans, Mike Wagner. Add to the list underclassmen who will carry the banner for DHS next year, Sidler, Rick Morris, Kevin Lydcn, Drew Burgess, Tim McCloskey, Joe Mazol, Randy Gresh, Bill Driscoll, Tom Little. With a year's experience under their belts the 1973-74 edition of the Ironmen should be more capable of reducing those mechanical errors which plagued the team this season. How far the Ironmen next year can go will depend on how far they want to go. The capability of a good season is present, but we aren't about to make any rash predictions for the schedule doesn't permit us to expect that much. Stop making with the ballet I asked for rain, not a basketball. Look out . . . the north wall is falling on us. and get me off the floor. At the onset of the 1972-73 wrestling season the DHS Wrestling Team found themselves in a critical rebuilding year after losing nine of the twelve starters via graduation. Despite the prospects of a difficult season the enthusiasm was good and morale was high as the squad prepared for the seasons opener. The team this year was very deep at a few weights but did not have much depth at many others. Only stalwart performances by our proven regulars and the determination to make good by the many first year varsity men, added to the skillful strategies of Coach Kanaskie made it possible to salvage as respectable a season as they enjoyed. The Seals of Selinsgrove spoiled the lronmen debut by a 31 to 22 count, but the lronmen rebounded the following week to upset Central 29 to 24 in a close encounter. The Berwick wrestling juggernaut ripped the DHS matmen 49 to 5 and then, in one of their most disappointing performances, Mt. Carmel came away with a 33 to Z1 margin. The Mt. Carmel match marked the first sports contest in our beautifully remodeled gym which had been unavailable until now due to the damage left by Agnes. The first win in a varsity sport in the newly furnished gym was recorded in their next home match as they overwhelmed Line Mountain 60 to 4, establishing a new point record in the process. On the road again the Milton mats proved unfriendly as Danville was clawed by a 42 to 3 bulge. Again however they were able to bounce back from devastation and proved themselves poor hosts by beating Middleburg 32 to 17. lt was at this point the omen of illness reared its head over the DHS soft surface men. They were forced to face both Shamokin and Warrior Run without the services of four of the starters, and, despite gallant efforts by the remaining shell of the team, they dropped those matches 27 to 20 and 28 to 20 respectively. With only three victories under their belt the grapplers entered the last five matches with the prospects of a dismal season looming before them. Despite what had passed, spirits were still high, and things began to jell for the lronmen who proceeded to reel off four straight impressive victories. Shamokin Lourdes was victim ofa 38 to 11 onslaught, Bloomsburg went home a disappointed 39 to 18 loser, the Tigers of Southern Columbia had their tails twisted to a 44 to 11 tune, and Vo-Tech was held to but one win in a 51 to 6 lronmen victory. Only a 41 to 6 loss to powerful Shikcllamy unit spoiled a very successful ending to a fine season. Tournament competition proved very gratifying this year as the locals had three finalists in the Hughesville Christmas tourney with one of them, Doug Williams, bringing home first place gold. The post season sectional tournament saw the lronmen establish another school record by acquiring three championships. Steve Baney, Doug Williams, and Steve Krum won the sectional acclaim and Williams and Krum managed to add District 4 runners-up to their accolades. Steve Krum was the first DHS sophomore to ever reach this level of competition. Some line individual records should be mentioned. Steve Baney was undefeated in dual meets and logged an excellent 18-3-1 record. Don Brady, team captain, finished with a 15-5 record. Don's value came as a team performer. He could usually be counted on, not only for a victory, but for a six point pin. Winning records were also fashioned by Doug Williams 13-5-1, Steve Krum 13-5, Gary Zimmerman 8-4, Jim Kinn 8-5-1, Kim VanGilder 6-5, and Jim Connolley 8-7-l. Now that back to back highly successful seasons have passed it has become apparent to the Kanashie-Richie coaching team that the wrestling program is making wrestling devotees of the SVC and District 4 take notice. There is a multitude of examples for this, such as the SRO crowds at our home matches, Pep buses to away meets and the mad scramble for tournament tickets to name a few. A huge amount of our success must be credited to our seniors who bulwarked the team. Don Brady, Kim VanGi1der, Jim Connolley, Gary Zimmerman, Mark Swank, Harold Albertson, Mike Wydra, Pat Brady, Wilson Steinman, Frank Beyer, and Bob Walter will be difficult to replace. Trying to fill their shoes will be returning lettermen such as juniors Doug Williams, Jim Kinn, Marvin Fetterman and Chad Fetterolf, sophomores Terry Getkin and Steve Krum, along with members of the JV squad which registered a 7 and 6 season. Thanks again to all student, faculty, and community fans which are helping make a happy home for wrestling at DHS. R D gm Compliments of CLEWELL VENDING SERVICE Congratulations to the Class of '73 from THE CLASS OF '74 Congratulations to the Class of '73 from THE CLASS OF '75 L The Student Government Association of Danville High began the 1972-1973 academic year with one goal in mind-to do what was necessary to help make the school a smooth-running institution for all involved. Many of our social events are traditionally Student Government functions. During the course of the year, our activities included 1. Homecoming, complete with a dance and the crowning of the Homecoming Queen. 2. The Prettiest Legs on the Football Team Contest, an annual spirit-builder for the Ironmen gridders. 3. Slave Days. 4. Sadie I-lawkin's Days. 5. The Student Government Spring Dance. 6. Several assembly programs designed to help seniors prepare for what is ahead next year. 7. An Easter assembly. 8. A mock election which allowed students to cast ballots for national, state, and local officials. 9. The School Store which, in its third year of operation is a popular spot with the students. In addition to our social activities, the Student Government has attempted to provide a forum to which all students can turn with their problems. We have tried to alter several policies in the school this past year, including 1. The grading of classroom citizenship, and 2. the detention hall program. In both instances we were able to modify the policies in question in a manner which we believed made them fairer and more effective. We had several activities which concluded our year in a most satisfactory manner. They were 1. The trip by the officers and advisor to the District Student Council Convention in Williamsport. 2. The election of officers for the 1973-1974 term. Finally, we have many people to thank for all their help over the months. The representatives, who attended meetings, discussed, planned, and did the work involved in all our activities, the students, who made criticisms and suggestions and generally helped us try to help them, the faculty and the administration, who co-operated with and aided us whenever possible, and particularly our advisor, Mr. Edwin Klinger, a man who guided us over many a rough spot with a simple word of advice or a fresh idea. May those who follow be as fortunate as we were.
