We take this opportunity to congratulate the members of the squad, their coach Mr. Bills, and the members of the faculty who assisted in the success of the season. By taking nine games from a ten game football schedule, our team won the Susquehanna League Championship. This is the second championship team for Danville in the past five years-a cherished record indeed. In addition. the highly prized Judy Price Trophy was brought back to our trophy case when Bloomsburg was defeated 13-6. The season started off with an outstanding 25-12 victory over West Hazle- ton, thus avenging last year's defeat. Selinsgrove was the second team to taste defeat from the Ironmen offen- sive. The Ironmen slipped by them 12-6. The Orange and Purple's next venture was to South Williamsport where they piled up a 31-12 win over the Mountaineers. Returning home. the Ironmen continued their winning streak by taking Yeagerstown 20-7. jersey Shore was next on the Bi11smen's list. They were the first team to take a lead on the Ironmen. But. in the second half, the Billsmen came back to take the game 7-2. Thomas Vincent, Jack liloskey. Harold Shutt. SUSQUEHANNA LEAGUE CHAMPIONS The Orange and Purple cagers turned in the most outstanding basketball season in the history of the high school. The Ironmen won their first Susque- hanna League Championship by taking the laurels in both the first and second halves of competition. It was apparent that the team would be a serious threat to any opponent after they had completed their pre-season schedule with only one loss. This was to Coal Township, but in the second meeting the Billsmen bounced back with a win for sweet revenge. Moving into regular league play, the Orange and Purple saw their chances for the first half crown fade when the Sunbury Owls handed them their first, and only, league defeat. Sunbury was later beaten unexpectedly by two teams, which gave the Billsmen undisputed right to the first half championship. The second half passed with the Danville team going all the way without a defeat. The entire season was marked by many two or three point victories for the Ironmen, but the one game that provided the rnost outstanding finish was the second game with the Sunbury Owls. The Ironmen were out for revenge and got it via an after-the-buzzer foul shot by Joe Hickey. Having won the Susquehanna Championship entitled the Ironmen to a chance at the District 4 title. In their first game they outplayed a favored Coal Township quintet but were unable to keep the baskets coming when they faced Williamsport in the District finals. Each team played its best, but none of them could beat Robert Sherm Hendricks' Lakers. The Lakers won all their games in the regular season and defeated the All Stars in a post-season contest. The Lakers are pictured at the top right. As usual Mr. McCloskey did a swell job running the league and overseeing the playing, nights after school and Saturday mornings.
