POLITICS In 1970, due to political circumstances, students at many college campuses revolted against the American political system. On June 30, 1971 the United States gained 11 million voters, when Ohio rati- fied an amendment allowing 18 year olds the right to vote. In 1972, George McGovern and Thomas Eagleton became the shortest-lived presi- dential ticket in history. Eagleton was dumped when his past mental depression was brought to light. McGovern and Sar- gent Shriver then teamed up but ended up losing to Nixon Agnew. On Oct. 10, 1973, Spiro Agnew resigned as vice-president after pleading no contest to tax evation charges. On August 8, 1974, in the Oval Office, Richard Nixon made a live broadcast say- ing the he would resign the next day. His decision came after impeachment pro- ceedings started. In 1974, President Gerald Ford's Whip Inflation Now'' became his slogan for an anti-inflation program. In 1975, President Gerald Ford became the intended target when Lynette ' 'Sque- key'' Fromme aimed her gun. In 1976, a peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia named Jimmy Carter won the presidential election. Carter was the first President from the deep South since the Civil War. In January of 1977, James Carter was in- augurated to the Presidency. Carter stated in his inaugural speech that he would con- centrate on inflation. 3 PERSONALITIES The famous blues queen Janis Joplin died of a heroin overdose on Oct. 4, 1970. In 1971, Twenty-one year old Phyllis George was the first Miss America in history whose crown fell off while Bert Parks warbled ' 'There she goes .... In 1974, Heiress Patty Hearst was abducted by a group calling itself the 1 'Symbionese Liber- ation Army'1 Feb. 4. Three months later, the University of California art student had re- nounced her past life in a tape recording and made the FBI wanted list for her part in a bank robbery. In 1975, blueprints for a nuclear bomb earned Princeton's John Aristotle Phillips an A from his physics prof, but the government wasn't so pleased and swiftly classified them. Also in 1975, the right to die a natural death was an issue in the case of twenty-one year old Karen Ann Quinlan, who slipped into a coma after mixing drugs and alcohol and was put on a respirator. In 1977, the dreaded killer who called himself ' 'Son of Sam'' turned out to be a postal clerk named David Berkowitz. In 1978, Allan Bakke, a thirty-eight year old engineer, won admission to medical school when the Supreme Court ruled that he was a victim of reverse discrimination. “ENTER TAINMENT” The seventies produced the biggest mon- ey-makers of the century. The highest grossing movies were 1 'Love Story'', ' 'The Godfather , The Exorcist , Jaws , Rocky , Saturday Night Fever , and '' Star Wars''. These movies brought to the spotlight such stars as John Travolta, Syl- vester Stallone, and Linda Blair. Television hits such as M A S'H , Soap , Happy Days , Charlie's Angels , and ' 'All In The Family'' gave us suck superstars as Hear Winkler and Farrah Fawcett-1, la Jots, hlore people watched ' 'Roots than any other television show in history. The biggest selling albums of the seven- ties were ' 'Frampton Comes Alive , Saturday Night Fever , and Rumors . The hit singles were Stairway to Heav- en by Led Zeppiin, Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees, and ''Bennie and the Jets by Elton John. 7 The early 70's were dominated by campus riots and disturbances. Students were beginning to stand up for their rights and problems were aris- ing . Many of the riots were violent and some people were killed such as in the case of Kent State University. The middle 70' s saw the end to riots and the start of new trends on campuses over the country. Streaking became a favorite pastime of many people across the nation during the middle 70's. Ray Stevens' novelty hit 1 'The Streak'' was very popular. The ' 'bump'' was the next ' 'in''. It was the dance that gave people the opportunity to express themselves. The slogan of the late 70's was ' 'physical fit- ness and all types of sports are popular. People flocked to sports stores across the coun- try for the latest in sweatshirts, socks, and track shoes for jogging. '' Running'' became the topic of many books and conversation. The every-popular ' 'Saturday Night Fever'' brought disco-dancing into the spotlight. Disco- teques have popped up everywhere and some people are wondering if this disco craze will continue or if it is simply another ' 'fad''. 8 FASHIONS An intimate part of our daily lives, and are which influences our very existence. Style plays an important role in a stu- dent's life. Peers judge his taste, status, and generally base their opinions about a person's character on the mode of living represented by his clothes. The decade of the 70's came alive with mini-skirts, T-shirts, hot pants, and boots. Girls could not wait to get out of mom's sight to raise up the length of the dress a little, or roll the top of a skirt. ' 'Bare'' was definately ' 'in''. Boys' t- shirts and tank-tops revealed what they considered a ' 'Muscular torso.'' Toward the mid-seventies, designers captured an idea which would make for them millions in hard cash. The Earth shoes. Designed for comfort and wearability, this incredibliy simple shoe brought about an amazing change in footwear, and everyone wanted to be a part in this ' 'foot healthly'' revolution. The late seventies saw a drastic change in womens' dresses. Whereas before the skirt length had been mid-thigh, it now dropped to mid-calf. The new longer look emphasized slimness in the legs, and ruffles accentuated the total woman. Perhaps there is one article of clothing, though, that has not changed, nor will ever really be. It's comfort and versitility have made it the number one choice of all American's students. And no matter how the designer embroiders, cuffs, trims, or flairs it, it still remains the same. We've made it our favorite, and so will it our fa - vorite, and so will it always be......... The Blue Jeans. 11 SPOR TS The 70's have been known to most Americans as the 1 'Thrill of Victory,'' period. In this dec- ade , we had literally unknown athletes take the spotlight of stardom in different sports1 arenas. We had a black baseball player go over the 3,000th career hitting mark. Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves joined eight others in the coveted 3,000 club. He also broke the all-time home run record of the late Babe Ruth. Our nation sent athletes to two Olympics. In '72, in Munich, Germany, an unknown Ameri- can swimmer named Mark Spitz shocked the world as he captured seven gold medals in men's swimming competition, making a clean sweep for the Americans. The world also received a shock as the USSR basketball team upset the heavily favored U. S. team. Wrestlers from the U. S. also came to light as three Americans cap- tured gold and seven finished within the top four places. The second Olympics of this decade came in '76 when the U.S. boxing team took the spot- light as five Americans took gold medals, two silver and one bronze. Our women swimmers shined as they captured all but one of the gold medals. The men's competiton duplicated this as the American team totally dominated the Olympic fields and arenas. We regained the gold in basketball competition as the U.S. team closed down the up-starting Yugoslavian team. Also, a woman came into the spotlight as the Winter Olympics came to a close. Dorothy Ha- mill set a new’ style as she dipped and swayed her w’ay to a gold medal in the Woman's figure skat- ing event. 12 ENERGY CRISIS An Arabian Decision in 1971 to limit oil shipments to the United States resulted in a severe gas shortage and an overall energy crisis. This act by the Arabians revealed to ev- eryone the United States' large dependence on cheap energy. In 1974, the National Academy of Engi- neering estimated $600 billion dollars as the capital investment required for the United States to increase its production of basic energy sources enough to supply its needs by 1985. The percentage of the United States' oil use met by imports increased from 23.3% in 1970 to 37.4% in 1975, and the price per barrel of oil at the Persian Gulf in- creased from October, 1973, $2.0 to $10.25 in January, 1975. In 1977, a severe cold wave swept the nation during the first quarter of the year which extremely shortened the natural gas supply in scores of cities east of the Missis- sippi . A worldwide shortage of 5 million barrels of oil a day-or a global recession-is prob- able in the mid-1980's, and the prospect of substantial new discoveries of oil in the United States is not probable. • vr t Jh % _A. v r - • ,r ■ } •■ •••• •■‘Jf •- i T 2 !—. v r ■ fZ:r V «.
