COTTONWOOD The War Hawks began their 1972 season at-home against Cotton- wood. Daleville’s first score came in the second quarter when Cliff Smith went 15 yards around the end. Dwight Hughes added the extra point. The Hawks only other score was in the fourth quarter which ended a drive of 40 yards. But these two touchdowns were not enough, as Cottonwood tallied 42 points, which proved the margin. The Bears won, 42-12. 117 DALEVILLE VS. GOSHEN Daleville traveled to Goshen for their first victory of the year. The Hawks won by a tremendous 30-0. Our first score came when Smith carried it up the middle 14 yards. The point after failed. In the second quarter, David Loree intercepted an Eagle pass and returned it 20 yards for six. The two point conversion was good. Late in the third quarter Hughes kicked a 23 yard field goal and Daleville led 17-0. Goshen punted and the Hawks marched 42 yards for another seven points. Then Tom Kerfoot ran over from the 5 for the final six points. This game showed real teamwork and effort on our part. DALEVILLE VS. RED LEVEL Coming off their first win, Daleville was prepared to give the Red Level Tigers a good game. Daleville pulled out a 12-6 win. Daleville was behind at the half 6-0, and we didn't get rolling until the last 5 minutes of the game. McLin threw a pass to Hagen for the tieing TD. With 1 minute left, Powell returned a blocked punt for the winning score. 118 DALEVILLE VS. COLUMBIA Daleville went to Columbia not knowing the chain of events to come. The Hawks first six points came in the second quarter on an end around play to Chuck Hagen for 10 yards and the score. Daleville had 2 other TD’s called back in the first half, and Columbia led 14-7 at the half. Our final touchdown came late in the fourth quarter after a previous TD had been called back. The final score was 14-14. DALEVILLE VS. HEADLAND With the War Hawk record standing 2-1-1, they were expecting a rough game against the undefeated Headland Rams. A rough game is what we got. Daleville’s kicking squad was really tested as the Hawks punted 8 times. The powerful Ram offense gave our defense a hard time, scoring time and time again. The final margin was 38-0. 119 DALEVILLE VS. LOUISVILLE After losing to Headland the War Hawks needed a win badly. It looked as though this would be it, as we led 12-0 in the first quarter. The first six came from Cliff Smith’s 12 yard ramble up the middle. The conversion failed. The Dalevilie's defense held and Louisville punted. The Hawks then mustered a drive of 41 yards and scored. The Red Devils came back in the second quarter and the game was tied 12-12 at the half, in the third quarter Daieville took the kickoff and moved it all the way down to the 10 yard line. From there Smith ran it over for the score. Hughes added the extra point, and we led 19-12. But Louisville wasn’t through. They came back in the 4th quarter with 18 points, and won 30-19. 120 DALEVILLEVS. SAMSON The Hawks traveled to Samson hoping to win. We were surprised when they opened up with a 14 point lead in the first quarter. Daleville capped a 41 yard drive with a 10 yard TD. pass from McLin to Carlisle. David also ran over the two point conversion. But the mighty Tiger offense came back and led 28-8 at the half. The Hawks scored again in the fourth quar- ter with a 3 yard run by Smith. Hughes kicked the extra point. Samson rallied for 14 more points in the third and fourth quarters to win 42-15. 121 DALEVILLE VS. DALE COUNTY Daleville looked rough and ready for the Dale County game. The Hawk offense and defense both worked hard during the game, but the Warrior's were prepared. The Warrior defense did their job in stopping all but 2 of the Hawk scoring drives. The first score came on a romp by Smith of 15 yards. In the 3rd quarter. Brand scrambled 19 yards for six more. But the Warrior offense was also rolling, scoring 32 big points. Rival Dale County won by a margin of 32-14. 122 DALEVILLE VS. ASHFORD Up to this point Daleville's record stood 2-5-1, and beating Ashford was what we needed. The War Hawk coaches did all they could in preparation for the game, studying plays, watching films, and trying new defenses. But the Yellow Jackets showed their power, scoring 36 points in the first half. In the fourth quarter, Daleville finally got rolling. The Hawks scored on a pass from Ricky McLin to David Carlisle from 19 yards out. The extra point was good. Then Cliff Smith ran the ball around the end for 15 yards and another score. The Hawks should be given credit for their great effort in this game although the Ashford Yellow Jackets won 46-14. 123 DALEVILLEVS. HOUSTON ACADEMY (HOMECOMING!) This year the War Hawk season ended with our homecoming game against play-off bound Houston Academy. Daleville looked fired up and ready to win, for this was the Senior players last game. The Raiders got on the scoreboard late in the first quarter and led 7-0. The Hawks got the ensuing kick and marched 46 yards to the Raider five-yard line. Then Senior quarterback Rick McLin ran an end around and scored the TD. The point after kick failed. The Hawk defense held the Raider offense for most of the second quarter, but they got on the board again with a quick screen pass. Daleville's final drive of half was stopped short on their own 46 and Houston Academy led 14-6. 124 The Raiders scored again in the third quarter and made the score 21-6. Facing a fourth and fifteen, situation on the War Hawk 33, McLin dropped back into punt formation. He faked the punt and threw a screen pass to Tom Kerfoot which covered 77 yards and the score. This was surely the best of- fensive effort put forth by Daleville all night. But the Raider offense put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter with a 21 yard run. The extra point failed, but the Raiders won 27-12. 125 Cliff Smith, Don Moore, Eddy Boynton, Ricky McLin, Coach Kennedy, George Eldredge, Randy Kuhn, David Carlisle, Jay Press.
