Underway, The QM's of The Tall ships sTood mosT of Their wafches aT'The helm, hence The wheel on The modern QM's raTing badge. . Today, The QM raTe has changed liTTle. His work space, The bridge, is sTill The cenTer of command aboard ship, All of The Navy's oldesT TradiTions can be found in The QM Training manuals. MosT modern day QM's are experienced masTer helmsmen, rewarded afTer unTold hours aT The ship's wheel. QM's mainTain The ship's deck log and oTher legal documenTs. All These jobs are secondary To his primary funcTion, To navigaTe and assisT The officer of The deck in locaTing and mainTaining The ship's posiTion aT sea and in coasTal waTers. To do This he uses eauipmenf as old as The Navy and as modern as compuTers and UHF radio waves. He uses meThods perfecTed since The days of sail, meThods as new and Technologically advanced as saTilliTes and radar. Even wiTh his imporTanT mission, NavigaTion is The smallesT Division on board DALE. Five men make up N Division, working as many as TwenTy hours a day To ensure The safeTy and efficiency of Their ship. NoThing has changed for The QM since The days of sail. He can be found aT The wheel or pouring over his charTs, gazing aT The sky To re- porT The weaTher, or jusT sTar gazing. He's proud To be a auarTermasTer, proud of his ship.
