Superintendents of Dade County, 1925- 1975 The county school superintendent as the executive officer of the board of education acts under its advice and direction and has supervision over all schools and the employees. The superintendent keeps in mind the purposes of the Dade County Schools as he carries out his executive duties. At the dedication exercises of the new building on September 7, 1925, the 500 pupils from all schools attended. At the beginning of school on August 24, 1974, 2272 pupils were enrolled in the county schools, which indicates the growth in Dade County in fifty years. Mr. S. J. Hale was county school superintendent at the time of the dedication and had served for a number of years prior to that. He served until January 1933 when J. Lunsford Fricks became superintendent. During the next seven years several of the one teacher schools were con- solidated with other schools. In 1930 a junior high school was constructed in the north end of the county. In 1934 a gymnasium, a WPA project, was built at Dade High. In 1936 Davis Junior High School was constructed of beautiful native sand stone on Sand Mountain. 1937 witnessed the construction of another junior high school at Rising Fawn. In August 1939 Supt. Fricks resigned to become postmaster at Rising Fawn. Mr. S. J. Hale was appointed by the board of education to com- plete Supt. Fricks' term. In January 1941 Mr. Luther M. Allison became superintendent and served for eight years. In 1948 Davis Junior High was declared a senior high school. In January 1949 Mr. Roy W. Moore became superintendent in which capacity he served for twelve years. After a study by the faculty and administration, which required several years, the county adopted a twelve year program in 1951-52. An extensive building program began in the county in 1954 with additions or new buildings at all locations. In January 1961, Mr. D. O. Chumley assumed the role of superintendent and served until August 1967 when he resigned to accept another position. In 1962 written school policies were formulated and adopted to assure that the school system was well organized and functional within a framework that all personnel understood. In August 1967 Mr. D. L. Stanphill became superintendent, and is still serving in that capactiy today. Many improvements have been made in the schools in the last few years and many more are in sight as we move toward a new program at the Northwest Georgia High School. ROY W. MOORE D. O. CHUMLEY DEXTER L. STANPHILL 1949-1960 1961-Aug. 1967 Sept. 1967-1975 17

MRS. PHYLLIS SMITH Office Clerk Until September 1975 the princi- pal of the high school had also served as principal of the ele- mentary school. At that time the enrollment had become so large and the program had become so diversified that the administra- tion felt that it would be advan- tageous to all concerned to pro- vide an elementary principal for grades 1-6 and a high school principal for grades 7-12. Mr. James E. Cleveland became the first principal of Trenton Ele- mentary School where he served two years. After Mr. Cleveland was named principal of the high school for the 1967-68 year, Mr. A. J. Layne was designated as assistant principal in charge of the elementary school. In September 1968 Mr. Stringer became principal of Trenton Ele- mentary School and has served well in that position since then. In the fall of 1969 a new brick building with office space, five classrooms, a library, and a caf- eteria was ready for use. These new facilities helped improve the curriculum and the services rendered to the students and the teachers. 19
