The 1975 WILDCAT REFLECTIONS Dade County High School Trenton, Georgia Buildings Reflect in a Structural Way . . . Changes and growth experienced by Dade County High School since its location on this campus and the dedication of the first building on Monday, September 7, 1925, are many. The wooden addition in 1941 provided space for the first lunchroom which later moved to a separate block building now used by the band. Home economics in a log cabin, the commercial department in a converted skating rink, and classes in army barracks came to an end in 1956, when the high school moved into a more ade- quate building. The last build- ings to be constructed on this campus were a gymnasium in 1963, an elementary building in 1969 and a field house in 1974. Progress continues as the first consolidated high school of Dade County moves to a new location to be known as Northwest Georgia High School. Influence of Administration and Faculty Establishes Heart of School. . . The influence of the administra- tion and faculty upon the student body established the true heart of our school. Real quality is reflected in these relationships. The effects of guidance, inspira- tion, and dedication over a period of fifty years will not be easily discredited. Memories. . . Just as many students before us have worn blue jeans and denim shirts, they too have their own memories. Whether we partici- pate by doing or by watching, this is a part of student life. Rec- ollections of homecoming, band rehearsals, or just resting may add a bit of nostalgia. J Special Occasions Spice School The homecoming parade and pep rallies added spice to school life. Even relaxation on the campus and amusing incidents in the classroom still existed. Occa- sionally serious study was experi- enced by some and found to be very meaningful. School Activities Add That Extra Something. . . School activities add that extra something to an education. Par- ticipation in extracurricular activities provides enrichment to the lives of students and helps them become well-rounded indi- viduals. Long Hours of Practice Are Recalled. . . Athletics demand long hours of practice, but after many years these experiences for players and spectators may recall some of the fondest memories. Pride in our school is fostered by active par- ticipation by players, students, parents and friends. REFLECTIONS of Academics 15 Athletics 67 Activities 101 Advertisers 139 ACADEMICS Reflect Purpose 15 Board of Education Time was when each school was under the direction of a local board of trustees with the Dade County Board of Education responsible for the overall system of education in the county. Today the Board of Education is composed of five members, one each from a different geo- graphical location in the county, appointed by the March grand jury for a period of five years. One member is appointed each year. This board is charged with the responsibility for the formulation of those policies necessary for the operation of all schools in Dade County and by the same token have full authority in school matters under the laws of the State of Georgia. Policy is car- ried out in the form of direc- tives, regulations, and job descriptions necessary to the administration of the school sys- tem and the individual schools. We are grateful for the inter- ested and dedicated citizens who have served as trustees or mem- bers of the Board of Education over the years in order that the children of the county might receive the best education possi- ble. LEFT TO RIGHT. SEATED: Mr. Alec Houts, Mr. Robert Bowden. STANDING: Mr. William Tatum. Chairman: Mr. Merrill Smyth. NOT PICTURED: Mr. George Sims. Superintendents of Dade County, 1925- 1975 The county school superintendent as the executive officer of the board of education acts under its advice and direction and has supervision over all schools and the employees. The superintendent keeps in mind the purposes of the Dade County Schools as he carries out his executive duties. At the dedication exercises of the new building on September 7, 1925, the 500 pupils from all schools attended. At the beginning of school on August 24, 1974, 2272 pupils were enrolled in the county schools, which indicates the growth in Dade County in fifty years. Mr. S. J. Hale was county school superintendent at the time of the dedication and had served for a number of years prior to that. He served until January 1933 when J. Lunsford Fricks became superintendent. During the next seven years several of the one teacher schools were con- solidated with other schools. In 1930 a junior high school was constructed in the north end of the county. In 1934 a gymnasium, a WPA project, was built at Dade High. In 1936 Davis Junior High School was constructed of beautiful native sand stone on Sand Mountain. 1937 witnessed the construction of another junior high school at Rising Fawn. In August 1939 Supt. Fricks resigned to become postmaster at Rising Fawn. Mr. S. J. Hale was appointed by the board of education to com- plete Supt. Fricks' term. In January 1941 Mr. Luther M. Allison became superintendent and served for eight years. In 1948 Davis Junior High was declared a senior high school. In January 1949 Mr. Roy W. Moore became superintendent in which capacity he served for twelve years. After a study by the faculty and administration, which required several years, the county adopted a twelve year program in 1951-52. An extensive building program began in the county in 1954 with additions or new buildings at all locations. In January 1961, Mr. D. O. Chumley assumed the role of superintendent and served until August 1967 when he resigned to accept another position. In 1962 written school policies were formulated and adopted to assure that the school system was well organized and functional within a framework that all personnel understood. In August 1967 Mr. D. L. Stanphill became superintendent, and is still serving in that capactiy today. Many improvements have been made in the schools in the last few years and many more are in sight as we move toward a new program at the Northwest Georgia High School. ROY W. MOORE D. O. PHYLLIS SMITH Office Clerk Until September 1975 the princi- pal of the high school had also served as principal of the ele- mentary school. At that time the enrollment had become so large and the program had become so diversified that the administra- tion felt that it would be advan- tageous to all concerned to pro- vide an elementary principal for grades 1-6 and a high school principal for grades 7-12. Mr. James E. Cleveland became the first principal of Trenton Ele- mentary School where he served two years. After Mr. Cleveland was named principal of the high school for the 1967-68 year, Mr. A. J. Layne was designated as assistant principal in charge of the elementary school. In September 1968 Mr. Stringer became principal of Trenton Ele- mentary School and has served well in that position since then. In the fall of 1969 a new brick building with office space, five classrooms, a library, and a caf- eteria was ready for use. These new facilities helped improve the curriculum and the services rendered to the students and the teachers. 19 First Grade MRS. VELMA CLARK B. S. University of Chattanooga MRS. THELMA GRAY B.S. Those who have been crowned as homecoming queens are: 1953 Joan Craig (Mrs. Bobby Jo Gifford) 1954 Elsie York (Mrs. Franklin Baker) 1955 Judy Pace (Mrs. Bobby Forester) 1956 Patsy Wheeler (Mrs. Philip Smith) 1957 Fran Houston 1958 Rochelle McBryar (Mrs. Morrell Holcomb) 1959 Jo Ann Steele (Mrs. Dale Sims) 1960 Ann Marie Steele (Mrs. Max Kesler) 1961 Karen Barber (Mrs. Theodore Philip Crowley) 1962 Alice McKaig 1963 Janice Payne (Mrs. David Raines) 1964 Linda Foster (Mrs. Arnold McConville 1965 Sherry Craze 1966 Debbie Johnston 1967 Hannah Steele (Mrs. Kenny Rogers) 1968 Deborah Craze 1969 Mary West (Mrs. Larry Moore) 1970 Jackie Mason 1971 Pam West 1972 Debbie Shrader 1973 Alice Wallen 1974 Joan Avery The name of Joan must have some significance for Dade County High School since the first queen and the last queen both had that name. May the spirit of friendship and concern for others continue in days to come at Northwest Georgia High School. Homecoming is one of the most outstanding events at Dade High. Each year alumni return for the festivi- ties of the momentous occasion. Gladys Morrison, Belle Reeves, Olive Reeves, Mary Rogers, and Dalue Morrison dressed in black bloomers and white middies took the court to participate in a basketball game. The court was out- doors and was lined off with lime. Later that after- noon the boys dressed in maroon and white and led by their principal and coach, G. C. Austin, took to the court. However, basketball was sport during this time. In 1948 the Dade High gym, which had been use by teams from the whole county and also for county school officials to drop basketball at Dade High. Basketball returned to the school in 1962 with the construction of a new gym. The boys and girls at Dade High have indicated that given an equal opportunity they could compete with the best. In 1966-67 the boys’ team led by Lee Fuller compiled an 18-9 record. Lee was chosen All Tri-State and set a school scoring record. In 1967 a new type of basketball for Dade High was introduced which was cal led .pressure and fast break basketball. This exciting brand of basketball kept Dade in the top three in the region for the past eight years. In 1970-71 the Dade High boys won the first region championship in the school's history. The boys repeated the region championship in 1971-72. This past season Ray Hill set the all time scoring record for the boys and the single game record with 45 points in one game. Since 1957 the Dade High boys have filled the tro- phy cases with more baseball trophies than any other sport. There have been many excellent coaches and players. Some of our students are making good records on college baseball teams. It helps students learn to serve others, to sacrifice for the betterment of the school, and to work as a representative body for many different groups. Since 1950 the school has had a Student Council with the following students serving as presi- dent of the council: Jack Murphy, Norris Sims, Ronald Everette, Phil Ryan, Harold Shan- kles, Rochelle McBryar, Mary Jane Price, Richard McKaig, Charles Haygood, Rosemary Kirk, Sharon Reeves, William Stanphill, Nancy Houts, Dorothy Atkins, Peggy Mullins, Eddie Norwood, Maria Slaton, Kathy Forester, Steve Baugh, Ronnie Hawkins, and Roxie Scott. One of the outstanding activities sponsored by the Student Council has been the Miss Spring- time pageant. The Miss Springtime beauty pageant began as an event to recognize young ladies and their development in the areas of beauty, personality, and charm. The contest was expanded to include judges' interviews with the girls to better enable the judges to assess these qualities. Girls also were required to perform a talent routine or to model an outfit. The beauty pageant brought together some of the most charming and talented ladies in our area and was anticipated by many as one of the most enjoyable events of the year. The pageant began in 1961 when Linda Jo Pace was crowned the first Miss Springtime. Oth- ers have been Darla Avakian, Frances Avakian, Nancy Houts, Wanda Johnson, Judy Adkins, Carolyn Durham, Vivica Quinton, Carolyn Bradford, Kathy Forester, Audrey Jeffery, Sharon Carson, Cindy Gross, Many Moore, and Vicki Tatum. Its purpose is to stimulate effort, to reward achievement, and to encourage and assist its members to continue their education after high school. Qualifications for individual membership include worthy character, good mentality, creditable achievement, and commendable attitude. In addi- tion to these qualifications, a scholastic average of 90 must be maintained in order to remain a member of the organization at Dade High. The earliest available record of a Beta Club at Dade High was 1947 with Ruble Livingston as president. Other leaders have been Shirley Paine, Patsy Neely, Mary Belle Barton, Rayford Hammond, Charles Pace, John Han- cock, Richard Fricks, Linda Foster, Nancy Byers, Lee Fuller, Mary Jane Blevins, Jerry Cooper, Debbie Chandler, Kristy Shelton, Louise Bradford, Rose Smith, Donna McAdams, and Cindy Wallin. The Beta Club has been active with various projects and activities. It has organized a Junior Beta Club at Dade High and has sponsored road blocks for March of Dimes, Heart Fund, and Cancer Drives. It has purchased flags for the school and painted some classrooms and restrooms. Above all it has fostered the qualifications mentioned above in the individual students. Many stu- dents have rendered valuable service to their school, to their teachers, and to their fellow stu- dents in their capacity as library assistants. Mrs. J. L. Fricks served as librarian from 1937-1944, Mrs. Stella T. Carroll served from 1944-1966, and Mrs. Fricks served again from 1966-1975. Its sponsor at that time was Mrs. Sandra Wallace; its membership totaled 32. In the eight years since the club was established, its sponsors have included Miss Janis Brabham, Mrs. Willie Hughes, Mrs. Rosemary Lovingood Foxall, and for the past five years, Mrs. Linda Meyer Sullivan. Its memberships have ranged from 12 to 83. Past presidents include Judy Limbagh, Charlotte Johnson, Vivica Quinton, Vicki Keeton, Kathy Tinker, Diane Buffington, Pam Byers, Michelle Beene Hurst, and Randy Sharp. It is interesting to note that one of our business teachers, Mrs. Helen Reynolds Geddie, was among the members of that first F.B.L. A. here at Dade. The purposes of F.B.L.A. are very defi- nite: to develop competent business lead- ers, to create more interest and under- standing in the intelligent choice of busi- ness occupations, and to foster participa- tion in worthy undertakings for the devel- opment of business and citizenship. During the past sixteen years the band has boosted the enthusiasm at pep rallies and athletic events, has entertained at other times with concerts, and has provided music for graduation. There is no way of estimating the benefits derived by participation of the many individuals. The band has participated in various band festivals over the years and has received excellent and supe- rior ratings several times. Band directors have been Charles Helton, James Hol- combe, Charles Stanberry, Richard Jones (6 1 2 years), Charles Helton, J. It reminds members that their contributions to home life today will influence the kinds of homes they have tomorrow; that the family life of members will influence the com- munity and the world. Some of the activities of the past have been the sweetheart dance, slumber parties, remembering others at Christmas, the mother- daughter banquet, reception for seniors, attendance at F.H.A. State Conventions and attendance at the spring and fall district meetings. Some of the teachers of the homemaking courses and thus advisors to the F.H.A. clubs have been Miss Elizabeth Johnson, Miss Agnes Hubble, Mrs. Martha Pullen, Miss Sara Shattuck, Mrs. Geneva Allison, Mrs. J. Industrial Arts was introduced at Dade High School in 1964 with the completion of the new building which housed the Industrial Arts Lab. The program was not started until January 1965 when Charles Johnston was hired as the school's first Industrial Arts instructor. The first pro- gram consisted of woodworking, metal working, and drafting. The Industrial Arts department added a second instructor in 1967. Morrell Hol- comb, taught drafting from 1967-1973. During the 1972-73 school year an Indus- trial Arts Club was formed with some 40 members. The club has been active on the local and state level since that time. The main objective of Industrial Arts is not necessarily to teach skill in these areas, but to give a better understanding of the world that surrounds us. Industrial Arts will continue in the Dade County School System after the 1974-75 school year, but it will be primarily on the junior high level as a prevocational course. UPPER LEFT, OFFICERS. The first club was a Boys' Com Club, organized at Cov- ington, Georgia in 1905 under the leadership of Mr. G. C. Adams, county school superintendent. The year 1914 saw the beginning of the Southeastern Fair in Atlanta as a direct result of the com shows held the previous years. 4-H Clubs are organized and conducted under the immediate supervision of county agents and county extension home economists in each county. Records are not available to show when 4-H work began in Dade County which has had only five county agents: John R. McDaniel, Howard Baker, 0. G. Arial, L. C. Adams, and George T. Jones. Mr. Adams served from 1942-1969 while Mr. Jones has been in the county since February 1, 1970. Kathryn Berryman was the first home economist in 1942 and some of the others who have served have been Patty Boswell, Clara Moss, Atha Lee Vestal, Naomi Hubble, and Betty Gass. Dade County has had four Master 4-H Club members: George A. Carroll, Jr., James Price, Kathryn Fricks, and Ray Bobo. UPPER RIGHT. LEFT TO RIGHT. SEATED: Vicki Cox, President: Alecia Hawes. Yearbook Staff The first yearbook in the history of Dade County High School was published during the 1947-48 school year under the editorship of Rose Dyer, our own Mrs. Lamar Moore who is now librarian of the Trenton Elementary School. It was called DADE ECHOES then and also the next year when Cynthia Moore was editor with Mrs. Geneva Allison as advisor. The 1949-50 edition was entitled DADE MEMORIES with Mickey Blevins as editor and Mrs. Stella Carroll as advisor. The 1950-51 yearbook was called DADE SOUVE- NIRS with Lacey Neal as editor and Mrs. Stella Carroll as advisor. No yearbook was published in 1951-52 since that was the transition year from a program of eleven grades to twelve grades in Dade County. The title, DADE MEMORIES, was used the next two years with editors Janie Brad- ford and Barbara Jo Hatfield in charge. THE WILDCAT was selected as the title for the 1954-55 yearbook and that title has been used every year since then. Most of the years since then the book has either been maroon or white in keeping with the school colors. Since 1954 the yearbook editors have been Joan Craig, Patsy Neely, Adelle Har- ris, Dion Bradford, Jackie Carroll, Anna Walker, Linda Cole, Anthony Emanuel, Janie Carroll, Myra Ryan, Edna Reeves, Nancy Byers, Nancy Houts, Gail Moore, Marian McKaig, Vickie Keeton, Kathy Tinker, Claudia Moore, Linda Hawkins, and Judy Kay Woodyard. In the twenty-seven years of yearbook history, Judy Kay Wood- yard has the signal honor of having been the only student who served as editor for two years. The Wildcat advisors have been Mrs. Nora Thomas, Mr. C. D. Cheatham, Mrs. H. L. Griffith, and Mrs. Marjora Fricks. Mrs. Fricks has been the advisor for the past 18 years. During the past four summers several members of the yearbook staff have attended a week’s workshop at Wesleyan College or Emory University. Each year the staff received one of the top awards given for excellent work. The last year the staff received one of the Sweepstakes awards. 124 UPPER LEFT: Jimmy, do you always carry around girls' coats and purses? BELMONT STUDIO 1433-D Montgomery Highway Birmingham, Alabama 35216 Wildcat' Dedication to a Devoted Teacher Mrs. Fricks has been very dedicated to the yearbook for the past eighteen years. It has taken a lot of time and effort on her part and without such a concerned advisor the yearbook could not have been the book it has been all these years. She has helped and guided the many students that have served on the yearbook staff during her years as advisor. She cared and the staff knew it. Not only has Mrs. Fricks been dedi- cated to the yearbook work, she has been a very devoted teacher. Mrs. Fricks has taught here in Dade County since the beginning of her teaching career. Mrs. Fricks has taught school thirty-five years and after this year she is retiring. During her thirty-five years of teach- ing, Mrs. Fricks has taught in many fields of education. Her teaching experience includes: 1937-1944, teacher-librarian - Dade County High School; 1947-1948, principal and teacher - Rising Fawn Jr. High; 1948-1949, teacher - English and Mathematics - Rising Fawn Jr. High; 1949-1966- teacher - English, French, Mathematics - Dade County High School; 1966-1975, librarian - Dade County High School. Her degrees include: A.B. from Erskine College, Due West, South Caro- lina; M.Ed. from the University of Chat- tanooga, Chattanooga, Tennessee. Mrs. Marjora Fricks has contributed countless hours of service to Dade County High School and the yearbook staff, rep- resenting the faculty and students, feel it an honor to dedicate the last Dade County Yearbook ever to Mrs. Marjora Fricks. 170 Sheila Wooten, president of the Library Assistants Club, presented Mrs. Fricks with a silver tray as a token of their appreciation for all the years she served as their sponsor. Judy Woodyard. editor of the yearbook, presented Mrs. Fricks with a dedication gift at Class Night when the announcement was made. 171 In Appreciation to Our Advertisers Who have helped to make our yearbooks possible for twenty-seven years, Taylor Publishing Company Who has published our yearbooks for twenty-one years, Belmont Studio Who has been our official photographer for sixteen years, Our Faculty and Students Who have really made the yearbooks, for without them there would have been no yearbooks, Parents and Friends Who have guided and encouraged us always. In Reflection We See That. . A Golden Era Ends . . . trf Sweet memories that linger with us Come from old Dade High; Lifelong bonds that can’t be broken Sealed by friendship's tie Proudly she stands on the Reared against the sky Ceasing nover, lasting As the years roll by. Our school life at best is passing With the close of tye 1975 school year the final era in the history of Dade County High School has come to an end. However, individual memories and the influence of this our beloved institution will live on . . . 176 ... A New Era Begins
