Sometimes it goes so slow, but when the realization bursts forth that time is ever present, we begin to think and wonder. We the yearbook staff of 1971 tried to capture one season of time as it progressed ever slowly. As each face of each person is different, so is every season. We now present THE WILDCAT 1971. 2 Dedication Although we, the yearbook staff, are saddened because you and your family are leaving us for greener pastures, we want you to know that we appreciate the leadership you have given us here in Dade County. Dur- ing the four years we have been in high school you have been our principal. In this time we have grown to love and respect you. To express our esteem for you, we, the yearbook staff, dedicate the 1971 edition of THE WILDCAT to you, Mr. James E. Cleveland, our friend. Kathy Tinker receives ap- preciative hug! Mr. Cleveland receives plaque from Editor, Kathy Tinker and Assistant Editor, Kathy Forester. Mr. Cleveland performs one of his many duties. 3 School Board and Superintendent Fur MRS. Cleve- land, we extend a word of thanks and gratitude for the twelve years spent here in Dade County. Thanks and we wish you well! RIGHT - MRS. IMOGENE RYAN Secretary 10 MR. FRANK L. HILL, JR. Social Studies MRS. CRAIG S. CRAWLEY MRS. EDNA R. CLEMONS One of the major needs in today's world is the need for in- formed individuals to think for themselves. The faculty, re- presentative of the field of so- cial studies, tries to give the students enough information to spark the initiative to think for themselves. The students al- most always leave the social studies department with a better understanding of the develop- ment of American institutions and an inspiration to better these developments to the good of humanity. 11 Science and Math MRS. JUDY HULVEY To increase students’ ability to think with mathematical and scientific principles and to stress the appropriate attitudes in both of these fields is one of the most valuable goals the members of the science-math department try to achieve. By stressing the importance of not only knowing the basic skills of math and sci- ente, but also how to use these skills correctly, the students are taught to live better in today's complicated world. MR. WILLIAM R FOUTCH, SR MR JAMES R McCREARY MR BARNETT WILSON 12 MRS. DELILAH WEST MR. P. A. COPELAND The English Department has attempted to develop lan- guage learnings which work together for the student's gen- eral command of his native language, his language per- formance. Experiences with language in operation have been used; the student has been enabled to perceive himself as an organizer of new experiences as he moved into new roles, new situations, and new levels of human ex- perience. Business Education To make it to the top is what most of the people of to- day look forward to in life. To attain this goal they must devel- op such desirable characteristics and work habits as efficiency, courtesy, cooperation, honesty, neatness, accuracy, and the ability to follow instructions and to work with others - things that are stressed in the business de- partment. By using different techniques and initiating com- petition between students, teachers in the business depart- ment make the students want to try to be the best and gives them the hope of making it to the top. MISS LYNDA MEYER 14 The counselor in any school is a key person in seeing that each student has an opportunity to take the subjects best suited to him. Guidance at this point as well as looking forward to the future is very important. Music provides an opportunity for self-expression rarely found in academic subjects and this is cer- tainly encouraged by a sensitive band director. The music program provides a medium for discovering and developing talent and a chance for possible intensive study after high school. Specialties Libraries have changed from from a mere collection of books to become known as media centers. These centers are ex- pected to provide all the ma- terials necessary to meet the demands of the school curricu- lum and to provide pleasure reading. The school library program certainly reflects the philosophy of the school and en- riches all areas of its education- al program. MR. DON HAMMOND MR. BYRON V. BALL II Driver education is a popular curriculum offering because it is such a practical course. Every student who participates satisfies his great ambition to drive the family car with the insatiable desire to someday pos- sess the keys to a car of his very own. MRS. MARJORA FRICKS MR. R. T. CALLAHAM 15 Vocational Vocational Education - a way of learning the basic skills of how to get along in today's world. By putting aside the minute complica- tions of big business, students are taught the basic arts of homemak- ing, carpentry, and career explora- tion. Learning these things high school students are better equipped to face the problems of today at home and in various working situa- tions. MR. LARRY HULVEY MRS. MARTHA PULLEN MR. CHARLES JOHNSTON Gary Breedlove demonstrates the technique of upholstering. 16 Health and Physical Education Students in the physical education classes soon develop groans and limps from sore muscles acquired during the first weeks of P. E. Later they become infected with Coach Ross's competitive spirit, espe- cially after they have learned of his losers run policy. Physical education aids in developing physical fitness, creating favorable attitudes and appreciations including being a good loser, and fostering better use of leisure time. MR. LEED. ROSS MR. The Wildcats, with only one loss, knew that to defeat the unbeaten Eastbrook Mus- tangs would mean an almost certain Region Championship. Although both teams fought hard, the Cats were victorious. The final score was Dade County 14, Eastbrook 8. 21 Autumn Ushers in Football Autumn means football. At least that’s the way it is in Dade County. It's always a great feeling to have the support of the citizens of the community which represents practically all of Dade County. The interest of the student body, the-parents, the alumni, and the friends in the activities of die school boosts us along the way, Anyway, to Dade County, autumn means football and all that goes with it. Head Coach Morrell Holcomb and Assistant Coach Barnett Wilson watch closely the action on the field. 22 Throughout the season the Wildcats showed great desire and determination to win. This re- flected in their 9-2 season record and the region championship. The Cats kept on going many times against unfavorable odds. How- ever, these odds were overcome by cooperative teamwork and strong determination. 23 Varsity Has Best Season Left to right: FIRST ROW - Gary Pell, Wesley Bradford, Jerry Holcomb, Rusty Johnston, Terry Powell, Eddie Mullins, Jesse Wilson, Bryan Page, Bobby Langham. The tiling they didn't know was that this was a superior team. The Cats proved this many times with such performances as almost getting past Pisgah, a class AAA team rated first in Alabama. After the agony of defeat the Cats came back to beat Trion and Eastbrook for the Region 6-B cham- pionship. Important region games such as Trion and Eastbrook made it possible for seven members of the Cats’ team to be placed on the All-Region Team. Other members of the Cats' team won various awards. Few people ever realize what a season means to a cheerleader. To them, a season meant preparation, smiles, and a lot of spirit. Preparation meant going to camp. Superior, excellent, and honorable mention ribbons made their summer worth while. Autumn found the same eight girls ready for action. Win- ning and losing was all part of the game, but winning was the part that they liked best. At the end of the season the same eight girls weren't ready to give up their titles. Graduation claimed three of them whereas the others will be waiting for next year. 26 Promote School Spirit 27 More Football Ninth Grade FIRST ROW - David Christo- pher, Gary Gross, Mark Cash, Ted Rum ley, Reese Morrison, Allen Bobo. Homecoming 1970 To the students, faculty and boosters of Dade County High School, Homecoming is a week of bustle, anticipa- tion, and speculation. This is one of the special weeks that EVERYBODY notices or takes interest in. While the cheerleaders, band, and majorettes work on these special Homecoming routines, the Wildcats practice on. Though it seemed that the week was only beginning, the practice and preparation came to an end. In the cold- ness of the October night, the Wildcats chalked up another victory and Miss Jackie Mason was crowned 1970 Home- coming Queen. ABOVE - Anticipation before half-time is great. But, through the hard work and long practices led by our Coach Lee D. Ross, these forceful, determined boys broke the barrier and became the 1971 6-B Region Champions for the first time in the history of Dade County. Baseball '7 1 The 1971 baseball season was somewhat of a disappoint- ment for the Wildcats. Al- though their record of 7-3 over- all and 4-2 in region play was a respectable one, it fell short of expectation, and short of the goal of the players. One of the things that hampered the Wildcats in their try for a third successive region championship was the injury to three players, all starters. In spite of, or perhaps because of these injuries, the remaining players worked even harder to make the season a successful one. BELOW - The award winners shown in action. The pride the juniors took in trying to please the seniors was evident by the hard work they put forth in decorating. Under the leadership of the class officers and the experienced sponsors much time and effort went into the planning of the prom, their major project of the year.
