152539 Foreword Contents FACULTY SENIORS JUNIORS SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN JUNIOR HIGH ELEMENTARY FAVORITES ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS ADVERTISERS With our school year swiftly closing we pause to catch a final glimpse of the happiness and the friends we've had. Many things have happened this year we shall never forget. We find closer to our hearts the fond memories of this past year at D. H. S. The 1959 WILDCAT is yours. You made it; we preserved it through words and pictures. Superintendent s Message To the Graduating Class of Dade High School. In June, 1959, you will be leaving Dade High School as another graduating class. We hope that our endeavor and your efforts have qualified you to continue your learn- ing if you should go to college. If you do not go to college, we hope you are pre- pared to take your place as good citizens in the communities in which you reside. Our wishes are that you may live long, happy, and useful lives. ii). Principal's Message ■r.-'v • ' v... • . .' -t i ■' «. V In the process of continuing to achieve, there is a common goal for each grad- uate. Each should make a successful adjustment to society and live a full and useful life. This should be accomplished in accordance with the native capacities, interests, and abilities of each individual. Each graduate is different, consequently; the formal educational experience has a different meaning to each of you. You have different aspirations that you will con- tinue to pursue. Success will be built upon past achievements, utilizing certain habits relative to your physical and mental well-being. The many fears and obstacles that will confront you will tend to distract and deviate you from your purpose. You will oppose these deviations with perseverance, courage, and initiative. These attributes are the result of your good study habits, health habits, a disciplined mind, regular attendance, and honesty which have been in the formative process since your entrance into school. An individual cannot live a full and useful life without the knowledge of his subservience to God and without a deep respect for the dignity of his fellowman. MR. D. O. CHUMLEY A.M., M.Ed. Of these forty-six red-eyed, snaggled-toothed youngsters only nine have reached the coveted goal of seniors at Dade High. These are Terrell Gass, Tommy Wheeler, Betty Jo Barton, Riley Puckett, Roy Clark, A. C. Troxtel, Rochelle McBryar, Larry Greene, and Albert Quinton. Our class increased considerably in the next eight years of grammar school. Joyce Castleberry from Rising Fawn joined us in the third grade and Bettye Harrison from Ider joined us in the fourth. Mary Lois Clark from Mount Olive and Joan Stowe from North Dade came to us in the sixth grade. Eddy Joe Selvey joined our ranks in the seventh. In the eighth grade we welcomed students from several other schools. From North Dade came Paul Dugan, Jackie Carroll, Judy Strawn, Joyce Carver, and Patsy Hartline. The ten who joined us from New Salem were Jimmy Allen, Clifford Abbott, David Moore, Jerry Gray, Melvin McKaig, Jerry Kouns, Melba Bradford, Jerry Hughes, Glenda Moore, and Raymond Massey. Jimmy McCarty came from Rising Fawn, and Rufus Ross, from Aiken Junior High in South Carolina. Two more new faces appeared in the freshman class. John Gothard came from Lookout Junior High, and Sherman Moore, from Fort Payne. These students, when sophomores, welcomed Nancy Parker from Central. Our Junior year marked the last half of our high school career. We were engaged in many interesting activities, for instance, the Junior play and the Junior-Senior trip, which was a boat ride. Now we have finally reached our long anticipated goal. As seniors, we lost Joyce Vaughn to Rossville, and Wanda Arnold joined us from Kirkman Technical. The Seniors have participated in many activities this year. Rochelle McBryar was elected as the senior representative on the student council and she was also Home- coming Queen. Melvin McKaig was elected class president. In the Beta Club we have four seniors - Jackie Carroll, Paul Dugan, Rochelle Mc- Bryar, and Joyce Carver. There were eight members of our senior class on the football team this year. They were Larry Greene, Jerry Gray, Tommy Wheeler, Melvin McKaig, Jerry Hughes, Jerry Kouns, David Moore, and Clifford Abbott. Rochelle McBryar represented us as football cheerleader. We had three boys on the basketball team. They were Larry Greene, Tommy Wheeler, and Roy Clark. The three girls that played on the girls' team were Betty Jo Barton, Rochelle McBryar, and Judy Strawn. This completes our history. Every class that follows will have a history of its own. To make it the very best history though, follow these few remaining words of wisdom. Be wise and patient, look to the future while in the details of the present, and keep smiling. Bettye Harrison Joyce Carver Class Prophecy On a cool autumn evening in 1962, as Mrs. Fricks is sitting in her old rocking chair watching television, her mind goes back to the graduating class of 1958-59. She recalls the many separate roads of life her seniors have taken. David Moore is chief engineer on Wagon Triin. As she passes through Trenton, Georgia, she finds an Old Maid’s Home bearing the sign, Bachelors Wanted. operated by Joyce Castleberry and Betty Harrison. Joan Stowe was recently given a screen test for the picture, The Red-Headed Step Child, at the Tivoli Theater. Jerry Gray is now running a bus line from Lookout Mountain to Chattanooga, Tennessee for female passengers only. Patsy Hartline and Jimmy McCarty have found themselves a quiet home away from the noisy seniors. Raymond Massey is playing Down Yonder on his guitar while Clifford Abbott buck dances. A. C. Troxtel and Roy Clark have climbed the ladder to success. They are washing the windows of the Empire State building and have finally reached the top. Melvin McKaig has just been promoted to the professor of Science at Yale University. Joyce Blackstock is running a florist shop. Her favorite flower is the Bachelor's Button. Riley Puckett has moved to California where he sells sun tan lotion to the bathing beauties. He accom- modates his customers with a free application. Charles Albert Quinton is now manager of the Shop-Rite Super Market. Jimmy Allen owns half interest in the Kayo Service Station at New England. Larry Greene is helping Tommy Wheeler build a rocket to the moon. Rosey intends to stay ahead of the Joneses. After a few years of practice on school desks, walls, tables, and piano, Eddy Selvey has become a professional carver. Betty Jo Barton is the basketball coach at Dade County's new gym. Wanda Arnold has acquired a job as a Touch-Up girl in Miller's Beauty Shop. Jerry Hughes is now taking speech lessons from Rufus Ross. This helps strengthen Jerry's voice to sell the Wildcat News. Joyce Carver has recently been made Superintendent of Nurses at Kill or Cure General Hospital. Sherman Moore, the famous athlete from Dade High, has received his cup for being World Middle Weight Champion. John Gothard is still taking life easy. He is manager of the Beauty Sleep Mattress Company. Jerry Kouns is still drinking Lookout Mountain water, trying to grow up. Nancy Parker, Mary Lois Clark and Judy Strawn are starring as the Three Unholy Ones in Jackie Carroll's and Paul Dugan's new broadway hit, The Teenage Gansters. In bringing an end to Mrs. Fricks’ dream she hears the announcement on television that Rochelle McBryar has been crowned Miss America of 1962. Nancy Parker - Rochelle McBryar Class Will Judy Strawn, Mary Lois Clark, and Nancy Parker leave their ability to get in and out of more trouble in one year than any one else in school to Barbara Warren, Mary Jane Price, and Carol Ryan. GOOD LUCK, GIRLS! Jerry Gray leaves his secret loves to Rex Blevins and hopes Rex will have better luck than he has. Rochelle McBryar leaves her sweet personality to JoAnn Steele, and Jackie Carroll leaves her title as most talented to Nancy Crumley. Sherman Moore leaves his title as Wise Crack Champion to Russell Blevins, and Rufus Ross leaves his long hours of study to Stoney Townsend. Wanda Arnold leaves her blonde hair to Shirley Sullivan and hopes it is as becoming to Shirley as it is to Wanda. Bettye Harrison leaves her height to LaVerne Powell to use on the basketball court next year. Raymond Massey leaves his ability to be in the graduating class for two years to Bobby Raulston, and Jimmy McCarty leaves his shyness toward girls to Connie Broom. Riley Puckett leaves his title as class flirt to Bobby BaKer, and Tommy Wheeler leaves his curly hair to Gene Hixon. Larry Green leaves his ability on the football field to Larry Moore, and Clifford Abbott leaves his buck dancing to Rayford Hammond. Joyce Blackstock leaves her witty personality to Nancy Steele, and Joyce Castleberry leaves her quietness to Gail Daniel. Patsy Hartline leaves her ability to get along with other people to Deloris Tatum, Francis Chadwick, and Mildred Blansit. Jimmy Allen leaves his long legs to Jimmy Foster, and Roy Clark leaves his neatness to Eddie West. Melba Bradford and Glenda Moore leave their office work to Billie Tinker. Joyce Carver leaves her ability to get along with the teachers to Ruby Blevins. Paul Dugan leaves his ability to stay on the honor roll to Joe Lee Tatum; John Gothard leaves his weight to Burrell Hill. David Moore, Jerry Hughes leave their abilities in American History to Billy Konrad. Jerry Kouns leaves his height to Larry Konrad, and Melvin McKaig leaves his devotion to one girl for one year to Grover Geddie. Eddie Selvey leaves his white shoes to Douglas Stephens, and Charles Albert Quinton leaves his mustache to Jimmy Gothard. Joan Stowe leaves her red socks to Nanette Daniel.
