MARIA VALENTE AFS STUDENT When I received the notice lid come to the United States, I was really scared. I didn't know how will be my life here, my family, friends and school. I wanted so bad to make a lot of friends, but it seemed hard to me, because we couldnit understand each other. But, after I came, met my family and started getting acquainted with my new friends, I realized that I was at home again. I do know that now I have here big families, including my friends: One is in Brazil, another is here in U.S. In Brazil, there are 5 persons in my family. My dad, who works for our federal government, my mom, who is a housewife, one brother, who is 23 years old, one sister 19 years old and I. I was a senior in Brazil and I was study- ing to be an elementary teacher. Like the majority of teenagers I like music, parties, sports, to make friends, to travel and learn new and different things. Of course I don't like lies, sadness, snobby people, in short, everything that can hurt another person. Here in the U.S. I lived with the Stone family, and dad,', momH, Jill, Kathy, Pam, and my little brother , Mike, couldn't be nicer than they were. I felt myself exactly like at home and I really think that there are no words capable to express how much I like them and I thank them. As a Senior at D. C. Everest Ilearned to love and cheer for our great Evergreen teams and to me there is no school better than ours. I didn't find too many differences in the Brazilian way of life and the American one. It can be understood if we remember that we both are people who want to give the best of our lives in order to get the best. The friendship that I found in each of you made my life here the most wonderful thing I ever had and I'm sure that I'll never forget anything that I learned or the friends I made. It aims to promote student in- terest in the foreign exchange program as well as to help raise part of the funds neces- sary to bring a foreign student to Everest. Tag days and a used book sale enabled the club to contribute its share of money, and this along with money raised by the adult chapter and contributions from various com- munity organizations brought Maria Eugenia Valente, our first exchange student, to Everest.
