DEBATE ROW ONE: Bonnie Van Lieshout, Kathy McNamara, Keith Martin, Steven Schmidtke, Joe Larson, Martha Warpehoski, Ann Sternberg, Mrs. Stanke, Advisor. ROW TWO: Harvey One of the challenges of a competitive, realistic society is the ability to analyze a situation, take a stand on the issues, and try to convince others to accept your conclu- sions. Debate offers students a challenging and unique learning experience of this sort. Each year a controversial proposal is presented to high schools in the state. Students who wish to debate must devote time and effort to the study of this proposal, and develop their views on it. The debate squad travels to tournaments held throughout the state to debate with stu- dents of other schools. Here, when they must face other people with opposing views, the debaters put their argumentative ability to the test. In a series of timed speeches they attempt to convince the judge, who decides which are the better debaters. It certainly gives the debaters a sense of achievement when they come home from a tournament with a high rating-especially if a trophy is included.
