The Curtis High School bowling team fought its way against strong opposition to a tie for the Staten Island P.S.A.L. bowling championship. Sparkecl by three returning lettermen, Bruce Frimet, Ed Doxy and Frank Gambaro, and aided by newcomers Ted Poritz, and Lloyd Schutzman, Mr. Ryan had hopes of taking the Island champj- onship and almost accomplished his aim. Next year, because two of this year's team will be returning, Coach Ryan hopes to have a city championship team. il 1 I KNEELING: Robert DeMasi, Co-captain, Valerio Bruno, Captain, Robert Myers, Co-captain. Under the direction of Mr. Krongold it gave a satisfactory accounting of itself. Everyone concerned with soccer at Curtis is optimistic about the future. This year's team began as an inexperienced but hard working group and by the end of the season it was a highly co-ordinated and successful unit. All but four of the starting team will be back next year and this more experienced squad should turn in a good record.

The team, ably coached by Mr. Christianson and captained by Hank Murphy, placed well in all the interscho- lastic runs at both Van Cortlandt Park and Clove Lakes. The highlight of the season was the New York Public School Champi- onship run in which Curtis finished fourth in a group of thirty-six schools. The top individual effort of the season was turned in by Larry Edelman who finished first in the Staten Island Public School Championship at Clove Lakes Park held last autumn. The Curtis track team also made a fine showing in all the New York City track meets. The team was paced by sprinters Mike Brennan, Gerald Schwartz, Gary Schwartz, Harold Knudsen, Hank Murphy, and John Lilley. Leon Selman and Larry Edelman led the distance runners. fx I fi 3 I 0 ,J ii . . f 1 1 L. .1 f' ' . If 1 -V , I fl? Al-

li .lerry Lazar, Captain, George S, Johnson, Charles Agar, Stan Stearin, Bob Hanley. The golf team, coached by Mr. Gaffney, has made an excellent record during the past years, consistently winning the Staten Island P.S.A.L. crown. The competition for the city championship is more rugged but Curtis has fared well, reach- ing the finals every time for the last thirteen years. Last year, for the first time since 1955, our divot- diggers came through and we won the city title, defeating our arch-rival, Bayside. Coach Gaffney has high hopes for the coming season. Returning lettermen Captain Jerry Lazar and Fred Brandkamp will lead the team in its bid to defend the title. Many hopeful devotees of the sport will be competing in their effort to cap- ture the remaining three starting positions. Mr. Gaffney U
