Once again the Curtis High School swimming team put in another fine season, winning a ma- jority of their meets although hindered by having to travel to eight of these contests. The veterans of the team, reinforced by some newcomers, made a winning squad possible. I L Returning as seniors this year are Captain Roger Cuyarg the breast stroke duo of Bob Greve and Bill Siegler, long distance man, Ronald MacLachlan, back stroke ace, Dove Winrock, sprinters, Bill Mohan, Tom Bell, and Tom Mc- Carthy. Coach Richard Mudgett's Curtis tennis M team for 1959, built around five letter men, Robert Rabinowitz, Jay Westermeier, Sonny Finkelstein, Bruce Struthers and Lloyd Schutzman, has every hope of sur- passing its record for 1958. New material is good and spirit is high. Newcomers in- clude Lewis Mandell, Bob Follit, Irv Farber, Efrem Sigel, Harold Alexander and Tommy Altman. Last year the team had an overall rec- ord of nine wins out of fourteen matches. This year's team should be even stronger and is looking forward to not only a clean sweep on Staten Island but also a good showing in the city. FRONT: Jay Westermeier, Robert Rabinowitz. The Curtis High School Warriors, coached by Mr. Bert Levinson, former Curtis cager star, defended the P.S.A.L. championship title which they gained last season. Starting with the initial contest of this current series, the Red and White tallied five consecutive wins. But when the cagers returned to the court for the first contests of the new year, they were defeated by Port Richmond and lost a squeaker to New Dorp. Seniors Ray Ratkowski, captain and returning letterman, KNEELING Larr And n R d R tk k' Al L d STANDIN l Kevin Carroll, and Tom Burrell, a newcomer, have been clearing the boards for the Warriors. Returning junior lettermen Jack Tracy and Frank Fernandez have displayed excellent form in man- aging backcourt affairs, while 6'2 Vin DePeppo has worked in the pivot slot. THIRD ROW: Gary Elia, Donald Mohrmann, Paul Roberts, Jeffrey Bash, Harold Knutsen, John Ulrich, William Keene, Thomas Selden, Barry Kessler, The Curtis High School cross country team completed a highly successful sea- son. The team, ably coached by Mr. Christianson and captained by Hank Murphy, placed well in all the interscho- lastic runs at both Van Cortlandt Park and Clove Lakes. The highlight of the season was the New York Public School Champi- onship run in which Curtis finished fourth in a group of thirty-six schools. The top individual effort of the season was turned in by Larry Edelman who finished first in the Staten Island Public School Championship at Clove Lakes Park held last autumn. The Curtis track team also made a fine showing in all the New York City track meets. The team was paced by sprinters Mike Brennan, Gerald Schwartz, Gary Schwartz, Harold Knudsen, Hank Murphy, and John Lilley.
