Shakespeare For four long years we have been preparing for the parts we are destined to play when we leave Curtis and go out on our own. Through the unfailing and devoted efforts of all those around us, we are now ready to take our places in the world-a world which Shakespeare so appropriately pictured as a huge stage filled with actors playing their various roles. But we shall never forget those four years we spent in rehearsal here at Curtis and so, in memory of the past and in anticipation of the future, we offer our 1956 Yearbook- Opening Night. fe'g.L' 5' -' , k .--,x,Lc ' J I px' gEL ' ' N ff -.,,- :nh YK Q- .,.. ..,.. 2-Q5 CQ ,E SQ' Ll? ,L B-B-' lee, 551 gb ,,- Q.: A-Q 1 3' ti - L ,:... 45+ K W ,fy Y p- N' I 4 it - f X , N f E v 5 1 we 4 'QS 3 A X ' X. During the day the halls resounded with many of the traditional carols sung by the Christmas choir costumed as angels, Under the able and efficient leadership of Mr. Wilhelm we are sure that our Curtis High School Chorus will have a future as successful as its illustrious past. Every administrative office in the school depends on the competence of the student aides, who perform iobs from running errands for Mr. Corbett to operating the Lost and Found for Mr. Rosenman. They deliver messages, type, file, check, double check and find, they alphabetize, arrange, and re-arrange to help maintain the normal, efficient operation of the school that couldn't exist without their help. HCCOUlTl'lllG F E E Room 352 the Secretarial Studies Office, has a trained, efficient clerical staff which performs the multitudinous duties necessary to keep the stenography, typing, business law, accounting, and business training classes in top running order. Mr. Neinstein, chairman of the department, is justly proud of his loyal and eager staff. Their duties include typing, mimeographing, and filing, but do not stop with these necessary activities for they are always available for any of the other services that such a varied department needs. Have you ever wondered why nauseous chemical odors never seep through our halls, or why an accidental blast never rocks our school to its foundations? There's a good reason, of course, for our peaceful existence. The Chemistry Lab squad is on duty to see that there's never any mixup in deliveries of supplies. This dedicated group keeps the new Chemistry Lab in apple pie order. Without them, we doubt that the Science Department could function at all! COLOR GUHRD At the beginning of every assembly, Curtisites start off the program by singing the Star Spangled Banner and soluting the flag. This is an important ritual in our school life. The job of carrying the flag into assembly and serving as its guards is an honored one. Every year three girls are chosen to fill this position. Instead, the traffic moves swiftly so that all students can reach their classes on time. But the duties of the marshals do not end with traffic control, for they also are on duty in all corridors and at all exits so that orderly conditions prevail at every moment of the school day. The season got off to a bad start and misfortunes seemed to plague us all the way through. On Turkey Day, cheered on by thousands of fans, we played our best game of the season, but against the more powerful and more experienced New Dorp Centrals, the White Warriors were again beaten and we lost our last game ofthe season. All through the season the team was hindered by iniuries, the more serious of them being when Ariay Godston hurt his knee and was forced to sit out some of the games, and when Charlie Molway, suffering from a broken arm, retired for the entire last half of our campaign. , ,, I A ,- ni A . ,K ,Vie ,, ,- gf ' 1 f ,, ff mv ,- va? , , ' if ' ' 5' ' ' A .,. The whole team contributed to our success with many lower termers proving their skill and their value along with the experienced Seniors. Captain Charlie Enger and Charles Wright scored many points for the team in the IOO yard backstroke. Ted Gamble again turned in a wonderful iob of diving-he placed first in almost all of the meets he participated in, and our relay team, Vito Fosella, David Blumin, Ernie LaFlamme, and Carl Raichle was rarely beaten. The team finished the season in the 5th slot of the Brooklyn-Richmond P.S.A.L. and next year hopes to do even better. Even though 5 or more of the team are graduating in June, with the experience that the others are getting this year, and with the prospect of new materiel to come, Curtis can look forward to even better seasons. Any boy can try out for the team, the only qualification necessary to make it is that he must swim the 50 yard freestyle in 3l seconds or less. Shllllllll HG K I Coach Harry O'Brien keeps turning out winning basketball teams and this year was no exception! To date the record is seven and three. Curtis opened its season defeating Tottenville and St. Peters before it ran aground, losing to Port Richmond. The Warriors then easily dispatched with Augustinian Academy and again, Tottenville. After Christmas, Curtis was host in the Christmas Tree Tournament. ln the only game that the Varsity played it defeated Vermont's Rutland High School team. The holidays must have been too much for our heroes for they dropped the next two games to New Brunswick High School and our neighbor, McKee. We got back on the winning track again, however, beating St. Peters and a surprisingly good Augustinian team. Besides the returning veterans, Seniors Polgar, Miller, Corresel and Burke all have been fighting for the well deserved wins, Ken Gyrmathy is the only non-senior on the team. The Varsity is co-captained by Richie Meeks and Jerry Prehn. Under the coaching of Mr. O'Brien, the Junior Varsity also had its usual winning record. Captained by Randy Brooks, their record so far is five wins and one loss.
