The emphasis has been on the informal side, so that you will have a record of the boys and girls and of the men and women whom you know so well, not as they are usually photographed, but as you like to remember them. Probably nowhere but in America could such a record be made. At least, at the present moment, nowhere but in America could it be truthfully pictured that boys and girls of your age are spending four years with their teachers, in freedom, with mutual self- respect, for achievement and growth. This is what we mean when we say 'four way of lifef? It is this way of life, we believe, that produces the finest fruits of personality and character. It is for this way of life that we fight. 277. . The East Siders put up a game battle but were overcome by the Staten Island boys, 12-7. The seventh and final game was an intersectional contest. The team from St. Gabriel's High School, :cout Pennsylvania way, faced the Curtis football squad in one of the most evenly matched games in the history of Curtis football. But the Saints and the ucity slickersf' as the Curtis players were called by the jesting Pennsylvanian boys, fought to a scoreless deadlock! The White Wfarriors of Curtis remained undefeated in sixteen starts extend- ing over a period of three years! The praises that should be sung about the individual members of the 191111 football team would fill up many pages, but lack of space forbids this. We can- not, however, pass on without singling out a few of the Curtis stalwarts who gave their all for dear old Curtis. First there is Captain Ralph ufludgen DiStasio, a faith- ful leader and a brilliant quarterback. Marty Jurkops, a veteran of three years, comes second, having earned a position on every all-scholastic team in the metropoli- tan area. Then there is Tony Caeta, running guard and captain of the 1942 squad, who played a bang-up game all season. The first-string forward wall was completed with Dick Bergendale, Bill D7Eugenio, Tony Ferrara and Dan Monohan. The backiield was called the best in the history of Curtis by Coach Sal Somma. Curtis rooters will never forget the power running of uRedn Rycowitch and uBig Johnn Siano, the bril- liant ballacarrying of Vinnie Castellucci and quick-stepping Tom Fawcett. Special mention should be made of Bob Spamer whose great improvement in play and scholastic record won him the trophy awarded annually to the most deserving player by Coach Somma. The reserves were all capable and showed their ability on more than one occasion. We would like to express our appreciation to Trainer Tex Dawson who has kept the Curtis football players in good physical condition for so many years. And finally, we can do no more than pay a humble tribute to Coach Sal Somma whose patience and expert advice piloted the team to its championship. Coach Somma has left the field of friendly battle, the gridiron, to join the United States Naval Forces in another kind of battle, the battle for freedom and democracy. We wish him as much success with the Navy as with his championship football teams at Curtis. BASKETBALL The Curtis Basketball Team Won the Staten Island championship and reached the play-off games at Madison Square Carden for the third successive year under the winning direction of Coach Harry 0'Brien. To do this, the Curtisites had to overcome the fine Tottenville team in the lsland play-off, This game was said to be the most exciting of the season, Curtis winning 35-34. The team played seventeen games, six of which were league games. The only league game lost was the first contest with Tottenville. Curtis lost to Andrew Jackson High School at the Garden before thousands of students from school who journeyed en masse to witness the game. The highlight of the season was a three-day excursion to South Jersey. The Curtis team defeated the Tri-county All-stars at Wfoodstown 55-22. They also played the Merchantsville High School team but lost 34-22. During the trip to South Jersey, the boys had a great deal of fun and unusual experiences. Coach Harry OiBrien arranged for the boys to stay at farms. They drove tractors, milked cows, pitched hay and did other farm chores. For many boys, this was their first taste of farm life. At mid-season, the team lost captain Ralph Moscato and Gerry Ginsburg through graduation. This was a serious blow, but Doug Vllatson who was elected to succeed Moscato as captain, and Danny McGrath carried most of the burden for the rest of the season. Walter Majeski and Al Bovino also demonstrated their abilities when the going was the toughest. The other players, ,lim McGrath, John Sammon, Vin Lawless and Jay Quintana were always willing and capable to do their part to relieve the regulars. BASEBALL The 1942 Baseball Team, headed by captain Al Bovino, opened its activities this spring with many new faces in the lineup. The absence of veterans was compensated for by many promising newcomers. Curtis partisans, proud of the spirited '42 team, saw the Curtis boys lose two games early in the season and then come from he- hind to defeat the impressive teams from Tottenville and Port Richmond and win the eighth consecutive championship of Staten Island for Curtis. Coach Harry O,Brien, the sage of Curtis base- ball, attributed the losses to weak hitting. Defensively. however. the team was topsg it was well drilled and played heads-up ball at all times. SWIMMING In the January graduation, the Curtis Swimming Team lost almost half of its veterans. Coach Robert Gaffney said, however, that the team had a good season. MMr. Cf' as Coach Gaffney is known affectionately to the boys on the team, predicted a bright future for some of the lower termers who were a match even for the older mermen. Some of the veterans who helped to make the ,441-742 season a success were Jim Mange, ace backstroker, Bay Hegel, James MBim7' Vifheeler, Bob Gleckner and Boy Spangler. Buddy Weber and Al Esposito were outstanding in the diving department. TRACK The Curtis Track Team with twenty-four members had one of its most successful seasons in recent years. Coach Carl Jung spent long hours on the Curtis field with the tracksters, teaching the boys the finer points of track competition. The team was headed by captain Arthur Patterson. a top-notch miler. Vliallace Murray, diminutive Curtis track star, blazed across the finish line in first place in a mile race. among competitors representing some of the leading high schools of the city at the Bronx Coliseum oval. This feat established Wallace as one of the foremost high school milers in the cityl Other outstanding mem- bers of the track team are veterans George Yater. Robert Young and Bob Cook. Among the sprinters are Bob Messner, Warren Barcalow. Herb Dawson, George Pfeiffer and Arthur Stamler. In the field events. Tony Morelli and Costa Tesnakis are the high-jump experts. and Tony Ferrara. Anthony Caeta and Edward Pfaff, the shotputters. GIRLS HOCKEY In the midst of Curtis' vast field may be seen a shivering group of girls huddled together and Watching their chattering teammates whack each otheris shins in their attempts to get a skittish ball. It is the fall hockey season and the girls are competing in inter-term tournaments for the hockey champion- ships. The wings lean disconsolantly on their hockey sticks. Then, as the ball rolls to the alley, they're off, tearing down the length of the field, only to miss the goal. However, under the direction of Mrs. Stone, many fundamental techniques are learned and the goal becomes less elusive. A There's an art to everything, and Basketball is by no means an exception. After all, anyone can shoot at a basket, but how many can really take aim and get the ball in? Practice makes perfect, so the girls, ably encouraged by Miss Ker, eventually master the guard and forward positions. After midterms, the girls start their inter-team tournaments. Teams are picked and the players are awarded positions ac- cording to their merit. Rivalry is keen, but throughout, the girls display a fine sense of sportsmanship. l GIRLS BASKET BI-LLL L V ,, ,V ,ATM ,qw ,xy V., A, W K WATER BALLET Curtis adds another event to its fast growing list of extra-curricular activities-The Water Ballet-a spectacular program put on annually by the water-minded boys and girls of Curtis. In this yearis presentation, a variety of Hgures were executed by the swimmers, among which were the star and fountain formations. Several humorous features were also part of the program. Au obstacle race in which boys wore nightgowns and carried candles brought forth roars of hilarious laughter. An old-fashioned picnic at the beach was staged as another main event, in which bathing suits of the gay nineties were worn by the participants. Exhibition diving was performed by Jimmy Barnes, and at the close of the performance, the boys, aroused to gay spirits, submerged their good-natured coach, Mr. Gaffney, into the pool. The huge success of the Vffater Ballet is due to the able leadership of Miss Ripley and Mr. Gaffney. Together with the mermaids and mermen, these two teachers put on a never-to-be-forgotten spectacle. ittlitt ll txtttttlllii An old Curtis custom which occurs year after year is the Christmas Alumni Reunion. Former Curtis students look forward to it as a time when they can come back to their Alma Mater to see their former teachers and friends, and to reminisce about hthose good old daysn. At last year's reunion, aside from the usual college crowd, there were many boys wearing uniforms of the Various branches of our armed forces. As usual, tea and cookies were served in the foyer while teachers and alumni chatted about old times and new. As an en- joyable finish to the day, the old students strolled down to the boys, gym, not for exercises this time, but for dancing. 'S-A. 'Twas the night before Christmas-Wait a Minute! 'Twas a few minutes before the Christmas pageant. Thats itl A puff of powder. a dab of lip stick. and a comb through the hair. and the pageant was on. With a medieval castle as its background, girls and boys in costume sang and danced. Authentic carols of the 12th century were sung by the Curtis Choir under the direction of George S. Dare of the music department. The duel between St. George and the Turk was an exciting and hilarious part of the pageant. The click- ing swords and the final blow provided breathless entertainment for the entire assembly. At the finale the cast formed into a procession and marched along the aisles of the auditorium as they sang the last of the Christmas carols. Swing and Sway JANUARY Throughout the Upper Senior Register Rooms, heads were seen hent over attractive circulars. Pencils were taken out and the upper-classmen signed with the flourishing scrawl of Seniors. Thus the announcement of the first Senior Class Party was heralded. The girls were cautioned to dress in a collegiate manner. Vllhat were we in for? When the long awaited day arrived, a hevy of students could he seen rushing towards the boys, gym. Soon the fun began. The Seniors proved their versatility by their rendition of the various popular dance steps. However this was soon for- gotten as the square dancing was introduced. From a Virginia Reel the couples went into a Grand March. Led by the class olhcers, the Seniors proved that the floor could hold them. Then, a circle was formed and the students energetically went through a Paul Jones. Durinigg this lively session, the odor SENIOR PARTIES of food was detected. Hefreshments were served by the mighty football team, who had had excellent experience in guarding. More dancing followed and then obstacle races took the spotlight. Laughter and shouting accompanied the participants. Vllin- ners were awarded baby prizes and then forgotten as the beatgone-two-three-kick claimed the audience. The Conga, as performed bythe entire body, provided much entertainment. As the line gradually diminished to the last strains of the music, jitterbugs uswungil out in true spirit, itil the tune of Home Sweet Home fnttingly put an encl to the merrymaking. One and all looked forward to the next Senior Party. The second Party, although not as good as its predecessor, was another event to be added to the Red Letter Days of the Senior Calendar. Two b y Two ll ii PHUIVI November twenty-ninth was the hig nightl Crownup for a while, young couples in gala attire streamed into the boys' gymnasium, which had been magically transformed into an undersea paradise. Mermaids and fish of all sizes and colors, dangling from the ceiling, and seagreen crepe paper on the wall made the illusion complete. Girls in evening gowns and young men in tuxedoes, danced to the melodious music of the orchestra, while members of the faculty, resplendent in their formal attire, also enjoyed themselves immensely. The highlight of the prom was the grand march, led by our principal, Mr. Avent. During the evening, soft drinks and assorted cookies were served. When the last strains of music had ceased, and the hands of the clock pointed to twelve, the festive group left reluctantly, knowing that it would never forget that night of nights. JUNE SENIUR PARTY The June Senior Party, held on Friday the thirteenth. had as its amusing and challenging theme. Good Luck . Black cats, often thought of in connection with Friday the thirteenth. decorated the walls of the boysi gym. Dominic Massa. permanent class treasurer and an ahle master of ceremonies, led the willing and fun-loving seniors in the dance elimination contest and in various games. Six of the more daring students en- tered the milk drinking contest, which was equally enjoyed hy the audience as well as the participants. A novel event was the grand march under the ladder. Of course, everyone joined the snake-like Conga chain until it completely encircled the gym. Swing and sweet records in a julie box provided the students with music for dancing. The famished seniors devoured the hot dogsu. sandwiches, and punch before the last call to come and get iti' was heard. The Good Luck party of the June graduating class was, for everyone who al- tended, a festive occasion. FIELD DAY Wllhough we are met in what seems to be a military formationf' Mr. John M. Avent, our principal, said, MIT is good to know that we are not preparing to destroy the happiness of others, but to build happiness. for our- selvesf' The occasion was our annual Field Day, at which, members of the different classes competed in various SIJOITS CVClltS, As usual, the class of '42 came out on top, compiling a score of forty seven and a half points. The mass drill events, which had been revived this year, thrilled the spectators. More than 1,300 girls in gym outfits demonstrated three dances with beautiful pre- cision. Members of the Curtis apparatus team displayed their ability on the parallel bars. Attired in dark trousers and white shirts, the boys went through two sets of impressive drill exercises and pyramids, Throughout, the lusty cheers of all and the gay playing of the school band showed that the gathering was really one of joy. W ls GRADUATION A hush fell over all in Feldman Hall as the graduates marched in to the strains of Cod of Our Fathers . Their faces portrayed suppressed excitement and a hit of stage fright. The invocation. a rustle of skirts. the click of seats. and the Graduation Exercises had started. The program fol- lowed in the usual manner with the welcoming address, the presentation of special awards, music by the orches- tra. singing by the graduates. and the message to the graduates. But, this program was special, for this was their graduation for which they had worked four yearsg these were members of their own class receiving awardsg the words spoken were directed particularly to them. It was a joyous occasion, yet a sad one, for who can tell of the memories and the thoughts of parting in the minds of the graduates. And then, came the most solemn part of the program: the individual conferring of diplomas by our principal, Mr. John M. Avent. Midst the applause and the proud and happy smiles of their parents and teachers, the graduates walked to the platform to receive the coveted symbol. Suddenly, the exercises were over, and the graduates marched out to be greeted by teachers, family and friends, and then to return home to celebrate this special occasion. K zititii fs: az az YUWW ll A FU H-STAB ANNUAL THE. MEMBERS of the BJH college organization would very much like to extend their sincere congratulations for a book of distinctive and distinguished merit. lt has been a great pleasure to work with the 194-2 staff, to collaborate in the planning and creation of the book, and to go on record as appreciating the fine spirit and splendid co- operation which was so manifest at all stages of the work. For more than forty years, many of America's most notable yearbooks have come from the BJH presses. It is a service to college yearbook staifs that has been augmented in many im- portant waysg an experience of constantly mounting value to those whose classmates entrust them with the challenge of making their book superior to all the ine books that have preceded it. And it is because we so keenly relish the opportunity to have a part in the acceptance of that challenge that we look forward to working with future yearbook staffs with the same fervor, the same right hand of assistance, that made the creation of this excellent annual such a mutually gratifying experience.
