Great deliberation was given to the matter this year, and from an excellent field of nominations emerged two very strong and capable administrators. The yearbook dedication committee felt that each was an easy and natural winner, and thus the committee saw fit to dedicate their yearbook to both of these Curryites, Mrs. LeBaron and Mr. Hastings. Both persons have served Curry well in a number of ways. The Class of 1978 wishes them well, and thanks them from the bottom of our hearts for the several ways they have helped us throughout our Curry duration. Mrs. Helen LeBaron Unfortunately most of us don ' t get to meet Mrs. LeBaron until our bills don ' t get paid on time and she calls us in to see her. We go slinking in there, only to find a women who is as helpful as time allows her to be. She ' s not one to waste time with us. She has no time to waste. She comes in early most every day, and is usually the last to leave . . . and she takes work home with her. She has run the Bursars Office for many years, with really little help. When you see her in the office she is always scampering about . . . she is so busy! A vital member of the Curry Community, she has finally been given some help with the addition of Mr. Marchi. But since Curry is ever growing, the work load will too, and she ' ll be as busy as ever. The Class of 1978 thanks her for her hard work and dedication to Curry College. Mr. Ned Hastings When a crisis happened in 1977 and the students needed someone to talk to (during the great leadership turmoil), Ned Hastings stepped in, and filled the void. When the students cried for a voice in how the dorms were run, Ned Hastings stepped in to moderate an all College forum. When Dean Fred Kirschenmann resigned, an Acting Dean was needed, and Ned Hastings was a natural choice because of his knowledge, and overwhelming good sense. He has filled that position well enough that some would like to see him become the Dean, not the Acting Dean. Just another thing. Ned Hastings is the first person to be so honored m I this manner twice. His first time was the 1968 Curryer dedication. Perhaps Curry will be lucky enough to have him here still for another decade, for he is a great person, academically and socially. Maybe he ll get the dedication in 1988 tod ' He has shown fairness, especially to students. He has shown ability to handle problems. He has shown the students that yes students are the first concern of the College (but they can ' t have everything!) tudent life ] f J ill H == . «•% . i«  ' ,i !f B ' ' • ' .% l:ft i -■mammmmimmmmmm ilSfi Si [iiti ji . hhw , . -i ; I ' HMgnKr r 1h ' - - • iiTiaBiftfsax;, .- ' , .-assuwi-.; J Casino Night ' 77 And The Winner Is NEW WAVE IN LISHED EROTICA. Talent cascaded onto the stage of Foard Auditorium on the night of October 15th, entertaining us with style and charm. Bob Tomasello and Mark Cember were a pretty slick duo; Marty Casey strutted his stuff in fine Elvis style; Rich Holbrook crooned his way into our hearts; Joelyn Harden captivated us with her fancy footwork; Christy Johnson and Joyce Herling among others were a marvelous contribution to this extravaganza which could have not become reality without the gifted sounds of Andy Chessin and his band. Star Wars exploded onto the stage as choreographed by Gregory Little. All in all it was a night to remember. This page reserved for your own personal use. C.C. was right in the spir- it of things! Homecoming ' 77 was a wonderful occasion which afforded everyone a chance to celebrate and socialize in high style. This is a- play about Gregory, Jim, Christie, Karen, David, Peter, P iffce, and Alice and their encounter with the magic of the Godspell. They hav made the libretto which is based on the Godspell i of St. Matthew uniquely their own. t The pantomimes were j, . Just as the original production tried to bring new life to our hackneyed understanding of the Godspell, so have those who worked on this production sought to find a new and meaningful way to tell the story. In the original production the action took place in a chainlink enclosure with clown characters. In this production the action takes place in the street and the characters are caricatures of reality. Can the Godspell happen in our streets? Can the Godspell happen today? Can the Godspell breakaway the caricatures of ourselves? During the big blizzard of 78 the Senior class sponsored the annual Horseracing Night. Due to the storm there was just a small turnout, but was much fun for those who could make it, as the Seniors hosted the event they brought to Curry for the last time. Blood Drives Each year when the Count Dracula ' s of the world come to call Curry Students can ' t wait to be lucky victims. A case in point is the annual Red Cross Blood Drives. This page depicts the students giving blood, and eating (and drinking) goodies afterwards. Because of the cafeteria, it is rumored, some come and give blood just to have a decent snack afterwards. A real worry might be that of the blood given, 99% might be full of alcohol. Oh well, happy drinking! The Senior Dinner was held in October in order for the seniors to get together, have a little wine, and hear a little about what they were supposed to be doing to get ready for the big day: commencement. After the wine, some of them were far from serious, but sobered up under informative talks from Dean Hastings and Dean Jackson. Real worthy words of advice were giv- en by guest Barbara Fournier. Joanne Roderiques also informed the seniors on how the class was to proceed onwards . . . Top left: Class President Joanne Roderiques, top right: Dean Jackson, above: Barbara Fournier. Curry College Cafe Cuisine Ah, the multitude of choices this place has to offer. In The Busy j Life Senior Class President Joanne Roder- iques lead a hectic and busy life throughout her Curry career. Various times she was a House Director, a Resident Advisor, a yearbook section Editor, Dean ' s List member, and a member of the Alexander Graham Bell Society. Her senior year was probably busiest as she lead her class through last minute fund raising events, fights with the Senate (for SIP money), and preparations for gradu- ation; along with the most expensive k and best senior week ever at Curry. These two pages help depict a typical day, in a way, but are not really re- flective on how much work she put in to everything. Of Joanne Roderiques After a quick lunch Joi checks in to help sell Se: Week tickets . . . ' A quick jog to help stay fit before dinner . . . Joanne, as President, did much work for the Senior Class, and did a great job on getting the Seniors to work and contribute to class pro- jects. Of course she had a great class to lead, for a leader is only as good as the group they have to lead. A great leader and a great class compliment each other, and that was the story of the Class of 1978. ater has a Commencement Committee tjng, here with Jj|||| n Carl Cooper, and with class VP liBiii Jlulfcs . . . and a look on the Senior Week ticket counter held during dinner. A great steamship roast beef meal followed a wine and cheese hour, and then we watched the awards ceremony. Capping the evening was the announce- ment of Dean Hastings as the Person of the Year, presented by Mrs. Janet Kirs- chenmann (wife of former Dean Kirs- chenmann who was unable to attend to give this award). Once again, we went to a crowded, full bar happy hour in room 1 19, and then down to a good dinner at the cafeteria. At right, celebration committee chairpersons Bunny Aronson and Dave Transom confer. Below: President Hafer (with his wife) holds up the Resolution presented to him by Senate President Bill Round. The night featured the exotic dishes of foreign lands, for- eign dances and rit- uals, and a modern disco dance. One of the best cultural events on campus every year, it is put on by the Interna- tional Club. Field Day: The i Olympies r-i , ■J Uip The Men ' s Governing Board put together a fantastic array of events which they called The Olympics . The events included tug of war, Softball, volleyball, beer, more beer, and other events such as foot races. Everyone had a real blast, including all those folks who got all muddied up in the tug of war! A great way to help wrap up the year. Dr. Hafer is moving to the new position of Chancellor. Members of the Presidential Search Committee included Seniors Gretchen Baker, Joanne Roderiques, Kevin O ' Connor; along with Ned Hastings, Fran Kohak, Bruce Steinberg, alumni Allan DesRosiers and Greg Galvin, and trustees Dresser, Herb Greif. Richard Kelley, and Dr. Richard Lord. Dr. Hafer, the Curry President most responsible for what Curry is today, was given a standing ovation by the enthused crowd in room 119. The Student Senate controls the entire student body via student voices on College committees, and more importantly by controlling the application of the student activity fees. The 15th Senate was lead by Ellie Carabello after Kevin O ' Connor resigned early in the fall. The ISth ' s legacy includes most importantly its passing into law the Calendar and Programming Board, as an alternative to the Social Committee versus Fine Arts junket of the past. The C P Board will enable future Curry generations of students to enjoy more wide-spread cultural events, more sophistication, more enjoyable-educational entertain- ment, with less booze-first-all-else-second bashes and dances. The 16th Senate was headed by Bill Round. Besides fine tuning the Calendar and Programming Board, they too left a legacy of their own. They elected to have short terms and replace themselves with a new form of student government: The SGA, or Student Government Association. This will become a more wide spread government, encompassing all the other important organizations within. While not all students think that this spells the end for WSGA and MGB; it undoubtably should, for it is the most logical and simplest form of government for a campus the size of Curry. Both Senates were lead by gutsy, foot-first, intelligent leaders who believe that the Senate has got to stand on its own feet and be heard (although the Administration hardly listens, and the Senate constituents don ' t care!). Ellie Carabello was also the first woman President! Both Senates also strived to creatively control the Student Activity Fee in order to prevent waste, and best spread the money between many groups on campus, and also to encourage student activity by use of the SIP (Student Incentive Program) match- ing money. Shown at a typical financial budget meeting, Fall Treasurer Mark Carter discusses budget allotments. Centennial Events Committee The group that is planning the major events for the 100 year celebration of Curry College met throughout the 1977-78 year to begin preparations. Food Committee Phil, Bunny, Cindy Smith, Dave Transom. 88 The Food Committee led by Phil Zur and Bunny Aronson put in many thankless hours working closely with cafeteria manager John Johnson to provide the students with well-balanced meals. As everyone knows it is im- possible to please every- one and the cafeteria was not to be an exception. The ever famous Ham Hocks were just a tasting of the delicacies we were to enjoy. The constant complaints of this ! !s and please cook this , don ' t cook that , ' ' this has too much were none- the-less taken account of by the committee. Keep up the good work! Commuters Council The Commuters Council is the governing board for non-resi- dent students. Its members are elected to serve as liaison with the College community. The commuting students are gain- ing more and more recognition at Curry as they continue to assume leadership roles and become active members in many organizations. The Com- muters Council also sponsors events of interest for both the resident and non-resident stu- dents at Curry. Sophomore tackle Dave Berthiaume, sophomore linebacker Rick Padula, and senior linebacker Don Grosvenor all had tremendous years while leading the Colonel defense, one of the best in division III football. Margaret Cameron Growing up in a time when marriage is dwindling and the family is split up and bitter, it is comforting to be among the exception. When I look at the example that was set in my home by my parents, I feel I will never have any grave problems when I eventually have a family of my own some day. We were always given a cheerful smile, a firm hand or a loving embrace whenever the circumstance called for them. Never were there words spoken and later regretted or small disagreements left to grow. My parents set an example for their four children to be one of pure love, unselfishness and understanding. There was never a time when we couldn ' t go to them with a problem and receive advice or assistance. Through a long trying time we have all stuck by one another sharing optimism and disappointments. Now that my mother watches over us daily, I know the love between the rest of us will continue to grow. I know of no other family which has been blessed with the parents that my brothers and sister and I were. It is now, after I realize that I would be nowhere without them, that I want to say thank you to my father, and to my mother who has returned to a peaceful, everlasting life that she so deserves. And the youth said, Speak to us of Friendship And he answered saying: Your friend is your needs answered. He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving And he is your board and your fireside. For you come to him with your hunger and you seek him for peace. When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the nay in your own mind nor do you withhold the ay. And when he is silent your heart ceases not not to listen to his heart; For without words, in friendship, all thoughts all desires, all expectations are born and shared with joy that is unacclaimed. When you past from your friend you grieve not; For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain. And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit. For love that seeks aught but disclosure of its own mystery is not love but a net cast forth; and only the unprofitable is caught. And let your best be for your friend. If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also. For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to live, For it is his to fill your need, but not your emptiness. And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter and sharing of pleasure. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed. The Prophet Kahlil Gibran Helenty E. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to brave the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligen ce. Yet it is the one essential, vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. And I believe that in this generation those with courage to enter the moral conflict will find themselves with companions in every corner of the globe. For the fortunate among us, there is the temptation to follow the easy and familiar paths of personal ambition and financial success so grandly spread before those who enjoy the privilege of education. But that is not the road history has marked out for us. Like it or not, we live in times of danger and uncertainty. But they are also more open to the creative energy of men than any other time in history. The future does not belong to those who are content with today, apathetic toward common problems and their fellow man alike, timid and fearful in the face of new ideas and bold projects. Rather it will belong to those who can blend vision, reason and courage in a personal commitment to the ideals and great enterprises of American Society. Robert F. Dr. Jean Mayer Summary of Commencement Address Difficult Decisions in a Complex Society by Dr. Jean Mayer; Pres., Tufts Univ. Your lives, with God ' s grace, will reach well into the twenty-first century. You will live in a world that is changing more and more rapidly, becoming increasingly smaller, more interdependent, and more complex. As citizens, you will have to deal with the problems posed by an increasing world population and a finite energy supply, the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the threat of environmental destruction, the need for economic growth and for social justice, the effect on work and lifestyles of our aging, post-industrial society, to name but a few. These are not simple situations. They are complex and interrelated. Such problems cannot be solved piecemeal, in isolation, or with slogans, as we have thus far, for the most part, attempted to do. If there is one thought I would like you to remember after today, it is this: For every problem, there is one simple and obvious solution; and it is wrong. There are always costs and risks to be weighed, trade-offs and ripple effects to be considered, alternative uses for time, energy, and money. In national defense, energy policy, social and welfare programs, medical care, to give but four examples, we must learn to recognize and evaluate the many alternatives and to make reasoned choices. If our choices are based on an understanding of our intellectual, spiritual, and social inheritance, the complex interrelationships in today ' s world, and the true nature of the decisions we face, these and other problems can be solved. We are entering the most exciting time in the history of the world. We have the knowledge and the power to make it the best time, if we also have the will, the dedication, the patience, and the love-for our fellow men and women and for the fragile ecosystem around us. I believe that we have all four, and that you and your fellow graduates will prove me right. Honorary Degree: Kathleen Sullivan Alioto, Member of Boston School Com- mittee, Doctor of Edu- cation. I love it. I believe that it is the best yearbook Curry has had to date. Just I as 1977 ' s was the best one ever done till then. Someone will alwa;ys come around and do it better, you knowl the saying that records are made to be broken. Well, what do you think? Next year Eric Arena and Mary I Carneiro have the one in a hundred chance to really do it up with the College Centennial. Go get ' em Eric I and Mary, and have fun, and don ' t get discouraged because things don ' t ever work the way you planned it. I God, I wish they did. If they did I would have had this book done on time for all my deadlines, but as it is evident that you are reading it now 1 must have finished it, eh? What ' s to dislike in this book? Well, if you are one of those people who ' Tikle like a mouse there probably are not any pictures of you in here. If you go to lots of events or are chums v ' ith the photographers then you probably can take this book and find yourself many times. Just a word about the photographers. Several of them were from Miller Studio and had no bias what so ever, so if they missed you then you were not obnoxious enough to be seen. As for student picture takers they were a fairly diverse group and several of them did outstanding work. If you are not in here as much as you like I am sorry, next year maybe you should join the yearbook staff, because that is where the buck stops. As is the usual procedure there are many people I have to thank. Warren Ba irgan was very kind and helpful as yearbook advisor. From Josten ' s Yearbook Co. Bob Murphy is the kind of company representative that should get an award. Bob helped me in so many ways I can ' F4hank hini enough. Thankyou to Miller Studio, which did a fine job on assignments and printing of photos. Big thanks to Eric Arena for all his effort, Mike Mahoney who always seemed to be there to take pictures, Jym-Ann Callan, who did the god- awful job of typing the directory, and Pat Kirchdorfer who spearheaded the ad campaign and brought in well over 1000 dollars. Gretchen Baker and Jeanne Turner coordinated the Senior effort, which resulted in the Senior section, a section which I think all the Seniors can be proud to be associated with. Ellie Carabello and Jane Neveleff brought with them many new ideas while they toiled on the activities part of the book, and they vere probably the most diligent workers on the staff. To all the other staff members I thank you too, and I have tried to give credit where it is deserved. What else can I tell you? If you are careful you can paH out pages 136 and 137 and hang it on your wall as a poster. The weird photo that has the photo credits overprinted on it was a weirdo darkroom stunt by Eric. We tried to save space for more pictures by eliminating divider pages between sections, and we also have an unusual paper stock which the Senior Week is printed on. As for things that we have missed or messed up, I truly apologi c. I assure you that we made a 140% effort to make a yearbook that you will enjoy for years. Sincerely, Jeffery L. Tarleto . Editor, 1978 Curr r HHj ' Personal Note: Through my four years at Curry I have enjoyed man unique, exciting, and challenging experiences. There are many people outside my family that helped conti-ibute to the (mostly) excellent times: retc ' hen. Rick , Prof. Hcnningson, Karl, John Murray (wherever he is!), Eddie Black; and many others whom I think of often but I can ' t possibly mention them all. 1 am also in great debt personally and professionally to Bob Capalbo, Bob Wertheimer, Dr. Keighton, Joe Finn, the many fine folks working for security, and again all those I can ' t mention now.
