Head coach Bill Ross came to Cumberland College six years ago as a graduate of West Virginia Tech. and Mar- shall College. Before coming to Cumberland, Ross taught in the public schools of West Virginia. During his years at Cumberland, Ross has produced teams which demanded the full support of the student body. In the season of ’59-’60 the Indians under Ross’ leader- ship won three trophies plus many victories over their oppo- nents. We now take time out to give our thanks to Coach for the contributions he has made to Cumberland College. FROM THE BENCH BILL ROSS It is difficult in a few words to express my feelings con- cerning the 1959-1960 Cumberland Indians. When the school year started in the fall of 1959, I received phone calls from a number of boys who had signed to play at Cumberland. These boys expressed their regrets and said that since they had better offers elsewhere they were forced to accept them. This left us with what seemed to be an unsurmountable task in a rough conference. However, at that time I did not realize that the boys who did come had the fighting heart it takes to battle back. The hold-overs (Maupin, Collier, and Carlyle) came to play, the Frosh did not know what it meant to quit. Other teams held the edge in experience, but no one could outfight this group of boys. Due to the lack of adequate subs in certain positions our team was some- times a bit weary, but all-in-all I feel they did an outstanding job. The future of these boys will be bright, because they have followed the motto of: “Aim at the stars,” and even if you don’t reach them, you will still land very high. 140
