VARSITY FCJOTBALL Culver began the football season without hope but with a prayer. The first games were defeats. The team was small in size and power, and they knew it. lt was lacking in many things, many things except courage. And it was this courage, if nothing else, that pushed the team on, on over the mental block of early defeat, on to victory. One by one their opponents fell: El Segundo, Morn- ingside, Torrance, and who will forget the Beverly game. Now it was the crown, the league champion- ship, almost in their grasp. Then came Hawthorne, the shouting, the crying, the feet aching from stamping on the wooden seats, the hands stinging from clap- ping, and the throats raw. But it was their turn. We fell and we fell hard, but we had lost none of our dazzle for we had fought all the way. There he goes! Little 145 pound half back Ron Bridwell is on his way to his 80 yard touchdown run against Beverly Hills. I, VARSITY BASKETBALL Remembering Culver's team of last year, the Varsity Basketballers rolled into North High with all guns blazing on January ll, and scored over them, 69-40. Then came El Segundo and another victory followed by Morningside and a defeat, The Hawthorne team loomed up next, and follow- ing a Culver defeat, fell back to nurse its wounds. Beverly Hills followed suit, and fell before the Centaur guns. Hawthorne learned better and took the Centaurs in the next game, But the season's end, the final Beverly game, was the saddest of all, With two of our most valuable players missing, the team fought and took the lead in the first half, Then, as our boys logged onto the stadium floor once more, the big upset came. Beverly won, scor- ing all but two points on free throws. He started the next day with a grueling training schedule designed to bring the boys into top shape in the shortest possible time. Culver didn't win many duel meets but the individual improvements were tre- mendous, High iumper Dave McCullough upped his ceiling to 6'4Vg . Sophomore Jan Koshay and George Lund established fine B marks in both hurdles and sprints. Sophomore high jumper Joe Faust got over 6'2V1 . Barry Riley broke Doug Gib- son's school record in the pole vault with a l2'9 effort. Bill Hayes and Alan Rob- inson, Sophomores, won the league in the Bee l32O and 660 and Greg Elliott ran the C 660 in record time. ' ' ' ' D' VARSITY BASEBALL Coach Warren Flanagan and his varsity baseball team turned what looked like a so-so season into a winning campaign by beating Haw- thorne and Arch Rival Beverly Hills in the last two games ofthe season, this gave the Cents an 8-7 win-lost league record. The Beverly game was the out- standing game played on the Culver diamond this season. Left Fielder Ty Levin led the Culver batters by smashing a homerun and a double. Shortstop Randy Sandefur put the game on ice with a bases loaded triple to give Culver a 5 to 4 win. Lefthander Ben Burnett pitched the last two victories for the Centaurs, allowing only two hits against Haw- thorne, and 3 hits against Beverly Hills. Burnett won his own game against Hawthorne by hitting a grand slam home run. Joe Medaglia, Culver's stellar catcher, shows batting form which netted him the Bill Murphy and most valuable awards.
