Coach Del Goodyear's varsity cagers earned a tie for the Pioneer League Crown and gained en- trance into the C.l.F. playoffs. The Cents went up against Glendale Hoover in first round of these play-offs, drawing a bye from the eliminations. This contest, possibly the most heart-breaking in Culcihi records, was decided in a thrilling overtime period that had everyone on their feet, nearly hysterical. Glendale was the victor by a count of 58-56. After dropping the league opener to Beverly Hills, the Cents skipped through all the rest of their P.L. encounters undefeated. Revenge was sweet, as the home five edged Bev- erly 62-57 to stop the Normans 20-game win skein before an excited packed-house on the local floor. The defeat was only the Oilwellers second in 52 starts, covering the past two campaigns. For topping this crucial contest in such an exciting manner, Culver was honored with the selection as team-of-the-week, by the los Angeles Examiner-Bob Yeakel Athletic Foundation. The huge trophy was presented to the proud team over television on Channel 9. The cage aggregation as a whole played its finest game of the season against Beverly, but it took Mike McFerson's superb all-around performance to pave the victory path. Mike tallied 27 points and had an outstanding field goal percentage of 85 per cent. Another highlight of the past campaign was when McFerson set a new Pioneer league scoring record, bucketing 36 digits against North High, as Culver won 69-43. This was not iust an individual output. lt took the cooperation and team work of five men to hit this astounding total. The Centaurs completed the P.L. tour with a 9-1 slate, losing only to Beverly in that league opener.,This team is one that will always be remembered at Centaurville and go down in Culver history as the one to beat.
