S V K ,z. , -Kf' K iw . - ',?,,,.i 'MAA hifi g 'Z K aww From the call of the play in the huddle to the snap of the ball, there was a working unit, a finely tuned machine with only one objective: to score. Eleven men walked on the field as a team and eleven men walked off the field as a team. From the linemen to the backs and from the receivers to the quarterback, everyone had a job and everyone did it. There was nothing like the tension, excitement or intensity felt from Jeremy Clark's call of, Down, set, hutt,', to the referee's ear-piercing whistle. With the line consisting of Jody Stitt, and Will Little at tackles, J. J. Jacobs and Jamie Peterson at guards, along with Logan Doss at center, there was never a dull moment. Receivers such as Kevin Smith, Frankie Sapp and Sam David Knight left the game open for even more awe- inspiring moments. Also included in this well- oiled machine are our famed running backs. The concrete wall had not yet been constructed that could stop our very own Vince Cornett, who this year ran for over 1000 yards rushing. Never forget John Gardener, however, a man who earned 960 yards rushing himself. Yet stopping those backs was a totally different story from stopping a 6'2 , 210 pound running back like Delan Trimble or the determined John Mark Vandiver. We must also take note of another great running back, Shane Marti. And what would a touchdown have been without an extra point, easily supplied time after time by our very own Warren Trimble. All of these men put a lot of effort into bringing our season to a close with a great 7-3 record, including the coaches who united them with strong leadership and split decision calls. Congratulations guys on a great year! 'f 'a eggs 4,-H 'W- ,ywamap 'jus , . . One of the major contributors to the success of the 1988 Bearcat Football season was the outstanding play of the defense. The split-four defensive unit had many accomplishments throughout the course of the season. The Bearcats shut-out two opponents, Hanceville and Brewer, while having the opportunity to shut-out several other opponents. The Bearcat defense allowed only 100 points, whereas 49 were scored as the game was already well at hand, and the younger players were in the game. The defense was headed by the strong play of Shane Marti and Delan Trimble at defensive ends, at the same time that Will Little, John Grobe, and Mark Jones dominated the inside game at defensive tackles. The linebacking duties were manned by Jason Wright and Wescoat Free at the two outside spots, while Leslie Lilienthal and Richard Collins controlled situations from the two inside linebacker positions. The secondary also played a major part in the success of the Bearcat defense. The secondary was led by the consistent play of Tim Johnson at safety. Horace Brown, Kevin Smith, Jeremy Clark, and Vince Cornett handled the play at cornerback. M AS Z 2 ,Z iz Z 2 QU ff ifdf , . CHS Spirit Along with many other things, the 1988-89 Cullman Varsity Cheerleaders have brought many honors to Cullman High School. Some of these honors include superior trophies at summer camp at the University of Alabama, National Cheerleader Association regional winner, and 3rd runner-up at the Universal Cheerleader Association regional competition. This was the second straight year for the squad to attend a National Cheerleader Competition. Also, the squad competed in the UCA Nationals held in Orlando, Florida. Amy Sears and Kara Linton were selected as All-Stars at camp and traveled to London, England, over the Christmas holidays. A large number of guys ran during the season, and they competed well as a team with no individual standouts. The girls team, however, was just the opposite since they had only three girls that competed all season long, not even enough for a team. Individually they had a successful season. This culminated with Laurie Kennemer as the highest finisher at state 17th placel, Brandy Murphy finished her fourth solid year as a cross-country runner, and Sharon Freeman provided the group with a great deal of encouragement while also placing very well in meets. Coach Jim Miller thought both teams had good seasons, and, by running with them in practice, provided strong motivation and great leadership throughout the season. Sharon Freeman, Laurie Kennemer, Brandy Murphy S, i K .gg up , Q 3 fi' Tw ls I M. OLLEYB LL The volleyball team under the guidance of Coach Ray Heitmueller, rose to new heights this year. After a few early losses in the season, the Lady Cats proved to be competitive at the Tennessee Valley Conference Tour- nament. From there the Lady Cats achieved a twelve- game winning streak. Along the road, they defeated such teams as Boaz, Guntersville, Austin, and arch-county rivals Good Hope, Hanceville, and Holly Pond. The climax of the season occurred in Guntersville in the Area Championship. The Lady Cats dominated the Hartselle Tigers in what was to be remembered as one of the most emotional matches ever. Laura Noles, Kristi Ward, Suzy Page, and Jodi Day made the All-Area team while Wendy Calvert received the Most Valuable Player award. Another big part of Cullman's volleyball program was the Junior Varsity and Freshman teams. These girls provided the spectators with a fresh look. These players showed determination and a willingness to learn throughout the 1988 volleyball season. 44 This '88-'89 volleyball team was a thrill and a surprise. I also think they had alot of fun playing. 9' - Coach Heitmueller Q Top: Amy Jo Kenworthy, Donna Green, Kristi Ward, Jennifer Peinhardt, Jennifer Hughes, Middle: Wendy Calvert, Laura Noles, Jodi Day, Bottom: Shelley Chambers, Suzy Page. The 1988-89 varsity basketball team started off the season on a positive note by being victorious against Fairview in their opening game. However, the Bearcats were plagued with injuries early in the season. Juniors John Clark Keller and Delan Trimble sustained injuries that sidelined them for much of the year. With these injuries and other compli- cations, the season was not as successful as some had hoped. Leading the Bearcats this year was senior Jeff Wix, who averaged over 20 points per game. Also, seniors Leslie Lil- ienthal, Kevin Smith, and Richard Collins were instrumental in providing leadership. Marc Ponder and Brian Bowen moved up to start their first year of varsity basketball as sophomores. Last but not least were juniors Hank Apel, Sam David Knight, and Stephen Skinner. A valuable asset to the team was junior Heath White, who added needed height to this level of competition. The varsity and junior varsity boys were coached by Johnny Tekulve. 1989 marked his fourth year as coach at Cullman High School. All in all with its ups and downs, this year's team has found its way into the hearts of Cullman High School's students. INA II II . - ' 1988-89 Girls' Basketball The Cullman Lady Cats had another successful season this year. After losing their first game to Walker, the girls came back with wins at the Athens Christmas Tournament. The Lady Cats placed 3rd out of I6 teams. The key to their game was lots of hustle and the fast breaks. Seniors Kristi Ward, Laura Noles, Jennifer Hughes, Suzy Page, and Wendy Calvert provided strong leadership for the team. They were joined by juniors Amanda Shavers and Kristina Hutchinson, as well as sophomores Georgia Collins, Bridget Aris, and Laurie Kennemer. Also one should mention the three freshmen, Lori Gullion, Vicki Mayo, and Karen Heaton. Coach Ray Heitmueller entered his 13th season as the Lady Cat head coach and he said of this year's team, Cinderellas. They have remedied this, however, as each of its members has used this season as a learning period. Juniors on the team included Heath Porter, Brian Hagood, Allan Samp, Chris Mayo, and Shane Guest. The sophomores were Chad Akridge, David Hutchens, Dave Wright, Joseph Riddle, Mike McDowell, J and Shawn Daffron. All of these players have worked very i hard this season and have won the last five games, ending t their season on a good note. lt is good to know that these young men will be at the heart of next year's team, and they deserve all the confidence we can place in them. Seniors Tasha Eddleman, Kara Linton, Amy Sears, and Jenny Westberry have provided strong leadership. Jun- iors Shannon Carter and Susan Nielsen have given good support. The sophomores were Tami Hitt, Dusty Schuman, and Sharon Freeman. The only freshman on the squad was McKenna Trimble who has shown tremendous improvement throughout the season. After graduating only one starter, the team looked exceptionally strong for this year, but one star1erfScott McBrayerJ never fully recovered from a broken leg suffered in the final game of 1988, and another starter moved. Even with the loss of these two seniors, however, the team was still led by a host of others, including Cullman's first four year starters Paul Messersmith and Clint Peinhardt. Other seniors included Adrian Wesley, Tim Johnson, Greg Sweatmon, Michael Wenzel, Juan Ochoa, and Mar- cus Loegler. Juniors Warren Trimble, Jason Kelly, Pat Morrison, Allan Samp, and Brian McCombs were expected to contribute to the team as well. With the experiences of past years behind them and high school soccer firmly established this year's team was looking to have a great season. . The Cullman High School golf team swung into the action of the 1989 season with an optimistic outlook. Under the guidance of Coach Don Green, the golfers faced some of the toughest competition in the state. Dr. Green took over the golf team in the fall of 1983. Since that time he has led the CHS golfers to many successful seasons. The 1989 team proved to be no different with all of the golfers returning from the 1988 team. While facing several tough opponents, the golf team still competed well against many schools larger than ours. Matches were held against teams such as Decatur, Austin, Bradshaw, Arab, Coffee, Grissom, Deshler, Scottsboro, Albertville, Butler, Jasper, Hartselle, and Russlleville. Cullman golfers were able to play on some of the finest courses in this area. Several matches were held in Cullman at the Municipal Golf Course, as well as at Terri Pines. The team also traveled to play at other places such as the Decatur country Club, Burning Tree Country Club, Point Mallard, Albertville Country Club, Goose Pond, and Musgrove.
