The awesome attacking efensive efforts by linemen Russell Swann, Keith Drake, ason Wright, and Leslie Lilienthal held teams far from their Lcoring goals. The Bearcat secondary, led by jeremy Clark md Danny Ashley, gave up even less to Bearcat opponents. Offense was by no means outshadowed by the outstanding Bearcat defense. Quarterback Danny Ashley moved the ball on the ground as well as in the air, and when Ashley wasn't throwing, he shifted to the receiving position for a few re- ceptions along side Kevin Smith. The ground attack of the offense was headed by Dayne Nelson and Keith Drake, who burst through the line for several hard-fought yards. The inexperience of the 'Cats was easily made up for by the gritty determination and savvy with which they played. It wasn't experience that carried the Bearcats to victory in their most bone chilling thrillers. Rather, it was the foot of sophomore Warren Trimble. By nipping a 35-yard kick with 6 seconds left, Trimble forced the Arabian Knights to tumble, and one week later he kicked a field goal in overtime to win an area game over Hamilton. 4363 532, .T l' , Yikixilx ' lf. The teams began their season with a new coach, lim Miller. Aside from this change is the Bearcat roster, the first five classifications were combined for State meet competition to provide more in- tensity. The girls finished in the runner-up po- sition for classes 1A through 5A in 1987. The girls were disappointed because they would have placed first if the new combining method had not been en- acted. Two members of the girls' team were in the top fifteen and the total team score was 100. The Bearcat girls placed as follows: Laurie Kennemer 4th, lisa Kennemer 11th, Brandy Murphy 16th, Sharon Freeman 28th, and Robyn Kilpatrick 41st. During the regular sea- son the girls' team placed in every meet and also placed individuals in top fin- ishes. The boys were not as fortunate as the girls in their endeavors, but they gave a terrific effort. They struggled through the new season with new faces on the team, but enjoyed themselves nonetheless. The top finisher for the boys at the State meet was senior Tommy Hacker who finished 17th. i 4, -' if E ig F' V 3 .ry f 1 cf' htil 3 L ,L suusaw'- Z'f row: loe Ragsdale, Trevor Hale, Russell Sloan, Chad Tucker, Back row: Wright, Tommy Hacker, Andy Modene, Billy Kane and Coach Miller. ,aw Two of the reasons for success of the Lady Bearcats cross country belong to the Kennemer family. Led by five senior starters and one junior, the 'Cats stomped the Curry Yel- lowjackets to claim the title. The rest of the season was not as successful for the volleyball team which saw several defeats against county teams. In TVC competition the Lady 'Cats advanced three rounds before being ousted by Brewer. During the season the 'Cats were propelled by the ac- curate setting of Suzy Page and Kelly Miller. ARSITY Bovs It was a disappointing season for the varsity boys who tallied only two wins during the regular sea- son. They gained these wins against area teams Curry and Russelville. The 'Cats lacked experience on a team that did not see one varsity starter from the year before. The seniors who led the team were Darrell Pon- der, point guard, Joe Parrish, center, David Binkow- ski, centerp Russell Swann, forward, Mitch Leopard, guardg and Steve Smith, forward. It was the three-point shot that added variety to the boys game this year. This addition to the game enabled quick catch- ups from long range. GOLF TE SOCCER In its third year, the soccer team will be coached by jim Miller. The coaches have had a time trying to find competition for the Bearcats because soccer is not a widely-offered sport. With the popularity it has gained, though, it is growing by leaps and bounds. More and more schools are bringing the sport into their programs. The Bearcats will be competing in the Birmingham league this year and look to a building year for the team and sport. 193 l TENN S TE MS Coached by Don Wilbanks, the boys and girls tennis teams look to a good season. The teams saw some foreign fac- es as 3 l.E.F. students joined the ranks. The teams will rank Erica Williamses first for the girls and Darrell Ponder for the boys. luanita Taylor returns this year for the girls after winning the number two title in sectionals. The boys finished sec- ond overall in sectionals to advance to the state tournament in Gadsden.
