Musicians Work Hard for Special Honors The best vocalists and instrumentalists from certain individual schools compete in the All-State Music Concert. CHS participants this year were back row: Rocky Fowler, Mary Jo Martin, Pat Grinnell, and Andy Hoskinson. Front row: Phil Cunningham, Kathy Brother- ton, Mark Reed, and jere Francis. This year Kathy Brotherton received the Arion Award. This Award is given to the most outstanding musician in the CHS band. Those receiving Division I ratings in the annual state music con- test were: three flute soloists, a clarinet soloist, two French horn soloists, one alto sax soloist, two flute trios, a clarinet trio, a woodwind trio, a sax quartet, a trombone quartet, a brass sextet, and four vocal soloists. Kathy Brotherton received a I+ rating on her flute solo.

Musicianship and Spirit Band Queen Dawn Buxton was elected by the members of the band to repre- sent the Panther Marching Band at the Clarinda Band Jamboree. Her escort was Doug Rall. Drum major Bob Wich- hart led the Panther March- ing Band to a Division I rating at State Marching Band Contests his sopho- more, junior and senior years. Eight attractive twirlers who stepped in time to the marching band are fini row, Kathy Kirkman Pat Baker, and Lynn Bu- chanang second row, Vickie Blazek, Reva Vicker, Pam Paxson, Wendy Wykoff, and Pam Schrodt. y 3

Phil overly-protective mother, and Connie Hawks as his secretary and girlfriend had leading roles in "Bye Bye Cunningham as Albert, Mia Dehopere as his Birdie". Charlie Brown, Patty Grinnell, Mary jo Martin, and Arlin Beemer try to adjust to the fact that they're going to be on Ed Sullivan. john Miller played the singing idol Conrad Birdie who is drafted into the CHS 'd Bl s Farewell Army. to Many hours of hard work by cast and pro- duction crews attrib- uted to the unexpected success of "Bye Bye Birdie". Capacity crowds were delighted by the excellent Feb. 23 and 25 perform- ances. Vocal music in- structor james Kimmel directed the musical. Conrad Birdie Conrad's most avid fans boo and hiss at their boyfriends who are jealous of Conrad's populari ty. The performers seem tense in the moments before the Ed Sulli- van Show in which Conrad is to bestow his last Kim MacAfee, played by Mary Jo Martin. kiss upon The telephone scene was one of the most appealing parts of the musical.
