Believers, I wouldlave backed outif I could.. but Mr. Christoff reminded me that the Class of 1960 isn't a bunch of quitters and that for the president to fail to meet his responsibilities vould throw a shadow on ihe entire class. Naturally, I didn't want that to happen, so here I am. I've studied up on speeches in general and commencement in particular, and I'll do the very best I can. Oh, dear! I should have started out by welcoming all of you to this program! Just forget that beginning, will you, and let me start over? . Members of the faculty and school board, parents, fellow class members, friends, ladies and gentlemen, we do appreciate your coming here today toshare in the festivities of the commencement season. To some, this may seem just part of a series of talks supposedly connected with commencement, but to us, it is all-important. We have listened to commencement programs all our lives, sometimes criticizing them for what they said as well as what they didn't say, but now we realize that very speech made, every program presented, meant a great deal to those responsible for them, and that it was very thoughtless of us, to say the least, to fail to appreciate their efforts. Because we have reached this conclusion, may we ask that you give us your support, even though many of you will feel that you could have done far better than we are doing? As I said, when I was first elected president I was so proud of my accomplishment that I did not think much about the responsibilities that are a part of the position. I didn't know much about parliamentary rules or realize that they were important, but Mr. Christoff helped me see that they were and even loaned me a book to help me understand. At first some of the class thought I was going Nhigh hatn, but once they got the idea they were ready to go ahead. That is one of the fine things about the Class of 1960. They have stood behind every move for the improvement of our school as well as of our own class. You know, that is a good trait for individuals as well as classes. If we all boosted instead of knocking, thevhole world would be better. Oh, I know we are just a small group in a small community, and it may seem that our affairs have very little effect on other people or places,V but did you ever stand on the shore of a lake or river and throw a small pebble into the water? As long as you stand there watching you can see tiny waves forming as a result of that one pebble, and I have read that, if we had a way of following them, we would see that those little waves finally touch the opposite shore of the body of water. Doesn't it makee nse to say that the actions .rr -1 , kflffu , .X .. .. of all the people in the world reach out and effect all the other people? If that is true, then the doings of even a small class in a small school have a greater influence than we would imagine possible. Sometimes I wonder who started this idea of commence- ment speeches. I have heard of schools who simply hire a speaker for class day, and let it go at that. There were times when I was working on this speech that I wished our faculty and school board did that way, but I guess they really do know what is best. While none of us may be president of the United States or Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, it is entirely possible that we might be called upon to make a speech some time, and if we hadn't had any practice at all, we would be in a bad way. You folks who are listening may wonder what you get out of it, and perhaps you shouldn't be blamed for that, but I really believe if you look at the program as a whole, you will see that even the listeners may be benefitted. Just stop to think of our whole school system. Children from all sorts of homes come to our school where, no matter how their homes are conducted and what each of them thinks, they are trained tozbllow a system which applies to the entire group, not just to individuals. Even though some rebel, the system goes on, andat last classes are gaduated, each member having completed a prescribed course of study leading to a diploma which is recognizedly higher institutions of learning. Even programs like this are part of the system, and contribute in many ways to the advancement to the group and individuals. We honestly believe that if you will think seriously of what we have said and of what others will say you will find something helpful. while commencement is a time of joy, still there is something sober, almost sad, about it. Never again will we be high school pupils. while we may meet the members of the faculty, the school board, and even our classmates from time to time, it will not be the same, and yet we will be the same people we were here in school. If, through these years, we have shirked, if we have had a tendency to get by with as little effort as possible, we will continue doing that way. It will effectcnr dealings with others, no matter what line of work we pursue. If we have failed to do our best, it is forever too late to change as far as our high school record is concerned, but it is still possible to improve. You may not remember much of what I have said, but I do hope you will remember that. Perhaps there have been times when you did not do your best, but from now on you can make up your minds toimprove, and can work with that thought ever before you. If, however, we have obeyed the rules, co-operated with- 1 ' . Q .ln those who have had the responsibility of guiding us through the years, we will realize more and more that school was very truly a training period, preparing us for life outside the school rooma Yes, it is vastly different looking back on the school year than looking ahead i'om the time we held dass elections. I want to thank the girls of the class for their loyal support, the faculty for their helpfulness, and all who have done anything al all to help our class and, through us, the school as a whole. As class president, I have benefitted greatly from your efforts. Every member of the class as well as all the others in our school, have helped make my period of office pleasant. I can not find words to express my appreciation, but I sincerely hope you understand. Just as we could not know at the beginning of the year what would happen during this year, so we, looking ahead can not tell what will come to us, However, we can rest assured that the determination with which we have followed the oourses prescribed for us by school rulings will stand us in good stead as we ge into the world outside, and that, as we have come to this point with pride in our accomplish- ments, we shall be able to meet all the problems which are sure to confront us in the future. Once more, let me thank you, my classmates, as well as all others in our sohool, the faculty, the school board and friends who have contributed inlany ways to our advancement. You have looked forward to this occasion with us. We want you to share the joy we feel today. We have come a long way since we entered high school in the fall of September, 1956. There were six green fresh- men anxiously waiting te start the long rough climb to the top. The Hgreeniesu consisted of Diane Arnett, Mary Jo Somrak, Joy Probst, Bob Saya, Gary Farr, and Duane Ruland. We elected class officers and our leaders for the year were: Mary Je Somrak, president, Diane Arnett, vice-president, Joy Probst, secretaryg Bob Saya, treasurer, Gary Farr, reporter, and Duane Ruland, class spokesman. Mr. Ruland was our sponsor for the year. with our class officers chosen and the dreadful week of initatien over, we looked toward our high school days with high hopes and never-ending courage. We studied hard and, with what energy we had left, cen- tributed to school acticities. Gary, Duane, and Bob were on the football and basketball team, while Mary Jo, Diane, and Joy joined the pep club to cheer them on to victory. we were all in the high school band, also. Before we knew it, our first year at C.B.H.S. was ended. when we entered school as sophomores, we were sorry to see that our class consisted of five members. we were sorry to lose Duane Ruland who had moved to Olathe, Colorado. Joy Probst was president of the sophomore class, Diane Arnett, vice-president, Mary Jo Somrak, secretary, Bob Saya, treasurerg and Gary Farr, reporter. Mr. Christoff was our class sponsor. The most eventful activity of our sophomore year was initating the freshmen. Other activities were the successful booth at the school carnival, and we were still contributing our musical talents to the band. Joy Probst was crowned Queen ef the Junior Carnival, Mary Je Somrak was elected as one of the cheerleaders, and Bob Saya and Gary Farr were on the basketball team. Later in the year, we were unfortunate to lose Gary Farr who moved to Kansas. Even though we were busy, we looked forward to our junior year. 5 Upon entering school in the fall, the junior class consisted of Diane Arnett, Mary Jo Semrak, Joy Probst, and Bob Saya. Our leaders for the year were: Diane Arnett, presidentg Mary Jo Somrak, vice-president and reporterg Joy Probst, secretaryg and Bob Saya, treasurer. Mrs. Aspinall guided us through this eventful year. The first happy moment of our junior year was the day we received our class rings. During the year we sold candy, pop, and magazines to raise money. Our next event was the carnival with Mary Jo Semrak as Queen. We then presented our class play, HNewhere Fastn, under the direction of Mrs. Somrak. It proved to be a wonderful hit with everyone. Ne sooner had . o I Q ,m L -'Y , . I ' w . f . We worked hard and industriously, and finally the big night arrived. with our theme, nwith a Song in My Heartn, we entertained the seniors at the banquet and prom on May 2, 1959. Thus ended our junior year. When we took our rightful places in C.B.H.S. as seniors of 1960, our class still consisted of four. We chose Bob Saya as president, Joy Probst, vice-president, Mary Jo Somrak, secretary, and Diane Arnott, treasurer. Mr. Christoff was our sponsor. Our classa ill took part in the many school activities. Bob Saya was elected Student Council president, and con- tributed the rest of his energy to the basketball team. Joy Probst was elected vice-president of the student council, and Diane Arnott the treasurer. Mary Jo Somrak and Joy Probst were elected cheerleaders once again. Bab Saya, Mary Jo Somrak, and Joy Probst were attendants for the Junior Carnival Royal Court. we all entered the badmiton tournament and enjoyed this to the fullest. We were still participating in the band and chorus. The highlights of our senior year were: the publishing of the school paper, the RANGER, and the publishing of the annual. Of course, there was our sneak day, the Junior Class Carnival, and the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. In this closing hour of our years at C.B.H.S. we are grateful to you, our friends and parents, for making our education possible for us. And, now, with our motto, Uwe are not afraid of tomorrow for we have seen yesterday, and we love todayn, we shall go out and find our rightful places in the world. , 1 WSF'-. if -WF' ,ME -- v r - I' I S u ,lv ' 1 l 1 I M ' f v I 15. . Our will is a wish for an era when all the world's energies could go for human happiness andxbvelopment and not toward preparation for war. We, theflass of 1960, dispose ofcnr possessions in this manner : To theentire school we leave the example we have set as worthy students. We alsoIbave our memories, our voices, and our other souvenirs. To the Juniors we leave our UDivine Rightsn as Seniors. We also leave them our ability to chew gum, eat candy, throw paper, snap rubber bands, and place tacks in chairs without thepunishment that comes:icm the teachers during this unruly action. Also, we leave to them our seats in study-hall. Occupy them, but don't try to fill them. To our good and unsuspecting friends, the Sophomores, we give them our patience and forbearance. We also give them the formula for getting in good with the teachers. And as Juniors-to-be, we leavegou the ability to have fun during the play and prom. To the young Eeshmen we leave the ability to seek revenge on the Freshmen-to-be for the pranks we have played on them. To the bashful and awkward Freshmen-to-be we leave the map of the school, so they won't get lost while exchanging classrooms. We also leave to them our highest hopes that each and everyone of them will one day take the place we are now leaving. To the Faculty we gve our sincere affection, our cbepest gratitude, and ihe whole unlimitedvealth of mr lasting nemory. We also give them the amazing and reliable information which they have learned from our exam papers to be used for the enlightenment of future classes. This being the total of our class possessions, we the Class of '60 now gve our personal possessions to the following people: I, Mary Jo Somrak, will my cheerleading position to Trudy Yaklich. HIt's a lot of hopping and jumping around, but it surely is fun.U To Dick Rozman, I will my ability to get along with the teachers and to stay out of the office.
