Off to an auspicious start, the Cresco fo tball ship of victory sailed along at a merry clip in the September weeks of the 1936 season. But with the destination. the Northeast lowa Conference Championship Pert. in sight. the Old Rose and Black vessel hit a snag in the form cf Oelwein, Frrim thence it was difficult sailing. The 1936 Spartans were composed of seven lettermen from the previous season around which the team was centered. They Were: Eas- ler. Connolly. Owens. Aegler, Culbert, Stevens. and Miller. Coaches Thomps n and Flanagan supervised the team. The feature game of the season was played on the home field with Oelwein. The Spartans lost after a hard battle by a score of 16-6. The Old Rose and Black team finished in the cellar of the Northeast Iowa Conference by losing all of their c nference games by a small margin. The 1936 Spartans were composed primarily of underclassmen who will be used to a great advantage next year. Cresco was handi- capped in the latter part of the Season by the loss of two veterans, Aegllr and Conn lly. both regular players. Coach Thompscn issued 14 letters this year. The following boys received the awards: Connelly. captain: Owens. Easler, Aegler, Thay- er. Weaklen. Lickteig, Miller. Queel, Mitchell. Riehle. Chehak, Meln- tyre. Stevens and Anderson. Miller, who played guard. in the early part of the season and quarterback in the latter received honorable mention on the Northeast Iowa Conference team.
